Sarah’s day off to reconnect with Kira quickly turns into a sleuthing mission aimed squarely at discrediting Felix’s new ties. Cosima steps up with Donnie to further investigate the Neolutionist fertility research center. While Donnie bumps into an all too familiar face, Cosima makes a shocking discovery that leads her into a dangerous encounter.
This episode contains examples of:
- Bait-and-Switch: Krystal starts sharing some of her research with Donnie and starts talking about the Dyad doing human enhancement. Namely...a woman allegedly growing teeth on her eyelids.
- Body Horror: While posing as a nurse, Cosima witnesses the birth of a hideously deformed BrightBorn baby.
- Designer Babies: The fundamental purpose of BrightBorn is create "perfect" babies that are free of any defects.
- The Empath: Kira claims to know all the feelings of the Leda clones, even the ones she doesn't know.
- Foreshadowing: Krystal coos over a BrightBorn baby's adorable dimples. Later Cosima mentions how unusual it is that all BrightBorn babies have dimples and brings up germ-line editing.
- Groin Attack: When Donnie slips up by mentioning Delphine's name, Krystal ends up doing this to him before giving an elbow to the back of his head.
- I Never Told You My Name: Donnie freaks Krystal out by knowing Delphine's name and hers when she hadn't told him.
- Innocently Insensitive: Donnie has yet to fully master being PC around LGBT individuals.Donnie: I'm gaynote , but I'm not like, super gay, so maybe don't play the lesbian angle too much?Cosima: (Beat) I'm just gonna let that one slide.
- Internal Reveal: Art and Sarah find out about Alison and Donnie's drug operations from last season.
- Mistaken Identity: Krystal goes undercover at BrightBorn but Evie Cho thinks she's Sarah Manning. Susan Duncan spots Cosima and thinks that's who Evie is talking about. When Susan dispatches security to capture Cosima the guard winds up nabbing Krystal instead.
- Mood Whip Lash: The tense scene when Felix finds out that Sarah's having a DNA test done without his permission is immediately followed by hijinks with Donnie and Krystal.
- Oh, Crap!:
- When Donnie sees Krystal at BrightBorn.
- Art manages to keep his cool while Duko is subtly threatening him to stay away from the Hendrixes, but when he relays the conversation to Sarah, he's quite noticeably freaked out.
- Krystal freaks out when she sees Ira, believing him to be one of her attackers from season 3.
- Parental Incest: While they're not biological related, Susan created and raised Ira, so their relationship falls squarely into this.
- The Reveal:
- BrightBorn doesn't just make Designer Babies, they experiment on embryos.
- Susan and Ira are lovers.
- Took a Level in Badass: Since getting kidnapped, Krystal has been taking self-defense class and manages to knock her instructor down twice in a row. She also dispatches Donnie when he slips up about Delphine.
- We Can Rule Together: Susan Duncan offers to Cosima, if she'll give up Kendall Malone.
- What the Hell, Hero?:
- Sarah and Siobhan are angry that Felix brought Adele to their hideout.
- Felix is disgusted to learn that Sarah had Scott run a DNA test to see if Adele was really his sister without telling him.
- Both Art and Sarah get pissed when they're caught up on the Hendrix drug dealing business of last year.
