Recap / Pokemon EC 34 Gathering Lights

Go To

Flash faces Sombra in a battle to determine the fate of Equestria. But when things seem to be at their bleakest, help arrives to turn the tide.

  • All Webbed Up: At the end of the chapter when everyone is making their escape from the cave, Thorax uses his Starider's webbing to capture and tie up Chrysalis and Doom Raizer.
  • Ambiguous Situation: The sudden effects the Crystal Heart shows at the end of the chapter and what triggers it. When Sombra has his Villainous Breakdown and grabs it, the heart suddenly turns a reddish black color, firing energy out of control, and eventually transforms Sombra into a gigantic monstrous titan by combining him with Tyrandark, Alicormony, and Dischaos. Was this some hidden ability the Crystal Heart always had? Did Sombra somehow corrupt it when he grabbed it in his crazed state of mind? It is never made clear.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shining Armor, Grand Hoof, the professors, and the Equestria Gym Leaders arrive to help the group out when Sombra comes close to capturing Alicormony and Dischaos, as well as destroy the soundwave generators so the group can fight back.
  • The Cavalry: The current champion, former champion, professors, and Gym Leaders all come to help in the battle against Team Shadow.
  • Hope Spot: During the battle between Flash and Sombra, all six of Flash's Pokémon manage to gang up on Tyrandark and overpower it, seeming like they are on the verge of knocking it out. But unfortunately, Sombra declares they are too late, since he has already gathered all the Infinity Energy he needs from their battle.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When Sombra, Chrysalis, and Doom Raizer are all beaten, all the Team Shadow grunts immediately surrender. After all, if their three strongest members were beaten, what chance do they have?
  • Logical Weakness: Tyrandark's Shadow Cloak ability makes it almost impossible to hit in a dark area, like the cave Flash and Sombra battle in. But this can be countered by illuminating the area, like with attacks like Flamethrower or Aura Sphere.
  • Mythology Gag: The Equestria Gym Leaders arriving to help fight Team Shadow is similar to the Black and White games and XY anime, where the Gym Leaders of the region also arrived to help The Hero against the evil team as well.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Team Shadow manages to successfully repair the Crystal Heart and uses it to summon both Alicormony and Dischaos, and subsequently capture them in their Energy Traps. They are on the verge of winning, until The Cavalry arrives to help the group out.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: The whole incident of dealing with Team Shadow finally helps Flash realize his reason for being strong, a question that has been hanging over his head since he first battled Thorax. He realizes his reason for being strong is so only good dreams from kind people come true, and he will stop any selfish and destructive dreams like the ones of Sombra and Team Shadow.
  • One-Winged Angel: Sombra is transformed by the Crystal Heart into a monstrous titan, as well as gaining the powers of Tyrandark, Alicormony, and Dischaos since they were forcibly fused with him.
  • Taking the Bullet: One of the first things Sombra does after his transformation is try to blast Flash, who is holding the Shadow Spear. Shining Armor pushes Flash out of the way of the attack, getting hit instead and critically injured.
  • Villainous Breakdown: As Sombra sees his plans falling apart around him, with Chrysalis and Doom defeated, his grunts surrendering with their spirits broken, and his own Tyrandark defeated by Flash and Shining Armor, he starts screaming that he is worthy, grabbing the Crystal Heart and roaring that no matter what happens, as long as he has it he can always start over again. Then things take a worse turn for him, when the Crystal Heart unexpectedly transforms him into a monster.
  • The Worf Effect: Even Alicormony and Dischaos are affected by the Energy Traps Team Shadow uses, and later both of them are affected by the Crystal Heart and forcibly combined with Sombra and Tyrandark into an Eldritch Abomination. Some dialogue from Alicormony implies that she and Dischaos are not a full-power during this though, saying they have recovered very little since the last time they were in the human world.
