  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Gloria realises how much Ryan cares about her when he admits to killing Keenan, even though she could tell Glynn and get him put on death row. This is less endearing than many versions of this trope.

  • The Bus Came Back: Alvarez returns to Oz early in the episode.

  • Being Evil Sucks: Cloutier points out how much Vern's way of life has cost him. It surprisingly gets through.

  • Dirty Cop:
    • Howell has Ryan sent to the hole for no good reason.
    • Mineo initially questions Howell, only to relent as long as Claire does the paper work instead of him.

  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Burr is a ruthless bastard but it is clear he and Augustus have much affection for each other.

  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Invoked by Sister Pete who points out that Ryan's idea of love is very twisted and "often anything but love".

  • Enemy Mine: Despite their racism the Aryans are willing to work with Tidd to kill Said.

  • Easily Forgiven; Omar is let out of solitary by McManus soon after his assault of Eldridge. Unfortunately he is soon sent back when he attacks Guerra to protect Alvarez.

  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Not really "good" but Vern genuinely decides he wants to make peace with Beecher to Robson's confusion.

  • Falsely Reformed Villain: Tidd fakes being remorseful so he will be allowed to join the Muslims and have the opportunity to kill Said.

  • Hypocrite: Beecher and Arif both think Said should give Tidd a chance considering the men he has accepted in the past.

  • I Have a Family: Yixhue attempts this right before his death. Unfortunately for him, Morales doesn't give a shit:
    Yixhue: My wife, my son...
Morales: They will mourn you, forever.

  • Jerkass: Burr is rather unpleasant and doesn't care when Said points out his killing of Adebisi was self-defense.

  • Love Makes You Evil: Burr says he dropped out of school and got into a life of crime to support his family.

  • Love at First Sight: Glynn immediately feels connected to Floria and is quick to open up to her about his problems with his wife.

  • Manipulative Bastard:
    • Morales manipulates Yixhue into thinking Burr has a grudge against him and the other refugees When in reality Burr has no opinion of them either way.
    • Tidd is convincing in his performed reformation. Said is suspicious but otherwise smart people like Beecher and Sister Pete fall for it hook, line and sinker.

  • Not Me This Time; Burr truly has no idea what is going on when McManus has him put in the cage for wanting to kill the refugees.

  • Pet the Dog: Vern tries to be supportive of Carrie and assures her that Hank will come back to his family eventually.

  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Morales holds no grudge against Alvarez for trying to kill Guerra since Guerra tried to kill Miguel first.

  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Burr mentions his harrowing experience in Vietnam.

  • Surrounded by Idiots: Busmalis is a useless assistant but Glynn can't have any other prisoners replace him as they wouldn't be much more useful.

  • The Starscream: Burr is able to quickly take over leadership of the homeboys from Poet.

  • The Un-Favourite; Beecher is convinced he has become this to his parents.

  • Voice of Reason: Sister Pete tries to make Gloria see that Ryan is bad news. She also encourages Beecher to make peace with Vern.

  • Villain Respect: Keller is impressed Ryan is able to score with Howell.

  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Morales kills Yixhue as soon as he has gets what he wants out of him.
