Go To

The episode in which Raquel gives birth to Damien. First broadcast 3 February 1991.

With Raquel in the late stages of pregnancy, Rodney and Albert speculate whether the baby will be a boy or a girl, while the Nag's Head is running a sweepstake to guess the name. Del has bought a box of wigs from Mustapha from the Bangladeshi butcher's shop, but he's less than happy when he realises they're men's wigs. Things are still going badly between Rodney and Cassandra.

Del tells Rodney that he ran into Stephen, Cassandra's former boss at the bank, and saw that he was wearing a clip-on ponytail. Rodney and Albert help Del and Raquel come up with a name for the baby. After plenty of names are suggested, Rodney sarcastically suggests Damien and is bewildered to find that Del and Raquel love it. Rodney desperately tries to get them to change their minds and name the baby Derek, leading to their baby's full name — Damien Derek Trotter. Albert points out that would make his initials DDT, but Del and Raquel are content, with Del remarking that "there'll be no flies on him."

Rodney, secretly sporting a clip-on ponytail, goes to see Cassandra. Upon hearing that she thinks the new fad for men sporting clip-on ponytails is embarrassing, he furtively removes it. Cassandra says that she spoke to her solicitor, who suggested that she and Rodney try to repair their marriage by raising a pet. When they can't agree on what sort of pet, Rodney prepares to leave — but then, Cassandra screams upon seeing the discarded clip-on ponytail, believing it to be a rat. Rodney seizes the opportunity to "save the day" and eventually gets rid of it, impressing Cassandra.

Meanwhile, back at Nelson Mandela House, Del discovers that the men's wigs are falling apart, and Raquel goes into labour.

At the hospital, Del and Raquel wait in the delivery room, while Rodney and Albert wait in the corridor. Raquel finally gives birth to a boy. Albert and Rodney enter the delivery room to meet Del and Raquel's newborn son, Damien Derek Trotter. Rodney reacts terrified as Damien looks at him. Del then takes his son over to a window, and looks outside into the night sky. Del tells the spirit of his late mother Joan about her first grandchild, and tells Damien that he has a loving family, and that this time next year, they will be millionaires.

Tropes:

  • Call-Back: Del says he ran into Stephen, Cassandra's yuppy boss who Rodney punched in "The Jolly Boys' Outing".
  • Continuity Snarl: After Damien is born, Del introduces the baby to Albert, telling him: "That's your Great-Uncle Albert". Yet Albert, being the brother of Del's grandfather, is actually Damien's great-great-uncle. Del could be forgiven for this, though, since he's overcome with emotion as a result of having just become a father.
  • Dodgy Toupee: Del's trying to flog some wigs, which are of such poor quality that they're falling apart. Rodney's clip-on pony-tail also counts.
  • Eek, a Mouse!!: After Rodney tries to get rid of his clip-on ponytail by throwing it on the floor, Cassandra mistakes it for a rat. Rodney manages to get back in her good graces by getting rid of it.
  • Ominous Latin Chanting: When Rodney meets his nephew for the first time, "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana is played. This will become something of a Running Gag.
  • Running Gag: Oh, Trigger. You'd think that the whole Accidental Misnaming thing would've run out of steam after ten years, but no. It even gets worked into the speculation about what the baby's going to be called.
Trigger: If it's a boy, they're naming it Rodney. After Dave.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Neither Del nor Raquel pick up on Rodney's sarcasm when he suggests "Damien" as a name for their baby. In fact, they like it.
  • Screaming Birth: Mostly averted. Despite having a detailed birth episode for the arrival of Damien, the portrayal is pretty realistic — Raquel yells a few times but doesn't scream, and it's made very clear that they're in the hospital for several hours before he arrives.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is reference to Three Men and a Baby.
  • Shout-Out: Damien is named for the Creepy Child from The Omen, the name having been sarcastically suggested by Rodney and taken seriously by Del and Raquel.
  • Three-Month-Old Newborn: Averted. Since the final scenes were filmed in an actual hospital, one of the runners just went down to the maternity ward and asked the new mothers if any of them would like their baby to be a TV star. One of them said yes.
