Recap / Phineas And Ferb Ladies And Gentlemen Meet Max Modem

Go To

When Linda is asked to reprise her identity as Lindana for an 80s revival concert, Lawrence asks Phineas and Ferb to turn him into an 80s pop star so he can show her he's exciting. Meanwhile, Doofenshmirtz stages a fake alien invasion to take over the Tri-State Area.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: When Lawrence first appears in his Max Modem costume, he says he feels strangely comfortable in it. That's because it looks very similar to Richard O'Brien's costume as Riff-Raff in the final scene of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
  • Alien Invasion: Invoked. Doofenshmirtz attempts to fake an alien invasion and announce himself as the king of the aliens, so that everyone in the Tri-State Area will do his bidding.
  • Artist and the Band: Lawrence is introduced as "Max Modem and the Mainframes".
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Ferb says Phineas' catchphrase, "I know what we're gonna do today!", in response to them deciding to make Lawrence a pop star.
  • Call a Rabbit a "Smeerp": Doofenshmirtz calls a megaphone his "Loud-inator".
  • Department of Redundancy Department:
Doofenshmirtz: You are being invaded... from space... by invaders from space!!!
  • Disapproving Look: Perry gives one to Major Monogram when he mentions that he should check on Doofenshmirtz after he's seen... playing with a hoop.
Major Monogram: That's it. That's all we got.
    • Of course, the hoop turns out to be yet another trap.
  • Everybody Knew Already: Apparently, Candace was the only one in her family unaware that her mother was Lindana.
Phineas: I can't believe she didn't know that.
  • Friendly Address Privileges: Candace is in disbelief that she sang backup for Lindana, who replies to call her "Mom".
Candace: "I just sang backup for Mom." Nah, just doesn't have the same ring.
  • Left the Background Music On: As Dr. Doofenshmirtz reveals his plot to stage an alien invasion, spooky theremin music plays. Then a shot change reveals there's an actual theremin in Doofenshmirtz's lab.
  • Literal Soapbox Speech: Doof, dressed as an alien, presents his speech standing on an actual soap box.
  • Mistaken for Clown: Before Doofenshmirtz even starts his speech announcing everyone he's a ruler of an alien invasion, a little girl walks by and asks her dad that she "want(s) to see the clown".
Father: Sally, he's no clown, he's a nutjob.
  • Non-Singing Voice: In-Universe. Linda admits that she was lip-syncing, even in the 80s, as Lindana. Lindana's singing voice was provided by Olivia Olson (who also voices Vanessa).
  • Noodle Incident: Maybe it's a good thing we didn't see whatever incident led to this:
Doofenshmirtz: Mustn't forget to open the roof. A little something we learned from the Diarrhea-Inator debacle, right, Perry the Platypus?
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Dr. Doofenshmirtz programmed the Alien-inator with all of his knowledge of Perry the Platypus and his fighting tactics, giving the Alien-inator the ability to defend itself. Unfortunately, like Doofenshmirtz himself, the Alien-inator is unable to recognize Perry without his fedora, and Perry is able to strike the machine from the side while it attempts to "find" him.
  • Recycled Animation: One of the crowd shots seen before Max Modem starts his act is recycled from "Tip of the Day", shoelaces tied on fingers and all.
  • Shout-Out: Dr. Doofenshmirtz describes his holographic aliens as "invaders, from space", and they move back and forth like the enemies from Space Invaders.
  • Singing Voice Dissonance: Candace and the other backup singers for Lindana all gain male voices.
  • Tough Room: Doofenshmirtz says this after he shows Perry the Platypus his alien costume (to a much less-than-enthusiastic response).
