Recap / Our Cartoon President S1E9 "Church and State"

Go To

Trump decides to pander to his Evangelical base and markets himself as a hardcore Christian. Meanwhile, Don Jr. and Eric try to make Jared Kushner more like a Trump.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Artistic License – Law: The First Amendment forbids the government from passing any laws with an openly religious agenda, so the various Theocratic laws he passes to pander to Evangelical voters wouldn't have been able to pass if this was Real Life. Not that Christian-Nationalist politicians haven't tried.
  • Cargo Cult: The closest thing to God Trump actually believes in is a golf-cart. Specifically an orange talking golf-cart with his hair and voice.
  • Easter Episode: The episode is set around Easter.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: Mike Pence convinces Trump to pass executive orders that coincide with his far-right Christian values, including: no federal funds are given to Planned Parenthood, bakeries are allowed to deny service to any man wearing torn-jeans, people who make eye-contact with cameras at ATM machines will be investigated under suspicion of prostitution, imposing prayer requirement for Medicaid recipients and women pumping their own gas, eating meals out of order and divorce will be punishable by death.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Jared breaks it off with Don and Eric, Don accuses Jared of being what basically describes himself.
Don Jr.: Jared's exactly who we always suspected he was; a spoiled child of a disgraced real-estate mogul with a total lack of self-awareness.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction:
    • Ted Cruz claims that prayer is an intimate act isn't something to showboat over. Cut to him babbling loudly to a megachurch crowd.
    • Don Jr. insists that his dad never spending time with him when he was a kid did nothing to him psychologically. He then angrily yells at the bartender for taking too long bringing them shots before sobbing hysterically for a hug.
