Recap / Phineas and Ferb "Live and Let Drive"

Go To

Doctor Doofenshmirtz plans to use one of his inators to rid himself of the only race car driver who has a chance to defeat him.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: The race announcers are not sure how to pronounce Doof's name, so they call him "Dorkenshmitz", "Doofenshmuntz", "Dumpendork", "Doifenshmuntz" and "Dirkenshpluntz".
  • The Big Race: This episode is centered around the Montevillebad Grand Prix, and it is also the second episode focused on stock-car racing after "The Fast and the Phineas".
  • Bilingual Bonus: The pool that Doofenshmirtz falls into has a French cleaner who says: "Gladis! J'ai une autre!" ("Gladis! I have another one!").
  • The Cameo: Double-0 0 and the villain who swapped lairs with Doof. Additionally, the racing commentators are pretty familiar to certain audiences.
  • Continuity Nod: Doof reveals he modified his Boomshlaka 320-I to meet Grand Prix specifications.
  • Demoted to Extra: Phineas, Ferb, and the other kids, to the point where they can only be seen briefly in the backyard behind the window.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Doof's attempt to use tacks to deflate Paolo Vanderbeek's tires would have worked better if he had released them in the back.
  • Funny Background Event: It's not made clear what Phineas and the gang are doing today since it is all seen from the window of the living room, but it somehow involves making a giant DNA strand out of a swimming pool, and a giant foot. As such, this is the only episode where Phineas doesn't have any lines.
  • I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham: When her parents invite her to join them in watching the race, Candace scoffs at how it could be interesting and only joins because she doesn't think Phineas and Ferb are up to anything. By the end of the episode, she's just as hooked as her parents and rushes out to go buy her own racing jumpsuit.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Racing commentators Adrian, Nigel, and Ian strongly resemble their VA's, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, respectively.
  • Out of Focus: Phineas and Ferb, minus some Funny Background Event gags, are not the focus of the episode, instead the show goes all Martini-flavored spy fiction and focuses more on Perry thwarting Doof.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: When Candace says she's not watching the race with her parents because she feels underdressed by doing so without her pleather jumpsuit, her father completely falls for that excuse.
  • Serial Numbers Filed Off: The city of Montevillebad and its circuit layout are clearly based on the famous Monaco race track.
  • Shout-Out: The episode is one large reference pool to the the James Bond franchise:
    • The title of the episode is a reference to Live and Let Die.
    • Norm finds metal teeth similar to those belonging to Bond villain Jaws, who first appeared in The Spy Who Loved Me.
    • Doof's jingle he commissioned for his Swanky New Evil Lair is very much a sound-alike for the title theme for Goldfinger.
    • Bond Expy Double-0 0 from Elementary, my Dear Stacy makes a brief appearance at the casino, and folds after losing Tic-Tac-Toe.
    • The casino Doof and Perry play at is in reference to Casino Royale (2006), especially the showdown between the two.
    • Perry driving into the ocean is reminiscent of The Spy Who Loved Me, which this subverts as the car folds into Perry's backpack and he dons a swimming outfit.
    • Perry drives a car similar to James Bond's signature Aston Martin DB5 (albeit with the name changed to Olson Martin, a reference to writer Martin Olson).
    • Doof has a Right-Hand Cat similar to Ernest Stavro Blofeld's.
    • The lairs' rocket chamber some resemblance to the one seen in Goldeneye, and comes with a Shark Pool that many of the bond films use.
  • Signing Off Catchphrase: Jeremy Clarkson's character uses his "And on that bombshell..." catchphrase from Top Gear.
  • Special Guest:
    • Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond voice the race commentators.
    • Actor and real-life race car driver Patrick Dempsey voices Paolo Vanderbeek.
  • Subverted Catchphrase: When Candace is bored by the race's preshow, she mutters that now would be a good a time as any to wonder where... well, you know.
  • Supervillain Lair: Doof gets to rent a pretty swanky one he found on a "lair exchange website".
  • This Is Reality: As Doof resorts to Wacky Racing-style tactics, one of the announcers suspects foul play. The others dismiss it, as "that kind of thing only happens in cartoons."
  • Understatement: Doof tells Perry he found his new lair in an international lair exchange website and says he "might've gotten the better end of this deal". The next scene shows a villain at Doof's bathroom about to unclog his toilet.
  • Wacky Racing: Doof's car includes several cheating apparati that would make Dick Dastardly proud. And of course, he loses when one of his tricks backfires.
