Recap / Peg + Cat S1E11 "The Birthday Cake Problem"

Go To

It begins at the pizza place. Peg claims that she and Cat run the pizza place and that the Teens are going to be eating at the restaurant. Peg then explains that Mac makes the pizzas, Ramone approves them, and she and Cat serve them. However, she has a problem: the big pizza is on a small tray, so it's in danger of falling. However, as they run around in fear, the pizza gets flung into the air and lands on a larger tray, while the smaller pizza that was initially on the large tray lands on the small tray, so problem solved.

Peg then serves the pizzas, while introducing the Three Bears (who are playing as a band), the skiing penguins, the dinosaurs, Ludwig van Beethoven, and the Teens, who describe the pizza as "rocking", to Peg and Cat's delight. The teens then say that it's their friend Jonah's birthday and request a three-layered birthday cake with creamy vanilla frosting. Peg accepts but first wants photos and a video of the Teens, who brag about how old they are and show off their possessions.

Jonah then shows up, which worries Peg as they haven't started the cake yet. However, they quickly make it. Tessa then suggests putting on blueberries and strawberries, having heard from Jonah's sister that he likes them. Cat drops the blueberries on, but Peg thinks they should be put on more intricately. They then put gloves on but Cat does not know how to decorate in a pattern. Peg defines a pattern and they put the berries on in order of two blueberries, one strawberry, repeat. The last strawberry ends up on Cat's head.

Jessie then lets Peg and Cat know that Jonah's brother, sister, and cousin have arrived. Ramone sets out to arrange the lighting while Peg and Cat put the candles on, but Peg freaks out because they do not know how old Jonah is. Luckily, Cat accidentally plays the video which says that Jonah is two years older than Mora, and since Mora is fourteen, that means Jonah is sixteen. Mac lights the candles and Peg serves the cake. Then, aliens arrive. Finally, there is a song about the teens.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal:
    • The penguins wear ski helmets.
    • Cat wears gloves at one point.
  • Anachronism Stew: This is supposedly in the modern age, but dinosaurs and Beethoven are alive.
  • Birthday Episode: It's the birthday of the Teens' friend Jonah.
  • Like Is, Like, a Comma: The Teens speak in, like, this stereotypical manner.
  • Pun: When putting the berries on, Cat says that it's the best you ever "sawberry".
  • Subverted Catchphrase: Instead of saying, "I am totally freaking out!", Peg says, "What am I about to start totally doing?!".
  • Teens Are Monsters: Mostly inverted because teens are seen as cool, however Peg does say that "when teenagers want something, they want it right away".
  • Totally Radical: The food is described as "rocking" and the Teens speak in jazz talk. Peg thinks this is due to their age.
