Recap / Peg + Cat S1E19 "The Race Car Problem"

Go To

Peg and Cat are at a junkyard, constructing a makeshift race car which Peg explains is for an upcoming race. A fanfare plays, signalling that the race is about to start, so they get in their car and try to drive to the track, but a wheel falls off. Thankfully, Cat replaces it with an old TV, but that obviously makes it bumpy and Cat ends up flying into a trash bin. However, Peg notices the trash bin and decides to use the lid.

Ramone announces the racers: the pirates in their boat-shaped car, the Teens in their pizza-shaped car, the Pig in his triangular car, and finally Peg and Cat. However, our protagonists are feeling a bit discouraged now because the other cars are a lot "bigger and cooler" than theirs. Peg wants to give up, but Ramone encourages her in song to persevere.

Initially, Peg and Cat don't do too well with the Teens doing six laps and the pirates four but them only one, however, they gain a bit of traction when everybody else stops for a snack. Then, the Teens drop out because they think it's nifty that their amount of laps is in the teens and don't want it to go into the twenties, and the pirates argue over who should drive and accidentally rip off their staring wheel, making them disqualified.

Thus, Peg, Cat, and the Pig are the only competitors left and the race is nearly over. Thankfully, the Pig is slowing down to play his triangle out of cockiness. However, the tube holding the race car together then breaks, prompting the familiar freak out-count backwards routine. Luckily, the parrot flies up with a telescope, which Peg uses to replace the broken tube.

Peg and Cat win, because the Pig gave up due to wanting a consolation prize (because they're triangular flags) and they sing a song about persistence, then another song sorting the contestants in order of number of completed laps.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal:
    • Cat wears goggles in this episode.
    • The parrot, in her pirate hat, features.
    • This is one of the episodes in which the Pig wears sunglasses.
  • An Aesop: This episode has a moral of never giving up.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Viv calls Peg "little Peggy" at one point.
  • Artistic License – Biology: Cat claims that the car smells like sweat as a result of his and Peg's hard work. In reality, even if Peg had been sweating really hard, it wouldn't have been stinky since she's only five or six and body odour begins at puberty. Cats also only sweat from their paws, so it's doubtful that Cat would've realistically made enough sweat to stink up the car.
  • Artistic License – Cars: The Teens' car runs on potato chips and red juice, which is not possible in real life, because fuel works by burning something, and juice is obviously not flammable and neither are potato chips when they're wet.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Peg claims that she and Cat put a lot of "love, cardboard, and sweat" into their car.
  • The Dinnermobile: The Teens' car is fashioned like a pizza.
  • Disqualification-Induced Victory: Peg and Cat win, but it's only because the Teens and the Pig gave up and the pirates' steering wheel broke.
  • Fight for the Last Bite: During the eating scene, two of the pirates can be seen and heard arguing over some food.
  • I Want My Mommy!: When the pirates lose their staring wheel, Greybeard can be heard calling for his mother.
  • Wasn't That Fun?: While the pirates are initially scared when they go careening out of control after losing their steering wheel, they sincerely think it's fun after they crash into the pond.
