Richard Brown and his Committee of Safety lay siege to the Ridge, demanding Claire be surrendered to stand trial for murder. Eventually, Claire and Jamie capitulate with the caveat that Tom Christie accompany them to ensure they arrive safely to the courthouse. However, due to the rising political tensions in the colonies, Brown's plan to find a judge for a trial does not go as expected and it is quickly revealed that he is more interested in revenge than justice.

Tropes

  • Agonizing Stomach Wound: Ezra dies from the bullet wound Claire gave him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: After the Committee of Safety take Jamie and threaten to return him to Scotland, the Cherokee, John Quincy Myers and Young Ian come to his rescue.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Subverted. Amon Oakes tells Jamie that he knows where Claire's been taken in order to invoke this trope, which almost works, but then Young Ian reveals that he and his compatriots also know where she is, and Chief Bird shoots Oakes dead.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: When the Ardsmuir men, Lizzie, the Beardsley twins, and the Bugs eventually arrive, it is too late; Claire and Jamie have reluctantly surrendered and have gone into custody.
  • Convicted by Public Opinion: When the Committee of Safety arrest Jamie and Claire for their alleged crimes, the townsfolk believe they are guilty even before a trial. The members of the Committee of Safety make things worse when they vocally declare who Jamie and Claire are and what their crimes are in every village they travel to. This behavior leads to a violent riot where Jamie and Claire’s wagon is stoned, injuring Claire.
  • Empty Nest: Discussed by Brianna and Roger. Roger points out that if they tell Jemmy about time travel, he may one day decide to go through the stones and leave them forever.
  • Furniture Blockade: Jamie and Claire move their dining table and another piece of furniture to block the window from the bullets.
  • Guilty Until Someone Else Is Guilty: Until Malva’s murderer is found, Claire is in prison for a crime she did not commit.
  • Impaled Palm: Oakes ends up with one after futily holding up a hand to ward off a bullet. It goes straight through his palm and into his eye, killing him instantly.
  • It's Personal: Double Subversion: Richard claims he is arresting Claire because he believes she murdered Malva. Richard also acknowledges what his brother and the other men did to Claire was wrong and unforgivable. But then he tells Claire how Lionel was his brother, and he loved him, making all of Richard's actions personal.
  • Last Stand: Jamie and Claire's odds are stacked against them when the Committee of Safety comes to arrest Claire. Jamie and Claire are outgunned and outmanned and refuse to surrender to the Committee of Safety.
  • Oh, Crap!: Oakes's reaction after Ian tells Jamie that the Cherokee also know where Claire is, right before Chief Bird shoots him.
  • Protect This House: Jamie and Claire find themselves pinned inside the Big House, defending themselves against abduction by Richard Brown's posse. They flip the biggest furniture to create barricades and bring up their primed arsenal to be able to shoot anyone who comes too close to the house.
  • Quick Draw: Claire finds Ezra in her home, threatening her to give him her shotgun. As she hands over her shotgun, she quickly reaches for her pistol and shoots him.
  • Retroactive Precognition:
    • Brianna and Roger discuss the battles leading to The American Revolution, including Lexington and Concord, and the forthcoming Battle of Bunker Hill.
    • Roger and Brianna also discuss when would be the best time to tell Jemmy about time travel, and whether they should tell him at all.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: The Committee of Safety and townsfolk of Fraser’s Ridge come to arrest Jamie and Claire for their alleged crimes of adultery and murder, respectively.
  • Your Son All Along: After Brianna cuts Jemmy's hair because of lice, she finds a mole on his head. Roger notes that he has the same mole on his head and that the mole is genetic. Brianna and Roger make the connection that Jemmy must be his son.
