We meet the ladies of Pan Am. Kate, who’s been recruited to work for the CIA and is on her first assignment which involves a passenger on her flight; Laura, her younger sister who’s the face of Pan Am after a Life magazine cover features her; Colette, the French flight attendant who discovers the man she had a fling with in Rome is aboard the flight with his wife and son; and Maggie, a trouble-making Bohemian-esque flight attendant covering as purser for Bridget, their disappeared colleague and girlfriend to their Captain, Dean. Dean is flying Pan Am’s newest airplane as his first assignment since his promotion and by his side as First Officer is Ted, a Navy test pilot turned Pan Am pilot since his discharge.
- Accidental Adultery: Collette doesn't know that her latest boyfriend is married until he's on the flight with his wife and son.
- Famed In-Story: Laura attracted a Life photographer who made her the cover of a magazine article. This inspires some good natured ribbing and jealousy from the other girls as she's the new girl.
- Naïve Newcomer: Laura knows very little about being a Pan Am stewardess and is fitting in with the others.
- Runaway Bride: Laura gets cold feet on her wedding day and ends up fleeing with the help of her sister.
