Written by: Laura Jacqmin

Directed by: Tim Southam

The gang attempts to lay low from the marines at the sea bound restaurant Baratie, only for Luffy to end up paying off his tab as a chore boy. Meanwhile, Garp recruits the Warlord Dracule Mihawk to bring his grandson in.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Context Change:
    • Luffy orders expensive meals with money he doesn't have, before Zeff drags him to the kitchen. Originally he had to Work Off the Debt because he destroyed Baratie's roof with a cannonball.
    • In the manga Mihawk accidentally stumbles upon Krieg and destroys all but one ship which he follows For the Evulz. In the adaptation Krieg doesn't survive his first encounter, so Mihawk is sent to Baratie to capture Luffy by Garp per his Warlord obligations.
  • Alcohol-Induced Stupidity: Too much of a deceptively strong drink causes Usopp to introduce Mihawk to his crew.
  • Call-Back: In Episode 2 Koby symbolically remarks that his uniform is too big for him. Here Garp comments that his uniform is starting to fit.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: When Garp calls Mihawk, he catches him in the middle of fighting the Krieg Pirates, who pose so little threat to him he crushes them while holding a conversation with Garp.
  • The Coats Are Off: Garp tosses his coat into Koby's arms as he prepares to throw a cannonball, with his hands, at the Going Merry.
  • Conscience Makes You Go Back: When Nami packs her bags and hitches a ride, prepared to wash her hands of her newfound friends and their insanity, only to return in time for Zoro's duel.
  • Couch Gag: Zeff's jolly roger replaces Luffy's in the title shot.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Zoro's first duel with Mihawk is as one-sided as it was in the manga.
  • Death Glare: Nami gives two to the rest of the crew when they start to mock her after Sanji tried to flirt with her. Downplayed after the second one, though, where she's also visibly suppressing a smile.
  • Demoted to Extra: Don Krieg doesn't survive his initial battle with Mihawk in this adaptation, and therefore never attacks the Baratie. As a consequence, Gin's role is severely reduced as well.
  • Downer Ending: The episode ends with Zoro, severely wounded after being curb-stomped by Mihawk, passing out from blood loss.
  • Face Death with Dignity:
    • After his last-ditch attempt to bring down Mihawk fails, Don Krieg just chuckles and grits his teeth as Mihawk goes in for the kill.
    • Well, he wasn't killed, but true to the battle in the manga and anime, Zoro faces Mihawk after their final strike destroys two of his swords and he realizes he's been beaten.
Mihawk: You are defeated. Why do you persist?
Zoro: Wounds on the back are a swordsman's greatest shame.
      Mihawk: Magnificent.
  • Foreshadowing: When Mihawk first sees Luffy, he remarks on his hat, providing an early hint at his association with Shanks.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • During Krieg's "fight" with Mihawk, one can notice a dead Pearl sprawled across the sand in the background.
    • Several of the paintings around the restaurant showcase places that haven't appeared in the show.
  • Holding Hands: A platonic version. Nami clutches Usopp's hand as they all brace themselves for Mihawk to cut Zoro down.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Nami's response to Luffy being dragged away by Zeff to work off his debt. Zoro happily agrees.
  • Life Isn't Fair: The Hard Truth Aesop Garp gives to Koby when the latter is upset about the whole idea of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and different rules applying to different pirates and people for the Marines. He fully agrees that the world isn't fair, but tells Koby that they have to live with that and sometimes make difficult choices for the sake of maintaining peace and avoiding total anarchy.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Sanji offers both arguing Lt. Fullbody and a pirate a glass of Itelzbulger Stein, the same wine that Fullbody had requested in advance that he be served in the manga.
    • That pirate Fullbody is arguing with has the exact same design as Galley, the main antagonist from the prototype version of One Piece called Romance Dawn.
    • Luffy tries to pay the Baratie's bill with his "Treasure Tab", something that he did a lot of in his childhood in the manga.
    • Since they happen to be nearby, Koby suggests contacting the 77th Branch of the Marines to help locate Luffy. In the manga, this is the same unit lead by Commodore Purinpurin that was effortlessly destroyed by Arlong's crew when they tried to save Cocoyashi village.
  • The Nose Knows: Thanks to his love of food, Luffy is able to smell food from the Baratie—more specifically, is able to tell that it's butter, soy sauce, and meat—long before his crewmates do.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Seconds before killing Krieg, Mihawk says, "Such a disappointing final gambit."
  • So Proud of You: Downplayed, especially as Luffy doesn't hear it himself, but Garp's uproarious cheer and "Not bad, boy" after Luffy bounces one of his chucked cannonballs back at the Marine ship clearly shows Garp is, if nothing else, proud of his grandson's strength.
  • Stalker Shot: After Garp gets Mihawk to agree to go capture Luffy and Garp tells him where to go, the camera pans over outside Garp's office door to reveal Koby has been eavesdropping on Garp's conversation with Mihawk the whole time.
  • Stock Scream: The Wilhelm Scream can be heard after Mihawk cuts Don Krieg's ship in half.
