Recap / Parks And Recreation S 05 E 10

Go To

Ann and Chris are both busy prepping their respective bachelorette and bachelor parties for Leslie and Ben. Ann's party is going to be a typical bachelorette party with dancing, Jell-O shots and various penis-shaped candies and toys. The guys, on the other hand, have a more low-key night in store, as Ben's idea of a good time is beer and board games.

The guys indulge Ben in a game of Settlers of Catan. As the game comes to a close, Tom finally reaches his breaking point and suggests that they pay a visit to Eagleton's hot new bar, Essence, which specializes in "molecular mixology." The guys get to talking and quickly realize that none of them had bachelor parties before their weddings. Chris declares that tonight, everyone gets their own bachelor party experience.

Meanwhile, at the bachelorette party, all of Ann's diligent planning seems to be going to waste. Leslie discovers that Councilman Jamm is moving forward with plans to turn Lot 48 into a new Paunch Burger franchise location. Leslie comes up with a plan to stop this, littering the pit with what she hopes will pass as sacred Wamapoke artifacts, and thus halt all construction on the lot. But the second she does, she realizes she's made a horrible mistake, confesses her mess to the girls, and recruits them to help her fix it.

For the next stop of the bachelor party adventure, the guys visit Jerry's favorite ice cream parlor, where he first met Gayle. After raising a cone to Jerry, they talk about Andy's dream plans, which include a Colts game. Chris calls in a few favors and arranges for Colts owner Jim Irsay and Andy's favorite players Reggie Wayne and Andrew Luck to meet them at the Lucas Oil Stadium. The guys wrap up their adventure with a visit to one of Ron's favorite restaurants, St. Elmo's Steak House, where their meal is paid for by Roy Hibbert, the Indiana Pacers player who was previously employed by Entertainment 720.

The bachelorette party spends all night digging in Lot 48, their night miserable. To add insult to injury, their efforts were for nothing – Leslie's artifacts are found at the site the next day. They later meet with Ken Hotate of the Wamapoke Tribe, and Leslie privately confesses to him what she did. It's clear that Leslie's truly sorry, but the damage has been done.

The bachelor party turns out to be a great success, but the guys only wish that there was some way they could show Chris just how much they appreciated his efforts. They buy Chris a "Best Best Man" trophy and reassure him that someday he'll meet his perfect super fit health goddess. But Chris surprises the guys, saying that someone who shares all of his interests may not be what he's looking for anymore; all he really needs is someone who values happiness and friendship. This inspires Ben to set up Chris with reporter Shauna Mulwae-Tweep, who's excited to write a story on Chris' bachelor party adventure.

While meeting with Councilman Jamm and Leslie, Ken Hotate confirms that the artifacts were not legitimate. But before he lets Leslie confess, he pulls a surprising move and tells Jamm that he didn't like how he went back on his word with Leslie, as it reminds Ken of the way the settlers treated his ancestors. He threatens Pawnee Restaurant Association spokeswoman Kathryn Pinewood with not renewing the Paunch Burger contracts at the Wamapoke Casino if Jamm does not back down. This scares Jamm straight, and he agrees to put aside construction for now.

Tropes

  • As Himself: Appearances include Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, wide receiver Reggie Wayne and quarterback Andrew Luck at Lucas Oil Stadium, and Newt Gingrich at St. Elmo's, a famous Indy steakhouse.
  • Gender-Separated Ensemble Episode: Justified — Chris and Ann are throwing Ben's and Leslie's respective bachelor/ette parties.
  • Gilligan Cut: Leslie suggests the bachelorette party dig up the artifacts she threw in the construction site. Anne says "There's no way we're doing that." Smash cut to them doing that.
  • Haute Cuisine Is Weird: The strange "bar" that Tom takes the men to operates this way. Andy's beer is served to him in the form of a large cloud of blue cotton candy in a glass, Tom's cocktail is an "aromasphere" that the waiter chisels open to release a cloud of some kind, and Ron's whiskey comes in the form of a hand lotion, which is rubbed on his skin without prior warning. Another group of diners gets a "vodka served in the form of a flash of light," resembling the flash of a camera.
  • If Only You Knew: When the server at the steakhouse tells Ron he doesn't have to specify his whiskey should be served in liquid form, Ron tells him he'd be surprised.
  • Ironic Echo: Ron Swanson states, "Son, there's no wrong way to consume alcohol!" Later, in the unusual bar chosen by Tom, he exclaims that "this is the wrong way to consume alcohol."
  • Is That a Threat?: Ken Hotate suggests that if Jamm and Paunch Burger don't honor Leslie's original deal, he may renegotiate the contracts of the six locations in the Wamapoke casino.
Kathryn Pinewood: Is that a threat?
Ken Hotate: Yes, I thought that was pretty obvious.
  • Mythology Gag: A slight one on The Office. For Phyllis' bachelorette party, Jim is tasked with finding a stripper but he instead hires a Benjamin Franklin impersonator (Karen and Pam engage him in sexy talk anyway). For Leslie's bachelorette party, Ann hires an Abraham Lincoln impersonator stripper.
  • No Wrong Answers Except That One: Upon hearing that the party is going to a bar that specializes in experimental methods of consuming alcohol, Ron assures Tom that "there's no wrong way to consume alcohol". Upon seeing how the bar, Essence, serves its drinks (among other things, beer-infused cotton candy and alcohol distilled into vapors), Ron intones that "this is the wrong way to consume alcohol."
Ron: Can I ask if this entire establishment is a practical joke of some kind?
  • Politician Guest-Star: Newt Gingrich makes an appearance, with Jerry wondering if the two of them may have some blood relation due to their similar-sounding last names.
  • White Guilt: Ken Hotate invokes this against Jamm and Pinewood at the end, and even they squirm under him.
