Recap / Peg + Cat S1E15 "The Dinosaur Problem"

Go To

Peg and Cat have apparently time-travelled to dinosaur times as they are in a prehistoric valley. Peg suggests they go and look at the view but Cat is worried they'll get lost. Peg is very confident, though, and leads Cat and three dinosaurs along while she and Cat ride on one. The dinosaurs bounce along in the mud while Peg sings about it. However, Cat ends up attached to the dinosaur's tail and gets shaken up, making him dizzy.

There is a problem: a large boulder is blocking the view. However, that problem is soon solved because three dinosaurs and Cat push it along. The "boulder" then turns out to be an egg and it hatches into a T. Rex. This causes a new problem as it chases them away and they get lost.

On their way back, Cat gets tangled up in a bush but enjoys it because it has three balls of vine attached. Peg suggests Triceratops free Cat with his horns but he doesn't understand, so she draws a diagram. This works, but then Peg gets stuck to a sticky plant. She suggests Stegosaurus use her spines to free Peg but Stegosaurus also doesn't understand so Peg draws another diagram. This works. The T. Rex then shows up and chases them to a river, but neither Peg nor Cat can swim, so she asks Brachiosaurus to bridge the river with his tail. Apparently, needing diagrams to get things is a thing with dinosaurs because he needs one too.

The dinosaur footprints are blocking the way and Peg... only partially freaks out? She doesn't say her line... well, anyway, Cat makes her count backwards anyway. She then, as usual, gets inspired by Cat, this time by him walking in a pattern similarly to how the dinosaurs were. It inspires her to walk in another pattern to get over the footprints.

They're back in the valley but the T. Rex has followed them. Ramone, in explorer garb, arrives and gives the T. Rex commands like a dog. Apparently, they're trainable as babies. Peg, Cat, and Ramone then play around riding on dinosaurs.

This episode provides examples of

  • All Animals Are Dogs: Or at least as hatchlings, all Tyrannosaurus Rexes can be trained like dogs.
  • Catchphrase: "Horn" is Triceratops's nonsensical catchphrase. Peg also says, "Really big problem" as usual and Ramone says, "I do what I can" as usual.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": As well as Cat, all the dinosaurs are named after their species.
  • Filthy Fun: The dinosaurs enjoy bouncing along and making patterns in the mud.
  • Fluffy Tamer: Ramone trains baby T. Rexes.
  • Furry Reminder: Cat enjoys playing with the stringy vines.
  • Irony: Peg tells everyone to pay attention to their surroundings before getting stuck to a plant she doesn't notice.
  • Nice Kitty...: When the T. Rex follows Peg and co. to the valley, she says, "Um, nice T. Rex, good T. Rex...".
  • Non Sequitur: Triceratops randomly says, "Horn!" even when nobody's mentioning his horns.
  • One-Word Vocabulary: Subverted. It seems as though all Triceratops can say is "horn" and initially Cat thinks so too, but it turns out he's perfectly articulate and just chooses to nonsensically shout, "Horn!" because it "does the trick".
  • Subverted Catchphrase: Peg doesn't say, "I am totally freaking out" despite being nervous, yet Cat makes her count backwards anyway. Usually, when she's nervous, Cat leaves her alone unless she says her catchphrase.
  • Tempting Fate: Peg says, "It's not like [the newly-hatched T. Rex] has seen us or anything", right before it sees them. She then adds, "It's not like it's walking towards us," which it then does. Later, she says that "At least things couldn't get any worse," but then asks Cat if he has any graham crackers. When he responds in the negative, she shouts, "It's worse! What are we going to do?!".
  • That's No Moon: The T. Rex's egg is mistaken for a boulder.
  • Time Travel Episode: Implied. Peg refers to the setting as "prehistoric", meaning they likely time-travelled there as opposed to dinosaurs being extant.
  • Toilet Humour: Cat helps push the boulder with his heinie.
