Contains examples of the following tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Peyton ends things with Lucas to try to preserve her friendship with Brooke, only to find out that Brooke already knows the truth.
  • Downer Ending: Peyton breaks things off with Lucas, not wanting to hurt Brooke any further; however, after Peyton returns home, Brooke confronts her with the knowledge of Lucas and Peyton's betrayal and ends her friendship with Peyton.
  • Dramatic Irony: Peyton breaks things off with Lucas because she wants to preserve her friendship with Brooke, completely unaware that Brooke has already learnt the truth about Lucas and Peyton's affair.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Lucas doesn't waste any time in breaking up with Brooke, doing so almost immediately after he returns home from the hospital.
    • Dan blackmails Nathan into choosing to live with him over Deb by promising a quick divorce if Nathan does, but threatening to drag Deb’s reputation through the mud if Nathan goes with his mother.
  • The Reveal: Haley not only has dreams of becoming a singer, but is actually a talented musician.
  • Titled After the Song: The episode title is taken from the song "Suddenly Everything Has Changed" by The Flaming Lips.
