Recap / Parks and Recreation - S02 E04

Leslie: Do you have like a first-date outfit I could borrow? Like, I don't know, a pair of cargo pants?

The Parks Department sees a news report that Councilman Dexhart has been caught up in another sex scandal. A chance remark leads to the Parks Department starting a contest to see who can get the most dirt on the others. Jerry doesn't want to participate but the others ignore his wishes.

Leslie is nervous about her upcoming "official" first date with Dave. She goes to Ann's house and tries on outfits. Ann suggests that they do a practice date to help Leslie deal with her nerves. Ann roleplays as Dave and treats Leslie terribly (based on the psychology class she took where fears were dealt with by "immersion therapy"), and Leslie completely bungles on answering even basic questions. Leslie is worried she'll drive Dave off, but Ann reassures her that she'll survive even if everything goes wrong.

When Tom tells everyone about Ron's two ex-wives who are both named Tammy, Ron decides to find some dirt on Tom. Meanwhile, Mark tells everyone about Jerry's adoptive mother being arrested for marijuana possession, but Jerry didn't know he was adopted, leading to Mark immediately feeling guilty. Ron reveals to Tom that he knows Tom's marriage to Wendy is a green-card marriage (because Wendy is from Canada). Ron promises that he won't tell anyone, but now Tom needs to find something about Ron. He goes to Mark for help, and although Mark is still feeling bad about what he told Jerry, he does tell Tom about a "friend of Ron's" named Duke Silver who hangs out at a bar in Eagleton.

Ann and Leslie get drunk, then Leslie goes to Dave's house to tell him he's lucky that she's dating him. She tells him she was freaked out by the first date but now she's not scared anymore. He takes her home.

At the Eagleton bar, Tom discovers that the saxophone player Duke Silver is Ron. He confronts Ron, who calls for a truce so no one will find out his secret. Tom promises not to tell anyone else about Ron's double life as long as he continues to hold up his promise about his own secret.

Mark doesn't want Ann to hear about his secrets from someone else so he goes to Ann's house and tells her all his secrets. After doing so, he realizes it was a bad idea. Although initially confused, Ann is ultimately flattered by the gesture.

The next morning, Leslie feels horrible for ruining her chances with Dave. He arrives at her office later and she starts to apologize, but he says she can make it up to them on their second date, thereby reassuring her the first date is already over. Leslie once again feels cheered up.

Tropes

  • Butt-Monkey: Jerry doesn't want to participate in the Department's game of finding the others' dirty secrets, but everyone, including Dave who isn't even playing, finds dirt on Jerry. He even finds out that he was adopted.
  • Citizenship Marriage: Ron figures out that Tom and Wendy are in this arrangement. Ironically, it's the white partner who needed the green card in this case, as Wendy is Canadian.
  • Earpiece Conversation: Discussed and Defied; Leslie assumes this is Ann's idea for coaching her through her first date with Dave (telling her it might seem like a good idea, but "it never works")... but Ann was really going to suggest a mock date.
  • Foreshadowing: Ron is quite taken with Tom's wife, setting up the Ron/Wendy relationship.
  • Historical In-Joke: David Duke, a former Grand Wizard of The Klan, actually did run for government office more than once.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Mark immediately feels terrible about inadvertently revealing to Jerry that he was adopted.
  • No Social Skills: A variation - Leslie is utterly awkward at her practice dating.
  • Oblivious Adoption: Mark discovers that Jerry's adoptive mother was arrested for marijuana possession. Jerry never knew he was adopted.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Ron's Duke Silver get-up has him in just a fedora, sunglasses, and a suit, and that's enough to keep others from finding out his identity. This is probably helped by the fact that he performs in Eagleton, where none of his Pawneean friends or co-workers would be caught dead hanging out, and Eagletonians would not go to Pawnee if their lives depended on it either.
  • Skewed Priorities: Donna, who is black, once donated money to the campaign of David Duke, a former KKK Grand Wizard who ran for government office. She said it was because he promised to lower taxes.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: During their practice date, Ann, who is roleplaying as Dave, asks Leslie if she has any nieces or nephews. Leslie answers she has a niece named "Torpel" before realizing that's not a real name and verbally backtracks to say her niece's name is Stephanie.
