Recap / Orphan Black S 04 E 07 The Antisocialism Of Sex

Go To

Sarah regresses to old habits while struggling to cope with the consequences of her decisions — reconnecting with Beth on a dark night of the soul. Back at the lab, Cosima, haunted by vicious memories and news of Delphine, attempts a dangerous Hail Mary to find a cure. At the Hendrixes, Alison is more determined than ever to create normalcy for her kids. As she forges ahead with a birthday party, Donnie is caught in the Neolution crosshairs.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Awful Truth/Internal Reveal: Rachel breaks the news of the clone disease to Charlotte.
  • The Cameo: The musician at the bar is Peaches.
  • Contrived Coincidence: The bar Sarah goes to happened to be one that Dizzy frequents and they bumped into each other.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Sarah goes on a wild night of alcohol, drugs, and sex after being kicked out by Siobhan.
  • The Empath: Kira somehow knows that Sarah is "following Beth".
  • Evil Gloating: Evie's call to Susan and Rachel is mostly just to let them know how unimportant they are now.
  • Hallucinations:
    • Sarah has recurring visions of Beth as the night goes on.
    • Rachel has a hallucination of a swan.
  • Heroic BSoD: Much of the episode deals Clone Club trying to cope with Kendall's death.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Felix manages to get to Sarah before she throws herself over a 40 foot high bridge.
  • It's All My Fault:
    • Cosima blames herself for what happened in the previous episode.
    • According to Kira, Sarah also feels this way.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Is Sarah just hallucinating Beth, or is she connecting to her through the psychic/empathic link the clones (and Kira) share? It's worth noting that Sarah starts to see Beth before she's drunk and high, and Kira seems to sense Beth through Sarah.
  • Mood Whiplash: Gemma's sleepover birthday party is interrupted when the police come to arrest Donnie.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Art beats up Duko for his role in Beth and Kendall's deaths, but Duko merely continues to blackmail him.
  • Oh, Crap!: Rachel's reaction when her mother tells her that the original has been destroyed, and her hope for a cure as well.
  • The Reveal: Krystal saw someone carry Delphine away, and she was still alive when they did.
  • Revenge: The shot of Siobhan getting her shotgun ready...
  • Self-Surgery: Cosima tries to implant Sarah's bot into her own cheek, believing that either she'll get better or her death will give the others a better understanding of the disease. According to Scott, she's at the end of rope because of guilt over Kendall and Delphine. Felix manages to talk her out of it by giving her hope that Delphine may still be alive.
  • Sex for Solace: Sarah, during her drunken partying, has a three-way with a couple. Later she tries to seduce Dizzy, but he's too concerned with figuring out the truth about the bots.
  • Shame If Something Happened: Duko, after getting Donnie arrested, reminds Alison how tragic Kendall's demise was.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance:
    • The music is remarkably bright and cheery as cops burst into the Hendrix home to arrest Donnie, knocking presents and tables over and utterly terrifying the children.
    • Peaches' live performance as well, arguably. May also serve as an example of Hilarious in Hindsight since one of the songs she performs ("Boys Wanna Be Her") is also the Real Song Theme Tune for Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, which may be a bit distracting to viewers familiar with both shows (Full Frontal actually began airing before this episode's original air date, so it's arguably more of a case of Hilarious in Parallel, but it's likely that the Orphan Black episode began production long before that).
  • Stepford Smiler:
    • Alison desperately tries to seem normal as she throws her daughter a birthday party, despite still mourning Kendall. Donnie tries to get her be honest about her feelings.
    • Ira just got out of the hospital for attempted suicide, but he's more than happy to pretend it didn't even happen.
  • Villainous BSoD: Susan Duncan suffers one after being usurped by Evie Cho. She just gives up, much to Rachel's chagrin.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Siobhan calls Sarah out for her role in Kendall's death and refuses to let her leave with Kira. They do reconcile by the end.
Siobhan: You came to me an orphan. That's all you'll ever be.
    • Later Felix calls Siobhan out for letting Sarah leave.
