Pokémon GOLD and SILVER

Johto Journey

    1) Introduction

Within the Johto region of the Pokémon world, the player takes on the character of Ethan, who sets off to begin his Pokémon journey from New Bark Town. Before leaving the house, Ethan is provided his Pokégear from his mother, and is told that Professor Elm has been looking for him. Exiting the house, Ethan heads towards the Professor's Lab, but notices a strange boy looking into the building. The boy notices Ethan spying on him, and pushes him away so that he can be left alone.

Entering the lab, Professor Elm greets Ethan, and asks for the boy to run an errand for him. The errand being to meet with a person called Mr. Pokémon as he had sent the professor an e-mail recently that he discovered something big. Professor Elm next offers Ethan a starter Pokémon, Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile, to protect the boy on his journey towards Mr. Pokémon, which causes Ethan to pick one. In addition to providing Ethan his phone number, Professor Elm informs the boy that Mr. Pokémon can be found near the next town, Cherrygrove City.

    2) Errand for Professor Elm

Leaving New Bark Town, Ethan goes west along Route 29 until he reaches Cherrygrove City. Ethan comes across an old man in Cherrygrove City that teaches Ethan the basics of what certain landmarks and buildings do. After the tour, the old man provides Ethan a Map Card that is then uploaded into Ethan's Pokégear.

Ethan then heads north along Route 30, and sees that the main path going forward is currently blocked by an on-going Pokémon battle. Ethan continues along a different Route 30 path until he finally reaches the home of Mr. Pokémon. Entering the house, Mr. Pokémon provides Ethan with a Mystery Egg claiming that it was a recent discovery made at a Pokémon Day Care, and asks for Ethan to return it to Professor Elm. In addition, Professor Oak of the Kanto region is seen to have stopped by to visit Mr. Pokémon, and greets Ethan by stating that he was waiting on standby to see the boy that Professor Elm sent on an errand. Impressed by Ethan's bond with his Johto starter Pokémon, Professor Oak decides that Ethan would be a perfect candidate to be handed over the latest version of the Pokédex. Handing Ethan a Pokédex, Oak departs Mr. Pokémon's home since he needs to attend a radio-show at Goldenrod City.

After Ethan leaves Mr. Pokémon's house, he gets a frantic call from Professor Elm informing the boy that something bad happened at his lab, and asks for Ethan to return to New Bark Town as soon as possible. Ethan begins his trip back to New Bark Town going down Route 30 to return to Cherrygrove City, Before going west along Route 29 however, he's greeted by the strange boy that was spying on Professor Elm's lab. The boy, knowing that Ethan received a Johto starter, is left unimpressed. He finds Ethan to be a wimp, and challenges him to a Pokémon battle claiming that he also received a powerful Pokémon. As the battle starts, Ethan realizes that the boy has a Johto starter as well (and is always the Pokémon that Ethan's choice has a disadvantage against). After the battle, the boy leaves off introducing himself as Silver, and that he's going to be the world's greatest Pokémon trainer.

Ethan returns to going back to New Bark Town through Route 29, and arrives at Professor Elm's lab. Upon entering the lab, Ethan sees that Professor Elm is currently reporting a Pokémon robbery to a policeman. The policeman explains to Ethan that the perpetrator was a young male with red hair, which Ethan replies that he battled a trainer like that just recently, and that his name is Silver. The policeman thanks Ethan for the information as he leaves the lab to return to his investigation.

Despite the robbery, Professor Elm asks Ethan what Mr. Pokémon's discovery was, which causes Ethan to hand over the Mystery Egg. Professor Elm is left amazed by the discovery, and becomes even more amazed after Ethan tells him that he met Professor Oak as Mr Pokémon's house, and was handed a Pokédex from him. As a result, Professor Elm believes that Professor Oak sees the potential in Ethan to become the Pokémon Champion. Professor Elm asks for Ethan to take on the Pokémon Gym challenge, and that the first gym Ethan will come across is in Violet City. He leaves off asking Ethan to tell his mother that he will be leaving on a long Pokémon journey.

Returning home, Ethan informs his mother that he's leaving to go on a Pokémon journey. In return, Ethan's mother offers to save some of the money Ethan earns throughout his journey. If Ethan didn't tell his mom that he was leaving before going on a journey, she will call Ethan up about this near the end of Route 30.

    3) Zephyr Badge

Beginning his Pokémon journey, Ethan repeats his previous path going west along Route 29, to Cherrygrove City, and then north along Route 30. Along Route 30, Ethan passes through the location that was previously blocked off by a Pokémon battle, and manages to reach Route 31. Going east along Route 31, Ethan eventually reaches Violet City.

Needing some training before challenging the gym, Ethan takes on the Sprout Tower of Violet City to battle the trainers within it. The final trainer, Sage Li, provides those who complete the Sprout Tower with the Flash HM. Before Ethan takes on Sage Li, he witnesses the end of the Sage's battle with Silver. Despite Silver winning, Sage Li scolds the boy for being too harsh on his Pokémon. Silver is left unimpressed since Sage Li's Pokémon are weak, and leaves off telling Ethan that all he cares about are Pokémon that are strong. After Silver leaves, Red defeats Sage Li, and is awarded the Flash HM.

After completing the Sprout Tower, Ethan heads over to the Violet City Gym. Here, Ethan takes on the flying-type Gym Leader, Falkner, in order to obtain the Zephyr Badge.

Route 46

On Route 29, Ethan comes across the south entrance of Route 46. Due to cliffs on Route 46, Ethan can't go any further north, but can come across some Pokémon seen nowhere else.

Dark Cave

On Route 31, Ethan can enter the first portion of the Dark Cave to catch some Pokémon seen nowhere else, and can light up the cave after using the Flash HM. However, the path forward is blocked due to a breakable rock that requires the Rock Smash HM.

    4) Hive Badge

After defeating Falkner, Ethan gets a call from Professor Elm to inform the boy that they discovered something interesting about the Mystery Egg that Mr. Pokémon discovered. He asks for Ethan to meet with his lab assistant at the Violet City Pokémon Center regarding this. Ethan enters the Pokémon Center, and meets with Professor Elm's assistant. He asks for Ethan to take care of the egg, and hands it over to the boy. Prefessor Elm's assistant explains that they discovered how the egg will only hatch if it's around a trainer with active Pokémon. He leaves off asking for Ethan to call Professor Elm once the egg has hatched. During Ethan's journey, the egg would eventually hatch into a Togepi, and showing the discovery to Professor Elm will reward Ethan with an Everstone.

Having obtained the Pokémon egg, Ethan begins his trip to Azalea Town by departing south of Violet City along Route 32. Upon reaching the Pokémon Center outside Union Cave, a man asks if Ethan wants to purchase a SlowpokeTail for 1,000,000 dollars. Ethan of course doesn't have that kind of money, which disappoints the man believing that he thought kids these days were loaded with cash. Next, Ethan goes through the north entrance of Union Cave, and exits out the south entrance to end up on Route 33. Going west along Route 33, Ethan eventually ends up at Azalea Town.

Exploring Azalea Town, Ethan sees that the town's water well, as well as the Gym entrance, are blocked by Team Rocket members. He then goes into Kurt the Pokéball Smith's house where the man explains how despite having been disbanded three years ago, Team Rocket has started to appear once again, and has been making business within Azalea Town's Slowpoke Well by chopping off the tails of Slowpokes, and selling them off for large sums of money. Ready to save the Slowpokes from Team Rocket, Kurt races out of the house towards the Slowpoke Well.

Ethan follows after Kurt towards the Slowpoke Well, but upon dropping down into it, he sees that Kurt has injured his back falling down into the well after forcing the Team Rocket member guarding the entrance to retreat. Kurt asks for Ethan to deal with the remaining Team Rocket members, which Ethan does so by defeating all the evil gang members within the Slowpoke Well.

After Team Rocket retreats, Kurt checks on the Slowpokes, and offers to make some special Apricorn Pokéballs for Ethan as a reward for chasing off Team Rocket. Ethan next heads over to the Azalea Town Gym to take on the bug-type Gym Leader, Bugsy, in order to obtain the Hive Badge.

Route 36

From Violet City, Ethan can go west onto Route 36. The northern entrance into the Ruins of Alph is here, but the path to proceed any further along Route 36 is blocked by a strange tree (Sudowoodo).

Ruins of Alph

From either the north entrance on Route 36, or the east entrance on Route 32, Ethan can enter into the Ruins of Alph. Here, Ethan discovers that scientists have been studying the mysterious ruins to learn what they can about it. Within a chamber that can be walked to on foot, Ethan solves a Kabuto slide-puzzle, which causes him to fall into the ruins. The result of solving the puzzle ends up waking up letter-like Pokémon that has previously been asleep, the Unown.

    5) Plain Badge

After defeating Bugsy, Ethan goes west of Azalea Town to enter Ilex Forest, but is stopped by the arrival of Silver. Hearing the rumors that Team Rocket has returned, Silver refuses to believe that it was Ethan who scared them off, and decides to battle to see if Ethan's strength is legit. After suffering defeat to Ethan, Silver explains how he hates people who are weak, which includes those that are from Team Rocket. Before leaving, he orders Ethan to stay out of his way as a wimp is nothing more than a distraction. Afterwards, Ethan enters Ilex Forest.

Going through the forest, Ethan's path forward is blocked by a bush, but also comes across the cutting-master, and his son. The cutting-master asks for Ethan to bring back his son's runaway Farfetch'd that got lost somewhere in the woods. Once Ethan brings the Farfetch'd back, the cutting-master rewards Ethan with the Cut HM. Now able to cut the bush blocking the way, Ethan continues north through the Ilex Forest, and exits the north forest entrance onto Route 34. Heading north along Route 34, Ethan comes across Johto's Day Care, and then arrives at Goldenrod City.

Given the size, Ethan spends his time exploring around Goldenrod City. He comes across a hidden Bike Shop that moved in recently, but isn't having much business. As a result, the clerk offers Ethan a bike to provide his Bike Shop advertisement. If Ethan rides the bike for a certain amount of time, the clerk calls up Ethan thanking him for bringing him business thanks to the advertising, and lets Ethan keep the bike as a thank you gift. Other notable locations is the Goldenrod Department Store, the Goldenrod Game Corner, a Magnet Train station that doesn't appear to be active yet, as well as the Goldenrod Tunnel that has a mysterious locked door within it. Ethan also visits Bill's house where his sister provides Ethan with Bill's number, which allows the boy to check on his Pokémon storage.

The last notable landmark Ethan explores is the Goldenrod Radio Tower. On the 1st Floor, Ethan takes a quiz from an employee at the front desk. Passing the test provides Ethan with the Radio Card for his Pokégear. Going up to the 2nd Floor, the staircase to the 3rd Floor is blocked off by an employee, who informs Ethan that he's not allowed to go any further. However, the employee notes that it wasn't always like this as something has been off about the Director of the Radio Tower recently.

Afterwards, Ethan arrives at the Goldenrod City Gym to take on the normal-type Gym Leader, Whitney, in order to obtain the Plain Badge. After being defeated, Whitney breaks down into tears refusing to hand over the badge to Ethan. However, after calming down moments later, she agrees that Ethan is deserving of the Plain Badge. If Ethan requires training before taking on Whitney, he can go north of Goldenrod City to Route 35.

    6) Fog Badge

After defeating Whitney, Ethan stops by the Goldenrod City Flower Shop, and is provided a SquirtBottle from the shopkeeper. She explains to Ethan that since he's proven to be strong enough after defeating Whitney, he can use the SquirtBottle to remove the Sudowoodo that's blocking the path on Route 36. Afterwards, Ethan departs from Goldenrod City by heading north along Route 35. Ethan then makes his way to Route 36 by either going through the Johto National Park, or by going through a hidden path blocked by a bush that goes around said park.

Now on Route 36, Ethan uses the SquirtBottle on the Sudowoodo, which causes the Pokémon to attack Ethan. Upon defeating the Sudowoodo, Ethan has opened up the path to continue north towards Ecruteak City. In addition, a man on Route 36 rewards Ethan with the Rock Smash HM for clearing away the Sudowoodo. Passing by the roadblock where Sudowoodo once stood, Ethan goes north along Route 37 until finally reaching Ecruteak City.

Exploring Ecruteak City, Ethan enters the Pokémon Center where he encounters Bill finishing up with the Time Capsule for Pokémon trading. He then states that he now has to return to Goldenrod City in order to meet his family. Ethan next enters the Dance Theater where he defeats each of the five Kimono Girls. As a result of defeating all five, Ethan is rewarded with the Surf HM from the Theater Director. Ethan also visits the entrance towards the Bell Tower, but can't be accessed for the time being.

Ethan next goes into the Burned Tower where he encounters Silver again. Silver figures that Ethan must have arrived at the Burned Tower to catch the rumored legendary Pokémon, but claims that he will obtain said Pokémon before Ethan, and challenges Ethan to a battle. After being defeated, Silver decides to leave not finding it fun taking on a wimp, and states that Ethan isn't going to be strong enough to catch the legendary Pokémon anyway.

After the encounter with Silver, Ethan falls down a hole in the Burned Tower, and comes across three Legendary Beast Pokémon that run away to the outside world after being spotted by Ethan. These three Legendary Beasts are Raikou, Entei, and Suicune, who Ethan can fight as roaming encounters throughout Johto. Exiting the Burned Tower, Ethan makes his way over to the Ecruteak City Gym to take on the ghost-type Gym Leader, Morty, in order to obtain the Fog Badge.

Letter Delivery

Ethan can talk with a guard at the north entrance gate of Goldenrod City, who then asks for the boy to deliver a Spearow carrying his mail to his sleeping friend on Route 31. Delivering the mail, the sleeping person on Route 31 thanks Ethan by rewarding him with the special Nightmare TM.

Bug Catching Contest

On Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays, Ethan can take part in the Bug Catching Contest that takes place within the National Park between Routes 35 and 36. Winning the contest rewards Ethan with a Sun Stone.

Dark Cave to Route 46

With the Rock Smash HM now in his possession, Ethan can go deeper into the Dark Cave on Route 31, and exit out at another location to explore the rest of Route 46. However, Ethan can't continue north towards Route 45 due to cliffs.

Eevee

After Ethan runs into Bill at Ecruteak City, the researcher heads off to his home in Goldenrod City. At his home, Bill will provide Ethan with an Eevee to take care of.

    7) Storm Badge

After defeating Morty, Ethan departs west from Ecruteak City along Route 38. Ethan then continues onto Route 39 passing by the MooMoo Farm, and then turns south until eventually reaching Olivine City. Upon entering the city, Ethan spots Silver coming out of the Olivine City Gym. Silver informs Ethan that the Gym Leader appears to not be around due to taking care of a sick Pokémon at the lighthouse. He leaves off disappointed that the Gym Leader would choose to take care of a weak Pokémon, and suggests for Ethan to train at the lighthouse to make him less of a wimp.

Exploring Olivine City, Ethan enters the Olivine Café where he's provided the Strength HM from one of the sailers there. Ethan also visits the Olivine port area, but has nothing to do there for the time being. He then heads over to the lighthouse, and makes his way up it to reach the top floor. Here, Ethan finds the Olivine City Gym Leader, Jasmine, taking care of the sick lighthouse Pokémon, Ampharos. Before Jasmine could return to her gym duty, she asks for Ethan to head to Cianwood City in order to pick up a special medicine that would heal Ampharos.

After exiting the lighthouse, Ethan heads to Route 40 west of Olivine City. He then uses the Surf HM to surf his way down the southern water portion Route 40 until reaching Route 41. Surfing his way west through Route 41, Ethan passes by the Whirl Islands, which can't be accessed without the Whirlpool HM, until he makes landfall at Cianwood City.

Exploring Cianwood City, Ethan enters the pharmacy, and receives a SecretPotion from the clerk after hearing that the lighthouse Pokémon of Olivine City is sick. Ethan next makes his way over to the Cianwood City Gym to take on the fighting-type Gym Leader, Chuck, in order to obtain the Storm Badge. After defeating Chuck, his wife will reward Ethan with the Fly HM outside the gym.

Journeying East of Ecruteak City

After defeating Morty, Ethan can instead go east of Ecruteak City by surfing across the water on Route 42. Ethan would then be able to complete much of the content surrounding Mahogany Town.

Secret Route 34 Area

After obtaining the Surf HM, Ethan can return to Route 34, and surf to a secret area where three trainers will be. After defeating the three trainers, Ethan will be rewarded a Soft Sand.

Slowpoke Well's 2nd Level

After acquiring the Strength HM, Ethan can return to the Slowpoke Well, and move a boulder blocking the path that leads to a deeper area of the well. Here, a man will give Ethan a King's Rock.

First Step Into Kanto

Ethan can return to New Bark Town, and surf east onto Route 27 where a man will inform Ethan that the boy has taken his first step into the Kanto region. However, Ethan can't go any further than Tohjo Falls without being able to use the Waterfall HM.

The MooMoo Farm

Entering the stable of the Route 39 MooMoo Farm, Ethan heals a Miltank back to health by providing it some berries. Ethan is rewarded with the Snore TM for his effort.

Shuckle

Within a house of Cianwood City, a man named Kirk had been bullied by Silver into giving up a rare Pokémon. As a result, he asks for Ethan to take care of his other rare Pokémon, Shuckle, just in case Silver decides to come back for more. Ethan accepts to take care of Shuckle. At a later time, Kirk will ask for the Shuckle back believing that the danger is over, but will allow Ethan to keep it if he sees that Shuckle has already formed a strong bond with Ethan.

Lapras

Within the Union Cave, Ethan can surf to a hidden ladder to reach a deeper section of the cavern. Exploring this path, Ethan will eventually come across a water location at the end of it where he will find a wild Lapras that only appears on Fridays.

Ruins of Alph Continued

After acquiring the Surf HM, Ethan can surf the small pond south of the Kabuto-puzzle chamber to reach an Aerodactyl-puzzle chamber. In addition, Ethan can reach two hidden Ruins of Alph chamber locations through the Union Cave utilizing the Surf and Strength HMs. These two chambers have a Ho-Oh-puzzle and an Omanyte-puzzle respectively. Solving these puzzles cause more letter-types of Unown to appear in the Ruins of Alph.

    8) Mineral Badge

After defeating Chuck, Ethan returns to the lighthouse of Olivine City, and hands over the SecretPotion to Jasmine. The Gym Leader then uses the SecretPotion to heal Ampharos of its illness, much to Jasmine's delight. With Ampharos healed, Jasmine returns to her duty as the Gym Leader of Olivine City. Ethan next makes his way over to the Olivine City Gym to take on the steel-type Gym Leader, Jasmine, in order to obtain the Mineral Badge.

    9) Mahogany Town Radio Signal

After defeating Jasmine, Ethan returns to Ecruteak City, and goes through its east exit to arrive on Route 42. Ethan then surfs across the water passing by all the cave entrances of Mt. Mortar, and arrives at Mahogany Town. Exploring Mahogany Town, Ethan comes across a Souvenir Shop that has something off about it. He also sees that the Mahogany Town Gym is blocked by a person who wishes for the Gyarados to be calmed down at the Lake of Rage. Ethan also can't go east to Route 44 due to being blocked by a person selling RageCandyBars.

Ethan exits the north entrance of Mahogany Town to travel along Route 43, he either comes across a pay toll being controlled by two members of Team Rocket, or goes through the tall grass path beside it. After passing the toll, Ethan continues along Route 43 until he reaches the Lake of Rage. In the middle of the lake, Ethan witnesses a shiny red-colored Gyarados going on a rampage. Ethan battles the red Gyarados to calm the Pokémon down, and receives a Red Scale upon defeating it. The battle against the red Gyarados turned out to have been witnessed by the current Pokémon Champion, Lance, who's come to the Lake of Rage to investigate why the Magikarp are being forced to evolve into Gyarados.

Impressed by Ethan's skill calming down the red Gyarados, Lance asks for Ethan to join him on an investigation regarding a weird radio broadcast coming from Mahogany Town that's apparently causing the Magikarp to forcibly evolve into Gyarados. Lance discovers that the strange radio signal is coming from the Mahogany Town Souvenir Shop where he forces the clerks aside to open up a hidden stairwell that leads down to Team Rocket's Headquarters. Ethan follows after him as the two of them begin to make their way through Team Rocket's hideout to find the source of the radio signal.

Making their way deep into the hideout, Lance discovers that Ethan and him will need to discover two passwords in order to open up the main office. Ethan goes about defeating several Team Rocket members, and learns that the two passwords are "Slowpoke Tail" and "Raticate Tail". He then locates the hideout's main office, but before going in, he's greeted by Silver, who had been tailing behind Ethan. Silver points out that it's supposed to be him going about destroying Team Rocket, but ended up losing in a fight to Champion Lance while he was here. He also notes that he's not angry about losing to the Champion since it will just take stronger Pokémon to defeat him, but is actually angry about Lance scolding him about not loving his Pokémon enough. Before leaving, Silver complains that he hates how he lost to such a bleeding heart person, and that he has no time to deal with Ethan at this point.

Inputting the two passwords into the lock, Ethan enters into the main office of the hideout. Ethan comes across one of the Team Rocket Executives, who explains that they're currently within the office of their leader, Giovanni, after he disbanded the team three years ago. The Executive informs Ethan that they've been standing guard believing that Giovanni will return one day, and goes about battling Ethan in an attempt to defend the hideout. The Executive ends up being defeated by Ethan, who races out of the room in order to warn the other Team Rocket members of the danger their headquarters is now in. Investigating the main office, Ethan comes across a Murkrow, who tells the boy that the password into the room broadcasting the Mahogany Town radio signal is "Hail Giovanni".

Ethan makes his way through the hideout to the room broadcasting the radio signal, and inputs the password on the lock. Before he could enter however, he's stopped by a female Rocket Executive with a Team Rocket member at her side. The female Executive threatens to thrash Ethan in a 2-on-1 battle, but has her efforts stopped by Lance, who arrives to support Ethan. While Lance takes on the Team Rocket member, Ethan defeats the female Executive. Despite their defeat, and knowing that their Mahogany Town Headquarters is done with at this point, the female Executive leaves off gloating to Ethan and Lance that none of this matters now since they got a bigger plan in store for everyone. At this point, Team Rocket completely retreats from Mahogany Town.

Mt. Mortar

On Route 42, Ethan can enter the massive mountain cave known as Mt. Mortar for exploration. However, one area can't be accessed until Ethan has the Waterfall HM.

EXP Share

After obtaining the Red Scale from the Red Gyarados, Ethan can return to Mr. Pokémon's house, who becomes highly interested by the Red Scale in Ethan's possession. He offers Ethan an EXP Share trade for the Red Scale.

Hidden Lake of Rage House

On Route 43, Ethan can take a different path north that leads into a forest area west of the Lake of Rage. Going deep into the area, Ethan comes across a house where a man provides Ethan the Hidden Power TM.

Whirl Islands

Having obtained the Whirlpool HM, Ethan can return to the Whirl Islands on Route 41, and enter into the island cavern for exploration. However, Ethan can't reach the deepest area of the cavern without the Waterfall HM.

    10) Glacier Badge

With the fight against Team Rocket over for now, Lance apologizes to Ethan for letting the boy do much of the fighting, and admits that he's a bit concerned about the boy (Silver) he fought against earlier. Entering into the hideout's radio broadcasting room, Lance investigates the primary machine, and sees that there's no simple off-switch. He deduces that their only option is to defeat the six Electrodes that are powering up the machine, and decides for he and Ethan to split up the job to defeat three Electrodes each. After defeating the Electrodes, the radio broadcasting machine finally shuts off, which results in the Gyarados at Lake of Rage finally calming down.

Lance thanks Ethan for helping out with the investigation, and rewards the boy with the Whirlpool HM that he came across exploring around the hideout. He next asks Ethan if the boy is going to continue aiming to be the Pokémon Champion, which Ethan agrees with. Understanding Ethan's determination, Lance leaves off hoping to see the boy again somewhere down the line. After exiting Team Rocket's Headquarters, Ethan heads over to the Mahogany Town Gym to take on the ice-type Gym Leader, Pryce, in order to obtain the Glacier Badge.

    11) Goldenrod Radio Tower Takeover

After defeating Pryce, Ethan exits the gym, but suddenly gets a call from Professor Elm. The professor informs Ethan that something is odd about the current Goldenrod Radio Tower broadcasts, because it keeps talking about Team Rocket. Professor Elm asks if Ethan believes this is the return of Team Rocket, but rethinks it a moment after finding it too unbelievable to be true, and hangs up.

Ethan returns to Goldenrod City to find out what's going on, and realizes that members of Team Rocket have taken over the city. He enters the Goldenrod Radio Tower, and sees it crawling with members of Team Rocket. Ethan fights his way up through the Radio Tower, but comes across a door on the 3rd Floor that can't be opened up without some sort of key. He continues to make his way through the Team Rocket infested Radio Tower, and manages to reach the Director on the 5th Floor. However, the Director is revealed to have been a Team Rocket Executive impostor. He offers to tell Ethan where they stashed the real Director if the boy manages to defeat him. After being defeated, the Executive reveals that they stashed the Director in an underground warehouse connected to the Goldenrod Tunnel. The Executive also provides Ethan with the Basement Key in order to open the locked door in the Goldenrod Tunnel.

Arriving in the Goldenrod Tunnel, Ethan uses the Basement Key on the locked door, and enters into another section of the underground complex. Before entering the next area, Silver catches up to Ethan again having tailed him back to Goldenrod City, and is ready to face Team Rocket himself, but also chooses to battle against Ethan in order to repay the debt of his previous defeats. Silver is defeated once more, but begins to question what it is that's not allowing him to beat Ethan. Thinking it over, Silver wonders if what Lance told him about earlier was correct he hasn't been providing his Pokémon enough love and trust. Despite now being in a state of confusion, Silver leaves off telling Ethan that this isn't going to keep him from one day being the world's greatest Pokémon trainer.

After Silver leaves, Ethan goes into the next underground room, and solves a wall-puzzle in order to reach the next room, which is the underground warehouse. Making his way through the warehouse, Ethan eventually comes across the captive Radio Tower Director, who provides the boy with a Card Key in order to open the locked door on the Radio Tower's 3rd Floor. Afterwards, Ethan goes up a nearby stairwell, and exits into the basement floor of the Goldenrod Department Store.

Making his way back to the Goldenrod Radio Tower, Ethan heads up to the 3rd Floor, and opens up the door in order to reach the main Team Rocket members that have taken control of the building. Going up to the 5th Floor beyond the closed door, Ethan has a rematch against the female Executive that tried to stop him back at the Mahogany Town hideout. He then takes on the lead Executive, who explains that they've taken over the Radio Tower in order to try to communicate with their boss in the hopes that their continued existence will finally bring Giovanni back. Ethan defeats this Executive as well, who realizes that he was not up to the task to continue leading Team Rocket in Giovanni's absence. The Executive announces that like Giovanni before him, he will disband Team Rocket at this very moment. Afterwards, Team Rocket is no more, and are gone from Goldenrod City.

After Team Rocket's disbandment, the Radio Tower Director meets with Ethan, who thanks the boy for saving the Johto region. As a reward, the Director gives Ethan either the Rainbow Wing or the Silver Wing. He explains further that there once was a Tower in the place of the Goldenrod Radio Tower where the feather was discovered. The Director deduces that for the Rainbow Wing, it probably has some sort of connection to the Bell Tower in Ecruteak City while the Silver Wing probably has some sort of connection to the Whirl Islands.

Mahogany Town to Blackthorn City

After obtaining the Glacier Badge, Ethan can finally exit east of Mahogany Town, and travel all the way to Blackthorn City. However, the entrance to the Blackthorn City Gym will be blocked by a man standing at the entrance until Team Rocket is cleared out from Goldenrod City.

    12) Rising Badge

From Mahogany Town, Ethan goes east along Route 44 until he reaches the west entrance to the Ice Path. Making his way through the Ice Path, Ethan comes across the Waterfall HM that had been dropped on the ground. Ethan then traverses the rest of the Ice Path until exiting out the southern entrance where he arrives at Blackthorn City. Ethan then heads over to the Blackthorn City Gym to take on the dragon-type Gym Leader, Clair, in order to obtain the Rising Badge. Despite defeating Clair, the Gym Leader refuses to believe that Ethan is ready to take on the Pokémon League, and tasks the boy to enter the Dragon's Den behind the gym in order to locate a Dragon Fang.

Ethan accepts the task, and enters the Dragon's Den. He bypasses a whirlpool using the Whirlpool HM, and manages to find the Dragon Fang deep within the den. Clair greets Ethan after he manages to find the Dragon Fang, and hands him the Rising Badge admitting that he's proven to be strong enough to take on the Pokémon League. Clair informs Ethan that he can reach the Indigo Plateau Pokémon League by taking the route to the east of New Bark Town. She also leaves off warning Ethan not to lose as it will make her feel even worse for having lost to the boy.

Route 45 and the Dark Cave

Ethan can go south of Blackthorn City along Route 45 for a bit of training, as well as reaching the north entrance of the Dark Cave. The north portion of the Dark Cave is the section that couldn't be accessed previously due to a cliff.

Kiyo of Mt. Mortar

After obtaining the Waterfall HM, Ethan can return to Mt. Mortar, and explore the deepest part of the cavern after bypassing the waterfall. Eventually, Ethan would come across the Kanto Fighting Dojo master, Kiyo, who's using Mt. Mortar as his spot to train. Kiyo challenges Ethan to a fight, but results in his defeat. As a reward, Kiyo offers Ethan a Tyrogue that can evolve into either Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, or Hitmontop.

Ho-Oh or Lugia

After obtaining the Rainbow Wing or Silver Wing from the Goldenrod City Director, Ethan can either return to Ecruteak City to climb the Bell Tower in order to face off against Ho-Oh at the top, or go to Route 41's Whirl Islands after obtaining the Waterfall HM in order to face off against Lugia in the deepest area of the cavern.

    13) Pokémon League

After completing Clair's task, Ethan returns to New Bark Town, and is rewarded with a Master Ball from Professor Elm for completing the Johto Gym Challenge. Ethan then surfs west along Route 27 where he's greeted by a man claiming that this is Ethan's first step into the Kanto region. Ethan next enters the Tohjo Falls cave from the east entrance, and uses the Waterfall HM in order to get over the waterfalls, and reach the eastern exit up on the cliff. Continuing east along Route 27, Ethan eventually turns north onto Route 26, and travels along said route until he reaches the entrance gate to the Pokémon League.

At the Pokémon League entrance, a guard checks to see if Ethan has obtained all eight Johto badges. Seeing that he has all eight, he allows Ethan to continue on to enter Victory Road. Ethan makes his way through Victory Road, but before making his way through exit towards the Pokémon League, he's stopped by Silver, who believes that he's now a lot stronger than Ethan.
