Recap / Peg Plus Cat S 1 E 24 The Sparkling Sphere Problem

Go To

We open on Peg and Cat dressed as knights in the forest. Peg explains that they're playing at Knights of the Round Table, running in circles around the table. Then, a voice calls for help but at that moment, their helmets get stuck together. Cat says that whoever needs help can't count on them, which makes Peg think of literal counting, so she has them pull apart on the count of three. They try but fail, so Peg tries again counting by twos and it works.

The voice calling for help then turns out to be Ramone, who is now a wizard, trapped in a bubble. Peg asks Ramone how a normal little girl and her cat could help a powerful wizard, but he floats away before he can answer. Peg and Cat walk off, bouncing and counting by twos in song, but soon grow bored of it.

Just at that moment, they meet the Toad, and ask if he's seen a sparkling, floating sphere. Toad says that he can't help but he knows a sphere-loving dragon who lives in a cave. They try to haggle with him by giving him Peg's helmet, but he gives them a blue block instead of the sparkling sphere Peg wanted. When Peg tells him off for this, he sprays it with something to make it sparkle and (briefly) float. Peg explains that the block is still a cube, not a sphere.

The mermaid shows up and sings that sparkling spheres usually have to do with Ramone. Peg explains that Ramone is in danger, and the mermaid keeps singing, revealing that maybe the King, who's known to steal shiny objects, kidnapped him. The Toad hands Peg her helmet back. Then, the mermaid gives her a red diamond, explaining that its shape is called a rhombus, and a golden rectangular prism which she explains has magical powers.

Peg and Cat get to the castle, but some knocked-over poles are in the way. She sees him using the rectangular prism to scratch his butt, which inspires her to try using it to get the poles out of the way, and it works. They arrive at a locked door, and when Cat wonders if there's a key, Peg remembers that the mermaid said that knowing shapes was key to solving problems. She wonders if that means that the rhombus is the key. Turns out, it is.

They get to the throne room, where the Pig is King. Peg interrogates him, while Cat plays with the Pig's boxes of triangles. Peg then sees Ramone floating outside, so she apologises for the mess and leaves with Cat.

They roll down the hill to the cave, where rocks fall and block the entrance. Luckily, Peg makes them disappear with the rectangular prism. She considers singing the praises of it (literally) but changes her mind and they go into the cave.

In the cave, the dragon is bouncing on Ramone in his sphere, but our protagonists don't see him. Ramone says, "I'm under here!", prompting Peg to say, "Under where?" which makes everyone giggle. Peg uses the prism to teleport the dragon away, revealing Ramone. He tells Peg he's "lost his sparkle", so she freaks out. She considers counting backwards from... ten by twos? However, Ramone has a better plan: have everyone who believes in wizards count forward by twos.

Thankfully, the mermaid and some fish show up in the pond, and everyone believes in wizards because there's a wizard right there. Peg has the viewers count forwards by twos as well, and it works— Ramone is free from his sphere. Peg asks him why he floats in a sphere and he sings a song explaining why. As it turns out, he tried different shapes but they didn't work, so he gave them up for a sphere.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal:
    • Cat wears a knight's helmet, as does Toad briefly, and also a bird.
    • The Pig is seen wearing a crown and a necklace.
  • Ambiguously Evil: The dragon was using Ramone's sphere like a bouncy ball, but he helped restore his sparkle, so it's unlikely that he was responsible for it being gone.
  • Blatant Lies: When Peg tells Toad that the block is a cube, not a sphere, he replies that it's the latest in sphere technology, improved so it never rolls away.
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: Ramone's "sparkle" can be brought back by having everyone count by twos who believes in wizards.
  • Distressed Dude: Ramone spends most of this episode trapped in a sphere and in need of rescue.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: Discussed and defied when Peg says, "If you don't believe in wizards—- ta-da! Here's a wizard! What more proof do you need?!".
  • Floating in a Bubble: Ramone spends the bulk of the episode floating around in a sparkling, translucent bubble. Justified because it's not an ordinary soap bubble, but rather a magic one. At the end of the episode, Peg, Cat, the dragon, the mermaid, and the fish also float in identical bubbles.
  • Heh Heh, You Said "X": When Ramone says, "I'm under here!" and Peg asks, "Under where?", Cat says, "Ha ha, you said, 'underwear'!".
  • Left the Background Music On: The theme that plays when Peg says, "big problem" is played on brass horns.
  • Pun: Upon remembering what the rhombus is called, Cat says, "Ay carhombus!".
  • Right For The Wrong Reason: Peg thinks that counting by twos worked better than counting normally to unstick herself and Cat. Actually, it's more likely that it worked because they tried again.
  • Russian Reversal: Peg points out that usually Ramone helps her and Cat, but now they have to help him.
  • Variations On A Theme Tune: The theme counts by twos instead of normally.
