In Paris, Jamie struggles with the memories of his imprisonment as he and Claire attempt to formulate a plan to derail the Uprising. Meanwhile, after Claire and Jamie are invited into Versailles and King Louis' court, Claire encounters an old acquaintance, leading to a disturbing discovery.

Tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Signeur Duverney is not traditionally handsome, but he considers himself a real lady's man and has designs on Claire despite her visible disinterest and the fact that she's married.
  • Apothecary Alligator: Seen hanging from the ceiling in Master Raymond's apothecary
  • Armor-Piercing Question: After Prince Charles' passionate speech about how it is God's will that the Scottish rise up and return the Stuart family to the throne, their destinies entwined, Murtagh asks if Charles has ever even been to Scotland. Charles is forced to admit that he's never visited any of the people he believes crucial to his return to reign.
  • Blaming the Victim: After having to pull the lecherous Monsieur Duvernay off of Claire, Jamie offhandedly blames Claire for wearing her low cut dres
  • Brown Note: Played for Laughs. As Murtagh points out: The French may be the only people in the world to have their king relieve himself in public, with twenty-odd men attending him. The fact that he is constipated makes the whole thing hilarious.
  • Brutal Honesty: Prince Charles asks if the Scottish are ready to rise up and restore his family to the throne, very plainly expecting to hear an answer to the affirmative. Instead, Jamie and Murtagh are very frank, saying that the Scottish are not in a position to truly challenge the British control of the throne, being scattered, disorganized, underfunded, and bickering amongst themselves.
  • The Bus Came Back: The Duke of Sandringham was last seen headed to England to deliver Jamie's letter of petition. He is now back in France and knee deep in the Jacobite Rebellion, along with Alex Randal, Captain Randall's younger brother.
  • Catchphrase: Prince Charles Stuart is fond of saying "Mark me."
  • Culture Clash: A case of beauty standards changing throughout time. Jamie thinks it's weird that Claire willingly chose to wax herself hairless, particularly downstairs, referring to her normal body hair as a "lovely forest:. But he's attracted to her regardless of what she does.
  • The Chosen Wannabe: Prince Charles repeatedly argues that it is God's will for his family to sit on the throne. History, however, bears out that the Stuart family will never return to the throne of England.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Claire shows small signs of this when coming face-to-face with a woman Jamie had been attracted to years ago, and orders Murtagh to follow Annalise and Jamie when the former leads Jamie to meet King Louis.
  • Decadent Court: The French Versailles court, of course.
  • Den of Iniquity: Maison Elise. The licentious brothel is a popular gathering space for the elite who enjoy the view while planning their next move.
  • Divine Right of Kings: Heavily invoked by Prince Charles.
  • Emissary from the Divine: Prince Charles gives a passionate speech declaring it be God's demand that his Catholic family be restored to the English throne.
  • Erotic Dream: Jamie dreams of having sex with Claire only for her to morph into Black Jack Randall. Jamie brutally stabs the man to death, only for his eyes to pop back open, signaling that he is unkillable.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Claire is clearly taken aback to see Jamie behaving affectionately towards another woman. She even asks Murtagh to accompany Jamie and Annalise in walking to the King's chambers, despite it being made clear that Annalise can only go as far as the door, due to royal protocol. Particularly funny since Claire has another husband.
  • I Am Big Boned: Murtagh jokingly refers to Rupert as "Lard Bucket". Jamie laughs and says that Rupert is large but would probably call it muscle.
  • Impossibly-Low Neckline: Jamie jokes that Claire's dress is so low-cut he can see her bottom rib and her navel. In reality, it is cut to about mid-sternum, showing the lower curve of her breast from certain angles.
  • Keeper of Forbidden Knowledge: Master Raymond dabbles in the Black Arts and has a vast knowledge of potions.
  • The Kingslayer: Invoked and averted. Murtagh proposes killing Prince Charlie to stop the rebellion. Jamie points out that killing Prince Charles does not guarantee that King James won't pick up the mantle of the rebellion and that it might make it worse by making the Prince a martyr that the Jacobites can rally around.
  • Lady in Red: Claire wears a stunning red dress to Versailles, one that she helped design herself.
  • Lethally Stupid: Jamie, Murtagh, and Claire all agree that Prince Charles is an idiot, but he's influential enough to be a dangerous idiot who will get a lot of people killed in the name of his cause.
  • Lecherous Licking: Signeur Duverney asked to worship at Claire's feet and then proceeds to try to do so.
  • New Old Flame: Annalise, who has never been mentioned before, bounds up to Jamie, kissing him and calling him her "little savage." While it is established in cannon that Jamie was a virgin when he married Claire, it is clear Annalise and Jamie have a romantic history.
  • Noodle Incident: At some point, Jamie dueled another man over Annalise's affections.
  • Oh, Crap!: Claire's reaction when she learns Randall is still alive.
  • Painful Body Waxing: Louise de la Tour enjoys having a completely smooth body, but yells, pouts, and even smacks her wax specialist with each strip of hair removed, calling him a vile monster and a torturer.
  • Past Experience Nightmare: Jamie is plagued by nightmares that are a mixture of being assaulted, taking revenge against Randall, and having sex with Claire only for her to turn into Randall at the last moment.
  • Poverty Food: King Louis refers to porridge as "peasant food." Jamie does not take it as an insult, despite it being very popular among the Scottish.
  • The Reveal: Randall survived the stampede in Wentworth Prison.
  • Shrinking Violet: Mary Hawkins is painfully shy and timid, usually drawing in on herself, eyes averted, and speaking in a whisper with a stutter.
  • Spontaneous Crowd Formation: As dueling has been outlawed by royal decree in France, Jamie and Murtaugh's sword practice draws quite a crowd of curious onlookers.
  • Trauma Button: While making out with Claire, the sensations trigger Jamie's memories of being sexually assaulted by Jack Randall, causing him to freeze up, unable to continue.
