What you got, a Wendy house?

The episode in which Rodney tries to go it alone. First broadcast 17 November 1983.

Rodney takes the bold decision to leave Trotters' Independent Traders to go it alone ... with Mickey Pearce. But, without Del's financial assistance, he soon begins to struggle and needs a miracle to survive. However, when the chance comes to use all his available money to buy something potentially valuable at an auction — which might change his fortunes and prove Del wrong — he has a big decision to make.

Tropes:

  • Batman Gambit: At the auction, Del advises Rodney not to buy a particular item for sale as it's "a lot of old rubbish". Rodney and Mickey immediately suspect that Del just doesn't want them to bid for something he is interested in, so they buy it. Turns out that not only was it really just some worthless broken lawnmower engines, but they belonged to Del in the first place after he drunkenly bought them off Alfie Flowers.
  • I Warned You: Del warns the new partnership of Rodney and Mickey Pearce not to buy an auction lot which he describes as "old scrap metal". The duo assume he's playing a mind game and buy it, only to discover that the lot is just a pile of broken lawnmower engines. When Rodney angrily demands to know why Del didn't warn him, Del reminds him that he did.
  • Noodle Incident: Grandad doesn't trust Mickey Pearce...
Grandad: You want to watch that young Pearcey, he's a bit too fly for my liking. He'd rob his own grandmother, he would.
Rodney: Oh don't be stupid, Grandad. [softly] That was never proved.
