Recap / Phineas And Ferb Road To Danville

Go To

While Phineas and Ferb make a quilt, Dr. Doofenshmirtz and Perry the Platypus end up stranded in the desert and must make their way back to civilization.

Tropes

  • Change the Uncomfortable Subject: To take his mind off his guilt for leaving Perry behind, Doof decides to talk about kreplach. The old woman on the bus talks about how she used to enjoy kreplach as a little girl, until Doof stops the bus.
  • Comic-Book Time: Buford once again points out that it has been a long summer.
  • Conscience Makes You Go Back: Dr. Doofenshmirtz feels guilty about ditching Perry the Platypus at the bus station, and goes back for him with the jet pack.
  • Continuity Nod: Doof has an epiphany about the one thing in his life that has been holding him back. And it wasn't his parents failing to show up for his own birth.
  • Crazy Cat Lady: Buford is not thrilled that today's big idea is to make a quilt. But then Isabella points out that Buford doesn't have to hang out with them all the time, but Buford changes his mind, since he does not want to play alone and suggests he'll turn into a "cat kid".
    Phineas: What's a "cat kid"?
Buford: It's a kid version of a cat lady.
Buford: You're always there for me, man!
  • Desert Skull: Doof hangs a lampshade on this trope when he and Perry walk past a cow's skull in the desert.
Doofenshmirtz: Why do we always see cow skulls in the desert? And why do you only see the skull? Did the body die somewhere else? It makes no sense!
  • I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham: At the beginning of the episode, Buford is reluctant to join the others in making a quilt. At the end of the episode, Buford is all hyped up on quilt-making, while everyone else feels it wasn't as much fun as they were expecting.
  • Lured into a Trap: Perry enters D.E.I. expecting to be trapped, but Doof explains he has no time to trap Perry because of the play.
  • Minimalist Cast: Since the brunt of the episode is focused on the Doof and Perry story, Dan Povenmire is practically the only actor with lines. (Phineas and the gang have lines at the beginning and end, and there are only a few other characters with lines, including Rodney, the stage manager, the bus conductor, the old woman on the bus, and the actress on stage. Perry also has a brief chatter, but it may have been reused from past chatters.)
  • Never My Fault: Doof blames everything that has gone wrong with his life on Perry, but Perry moves his accusing finger to himself, but Doof still stubbornly insists on blaming everything on Perry.
  • No Animals Allowed: Perry gives Doof two bus tickets, but, unfortunately, no animals are allowed on the bus, so Doof goes on the bus by himself. But Conscience Makes You Go Back when Doof starts to feel guilty about leaving Perry in the desert.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Among Doof's ramblings to Perry are very non-sequitur stories, such as how both of his arms ended up with pure titanium limbs.
    • Doof had his third realization today. He had two earlier but he didn't share them with Perry.
  • Out of Focus: This is the first episode to focus almost entirely on the Perry and Doof plotline, while the Phineas and the Gang plot only appears at the beginning and end. Meanwhile, neither Candace nor Major Monogram appear at all.
  • Race Against the Clock: Doofenshmirtz hopes to get back to Danville in time for his cue in a L.O.V.E.M.U.F.F.I.N. theatrical production so Rodney (Doof's understudy) doesn't steal the spotlight.
  • Shout-Out:
    • To the Road to ... film series and the Family Guy episodes parodying them, the first three of which were directed by Dan Povenmire before he left Family Guy to create Phineas and Ferb.
    • Doof claims his other arm is also titanium because he got his arm stuck under a boulder, a reference to the film 127 Hours.
    • Doof stops the bus outside giant sculptures of a tyrannosaurus rex and a brontosaurus, a reference to a real-life roadside attraction in Cabazon, California often referred to as the Cabazon Dinosaurs made famous in the film Pee-wee's Big Adventure.
    • The actress's line is "I shall never go hungry again."
  • Solar-Powered Magnifying Glass: "Hey, look how big the sun is through this magnifying glass! Ow ow ow! No, really, it's huge, you should see it!"
  • Variations on a Theme Song: Doofenshmirtz sings his own lyrics to Perry's theme. "Doofy Doofy Doof-y, Doofy Doofy Doof-y, Doofenshmirtz!"
