Tropes

  • Bearer of Bad News: Fiona shows Roger an 18th-century obituary that says Claire and Jamie die in a fire.
  • Bears Are Bad News: John Quincy Myers gets attacked by Tskili Yona, a man in bearskin exiled from the Cherokee. Claire saves his life while Jamie hunts and kills Tskili Yona.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • The Scottish Settlers in Colonial America book Brianna gave Roger. Roger finds information about Fraser's Ridge in the book and contacts the author, who gives him more information about Jamie and Claire living on Fraser's Ridge. He realizes Claire made it back and reunited with Jamie. After, Roger calls Brianna with the good news.
    • Jamie and Claire are practicing shooting. Jamie says one of the most important aspects of shooting is being able to reload calmly and quickly even as your opponent is bearing down on you. When Jamie is attacked by Tskili Yona, he fumbles and drops his gun and has to improvise, killing the man with one of the posts he'd been using to mark the boundaries of his land.
  • Deal with the Devil: Jamie formally inks a deal with Governor Tryon for 10,000 acres of land, knowing that doing so is binding him to the Crown, the losing side of the upcoming war.
  • Dirty Cop: Governor Tryon admits that his sheriffs and tax collectors are exacerbating the troubles with the Regulators, charging higher taxes than they should so they can pocket a portion of the collections.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Adawehi dreams of her death and Giduhwa tells Claire it would not be her fault.
  • Due to the Dead: Jamie returns Tskili Yona's body to his tribe to do with as they will.
  • The Exile: After Tskili Yona abused his wife, the village banished him, but he kept coming back to wreak havoc.
  • Fate Worse than Death: After Tskili Yona sexually assaulted his wife, he's exiled from his village and no one is allowed to acknowledge his existence. He eventually goes mad from the isolation and has to be put down.
  • Friendship Moment: Jamie and the native tribe come to a truce agreement after Jamie kills the tribes member that had been harassing both groups. Jamie is dubbed "Bear Killer" by their Chief.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Tskili Yona was once a respected warrior, but was exiled after he raped his wife. The Cherokee banished him with no one allowed to recognize his existence. He eventually went mad from the isolation.
  • I Owe You My Life: Invoked by John Quincy Meyers after Claire treats him for his wounds.
  • Language Barrier: Jamie wants to tell the Cherokee that he and his family mean no harm but has difficulty because he does not speak Cherokee. After he kills Tskili Yona, he earns respect from the Cherokee.
  • Meaningful Echo: Jamie repeats back Tryon's prior words: "There is the law and there is what is done."
  • Mirroring Factions: Multiple characters comment on how similar the native tribes and the highlander clans are. Unfortunately, history has promised this will include their ultimate fates.
  • I Miss Mom: Marsali confides to Claire that despite being on bad terms with Laoghaire, she misses her mom more and more the closer she gets to delivering her baby. Claire remembers feeling the same way about her own mom when she was pregnant with Faith and Brianna and worries that she's consigned Bree to the same fate whenever Bree gets around to having children.
  • Muggle with a Degree in Magic: Fiona knows about the magic of the stones and knows Claire went back to find Jamie. Her grandmother was a caller at the stones.
  • This Bear Was Framed: The trouble around Fraser's Ridge is initially believed to be the Cherokees attempting to scare them off. Then, after an animal is attacked, they believe it to be a bear. Eventually, Jamie discovers that it's a native who was exiled for sexually assaulting another tribe member. He refuses to leave the area and goes around causing problems in an attempt to force the tribe to acknowledge his presence.
  • Timmy in a Well: Rollo alerts the Fraser to any unknown presences approaching their camp in addition to alerting them when John Quincy Meyers is injured and incapacitated in the woods, saving the man's life.
  • You Can't Kill What's Already Dead: Invoked by the Cherokee. As they have declared Tskili Yona dead to them, they can't acknowledge his existence in any way, not even to defend their village against his attacks. They are gratefully when Jamie kills him for them, considering a mercy kill of a body that was walking around without its soul.
