Tropes

  • The Apprentice: Malva accompanies Claire during Marsali’s pregnancy checkup. Claire teaches Malva how to find and check Marsali’s heartbeat.
  • Attending Your Own Funeral: Mrs. Crombie wakes up in the middle of her own funeral service. This allows her to see what measures have been put in place and criticize the things she doesn't like. It also gives her time for one more conversation with her family.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: After learning about the injustices Native Americans will face, Young Ian believes the Cherokee should get guns to defend themselves, going against Jamie.
  • Discriminate and Switch: Double Subverted. During a conversation about giving the Cherokee guns, Major MacDonald sneezes because he is allergic to cats. He tells Jamie and Young Ian he seems to suffer in their presence. Young Ian asks if Major MacDonald meant the Cherokee. Major MacDonald says cats, but then says some Indians, bothering Young Ian and Jamie.
  • Don't Make Me Take My Belt Off!: After being humiliated by Jamie, Tom takes out his anger on Malva and tries to beat her after he spilled milk with his bad hand. But since he cannot hold the belt, he cannot beat her.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Marsali admits to Claire that Fergus is constantly drinking because he believes he is useless and should have been there to protect Marsali and Claire.
  • Due to the Dead: The Sin-Eater eats the bread and drinks the wine left out for Hiram Crombie’s mother-in-law to absolve her of her sins.
  • Dull Surprise: Brianna shows everyone her matches, but Lizzie and Marsali are not as surprised, to Brianna's disappointment.
  • Fell Down The Stairs: When Claire notices Marsali’s bruises on her arm, Marsali quickly dismisses it, claiming she fell chasing her son. Claire doesn’t believe her, but Marsali eventually tells her Fergus grabbed her after she went after him with a stick.
  • Giving Radio to the Romans: Brianna creates matches from the white phosphorus given to her by Lord John. Roger also sees her sketches for a water wheel and plumbing.
  • If I Do Not Return: Worried about the outcome of her pregnancy, Marsali tells Claire to write a letter to her mother just in case she does not survive. Claire reassures Marsali that she will be okay.
  • Mistaken for Pregnant: Before Brianna announces her matches, Lizzie, Marsali, and Jamie believe she is pregnant. This becomes harsher in hindsight when Brianna reveals she is having trouble conceiving.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: When Hiram Crombie’s mother-in-law reawakens at her funeral, she quickly criticizes Hiram until Roger silences everyone. Roger tells her that she will die soon and should make amends with her family.
  • Premature Eulogy: Roger is in the middle of Hiram Crombie’s mother-in-law’s funeral service when she awakens. Claire mentions that she had an aortic aneurysm with internal bleeding that made her lose consciousness and feel cold to the touch.
  • Pull Yourself Together: Roger tells a drunk and self-pitying Fergus how much Marsali needs him to be there for the birth of their baby and how he needs to be the man he promised her.
  • Retroactive Precognition: Jamie asks Claire whom the Cherokee side with during the American Revolution, but Claire tells Jamie she is not knowledgeable of American history.
    • Brianna tells Young Ian about the injustices Native Americans will face in the United States.
  • Sex Is Evil: When Malva overhears Marsali and Fergus’s lovemaking, she initially believes Marsali is in pain, not understanding that women can enjoy sex. Malva erroneously concludes women who enjoy sex must be sinners or whores. Claire knows Malva learned this from her father. Therefore, Claire tells Malva that it is not wrong when people in love want to give each other pleasure.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Implied. Tom does not like being questioned or challenged by Claire. He feels emasculated and embarrassed when he needs to ask her for help.
    • Played Straight. After Claire invites Malva to observe Marsali's examination, Allan tells Claire that Malva has duties at home and cannot join Claire.
  • Wham Line:
Young Ian: I had a child.
