And you thought Odd Todd was a nightmare? These two are a close second.
Xs and Os

Airdates: October 17, 2017 note , October 23, 2016 note

A special task force arrives to shut down the Odd Squad headquarters.

Tropes:

  • Affection-Hating Kid: Befitting their complete Lack of Empathy, both Xavier and Xena despise kissing and hugging. Xavier in particular also despises handshakes.
  • The Alcoholic: Deconstructed. This episode reveals that if Ms. O doesn't drink juice on the daily, she will go into severe withdrawal, much like what alcoholics in Real Life can go through if they don't drink alcohol on a regular basis. The symptoms she does show are reminiscent of real withdrawal symptoms, and once Olympia gives her a juice box, she returns to normal.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Olympia and Ms. O give out these when Xena proclaims that she and Xavier are shutting down Headquarters.
  • Bland-Name Product: One of the things in Olympia's welcome basket is a box of "Shmumberfits" crackers, which is a reference to the Ritz brand of crackers.
  • Bullying the Disabled: Xavier is willing to go so far as to take Olympia's glasses with him when Precinct 13579 gets shut down. (And keep in mind: Anna Cathcart wears glasses in real life — meaning that if Xavier took Olympia's glasses, she'd be left Blind Without 'Em.)
  • Catchphrase Interruptus: When Olympia begins to cheerfully say her "Happy to help, have a great day" Catchphrase, Otis stops her and tells her not to say it before leaving. However, Olympia ultimately can't resist and comes back to recite the Catchphrase again, which ropes her into helping Christine move another item of hers.
  • Cheerful Child: Just listen to how excited Olympia sounds when she spots Xavier and Xena. It's absolutely adorable.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Nicole/Rebecca/Christine, as usual. When Olympia tells her in dead earnest that she and Otis aren't helping her load her fridge onto the moving truck, the comment flies right over her head.
  • Condescending Compassion: Xavier tells Olympia that he likes her glasses right before he sticks a sticky note with an "X" on it on the side of them (with the notes indicating things he and Xena want to take for themselves).
    • After Olympia and Otis determine that they still need to save $50 to stay under budget, Xavier and Xena return from their lunch break and hand a job application to Olympia and Otis for Lobsters To Go, the restaurant they just ate at...because they're gonna need to find another job when the precinct shuts down for good in 5 minutes.
  • Continuity Nod: Rebecca- er, Christine returns once again, after having last been seen in "Three's Company". This time around, she attempts to trick Olympia and Otis into helping her load her things into a moving truck.
    • Olympia recognizes Olo from her interview in the OddTube episode "Meet Agent Olo".
    • A Hopinbob is among the creatures that break out of the Creature Room, as well as the creature from the previous episode.
  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": While it's not due to aging and not Played for Laughs, Ocean rushes out of the Creature Room clutching his back and crying for help. When Otis asks him what's happening, Ocean tells him that he is suffering from back pain due to not being able to in his hammock.
  • Cutting Corners: Deconstructed. The conflict of the episode is that Precinct 13579 is spending $100 more than their allotted budget, and as a result, agents in various departments are forced to cut back. However, as a result of the cutbacks, numerous agents begin to suffer both physically and mentally — Ocean's back begins to hurt due to the loss of his hammock, Oona is exhausted and cannot make gadgets due to generating electricity for the lab using a pedal bike, and Ms. O suffers from severe withdrawal due to cutting back on juice, becoming what is best described as a Technically-Living Zombie. To top it all off, Headquarters itself begins to fall to shambles due to Olo, the head agent of the Glue department, cutting back on glue, which she uses to keep it secure. Eventually it's revealed that Xavier and Xena are the root cause of the overspending, splurging on various expensive things like massage chairs and golden pens, and once Xavier agrees to sell a golden pen cap worth $100, everything goes back to normal. This is something that carries into future episodes such as "Negative Town", where a holographic Ms. O tells Olympia and Otis that Odd Squad's "gotta spend the money, or we lose it".
  • Determinator: Averted for Xavier and Xena, as they believe that the agents' efforts to save money will be all for naught, and the precinct will get shut down. Of course, being that Status Quo Is God, this doesn't turn out to be the case.
  • Diegetic Switch: The rock song instrumental that Oona is listening to through her headphones shifts to being part of the BGM during an Idiosyncratic Wipe after Ms. O yells her name.
  • Disability as an Excuse for Jerkassery: Xena is disabled and uses a wheelchair to get around. She's also a complete asshole to every agent of Precinct 13579, along with Xavier, who is not disabled. She doesn't milk her disability for any sympathy, but none of the agents speak up against her, likely due in part to her high status in Odd Squad hierarchy and Odd Squad having equality and diversity as its modus operandis.
  • Double Take: As Olympia is walking through the bullpen, she passes by the X's, who are marking things in the bullpen with sticky notes that have X's drawn on them. She walks offscreen, but turns around and comes back moments later before asking them what they're doing.
  • Duct Tape for Everything: Not tape, but glue — Olo keeps the entirety of Headquarters secure with it. And it's not superglue either; it's school glue. To put this in perspective: a majority of Odd Squad Headquarters, if not all of them, are Elaborate Underground Bases with (at most) two floors and tons of rooms, and are made out of solid structures which would need nails and such other tools to keep sturdy.
  • Fictional Greetings and Farewells: Olo likes to greet others by saying her name, as a Pun on "hello".
  • Fighting Back Is Wrong: Implied. While Olympia, Otis and Ms. O are all higher in rank than the X's, the only reason they can't fight back against them is because they were sent by the Big O himself, and defying them would likely have just as grave consequences as defying the Big O. As a result, Ms. O and the others are forced to follow whatever they order.
  • Foil: The Task Force as a department is a direct parallel to the Security department, right down to having near-identical symbols (the keyhole in the Task Force department's symbol is flipped upside down, and the symbol itself is colored black). While the Task Force enforces rules and is a special division of Odd Squad created by the Big O himself, with agents that are more or less serious and (at times) malicious, the Security department is a little more laid-back and far more kinder, while still being dedicated to their job. note
  • Foreshadowing: At the end of the episode, Xavier and Xena question Otis about suspicious activity that has been reported, such as villain break-ins and missing gadgets. While he denies any sort of involvement, the two Task Force agents begin to grow suspicious, and decide to stay in Precinct 13579 until the cause is determined.
    • The various items the X's use/buy — golden pens, lobster dinners, etc. — serves as foreshadowing for whom the real culprit is in overspending.
  • Glasses Curiosity: A bit of a variant — while Xavier doesn't take Olympia's glasses directly off of her face, he does mark it with a sticky note marked with an "X", as a way of saying that when Precinct 13579 gets shut down, he'll take Olympia's glasses with him.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: A few of the things that the X's overspend on are golden pens and gold-colored furniture.
    • The X's themselves also have gold-colored buttons in the shape of X's as well as golden ties as part of their outfits.
  • Hair Reboot: Olympia hands Ms. O — who has Messy Hair as part of her withdrawal symptoms — a juice box to drink in order to restore her strength. The camera cuts to her mouth as she drinks it, then the Director's hair returns to its normal Prim and Proper Bun in the very next shot.
  • Hammerspace: Yes, we know this ability is Odd Squad agents' bread and butter. Olympia, however, displays a bit of a variant — she pulls her welcome basket from offscreen as though it were on the ground, not from behind her back.
    • The usual ability is showcased when Olympia conjures up a juice box for the disoriented Ms. O to drink.
  • Hamster-Wheel Power: Oona uses a stationary bike to generate electricity for the lab in order to save money. It works for a time, but as a consequence, she is unable to build and repair gadgets for Investigation agents to use.
  • Hate Sink: Xavier and Xena. And how! Both of them are Jerkasses who are absolutely not afraid to stomp (or in Xena's case, roll) all over the agents of Precinct 13579 for their failure to follow the rule of sticking to a budget. Ms. O is going through the G-rated version of alcohol withdrawal because she's forced to cut back on juice? They don't care. Investigation agents are defenseless because Oona can't repair gadgets due to having to generate her own electricity for the lab? They don't care. Headquarters begins falling to ruins due to the budget cuts they imposed? They don't care. It is nigh impossible to find even one nice thing about these two Task Force agents. To make matters worse, the Karma Houdini trope is in full effect for them, and they never get their comeuppance at all in this episode specifically.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Olympia sees the Task Force agents for the first time, and immediately views them as a pair of new neighbors, deciding to give them a welcome basket as a means of introducing herself to them. Once she finds out who they really are, she is incredibly quick to change her tune.
Otis: [to Olympia] You should take back your olive oil.
[Olympia gives a small chuckle and shoots a concerned glance at the X's before leaving the room]
  • I Can't Hear You: While generating electricity for the lab, Oona listens to music. However, the music (combined with the fascination of the light that sits on her stationary bike) is loud enough for her to ignore Ms. O when she asks her for a juice-making gadget.
Ms. O: [out of breath] Oona! I cancelled my juice delivery! Do you have a gadget that makes juice?
    [Oona ignores her]
    Ms. O: OONAAAAA!!
  • Idiot Ball: Ocean grabs ahold of it briefly when he suggests that he stop buying creature food to save money. When Olympia asks what the creatures will eat, he calmly responds that they'll eat the agents.
  • I Have Many Names: The Cold Open client. She went from having the name Nicole, to being called Rebecca, to having her name be Christine.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: When Olympia suggests that Precinct 13579 only spend the amount they're supposed to and not the extra $100 that they've gone over by, Xavier accepts and states that he and Xena are reasonable people...before he gives Olympia, Otis and Ms. O until the end of the day to fix the issue lest their precinct be shut down.
    • Ms. O yells at Olympia that she can go without juice for a day. As it turns out, true to her alcoholic ways, she absolutely cannot go without juice for a day.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When Olympia and Otis manage to achieve their goal of saving $100, Olympia remarks that nothing seems to have changed in Headquarters. Cue Ocean rushing out of the Creature Room in pain from his sore back, with creatures making their escape to boot, followed by a host of other issues that crop up.
  • Jaw Drop: Olympia's reaction to Xavier offering to sell one of his golden pen caps that's worth $100.
  • Karma Houdini: Neither Xavier nor Xena suffer any sort of karma for their bad actions.
  • Lawman Baton: Owen has one that he replaces monthly, in order to keep it "fresh".
Owen: If I'm not twirlin' a fresh baton, who's gonna take me seriously?
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: Olympia suggests that she and Otis split up and ask various departments to cut back on things to save money.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Xavier and Xena have been working at Precinct 13579 for 3 months. While Olympia and Otis are unaware of them, Ms. O knows them well, as the Big O sent them to her precinct personally.
  • Messy Hair: One of the signs of Ms. O's juice withdrawal is her messed-up hair. When she visits Oona to see if she has a gadget that makes juice, she is shown with a few strands loose from her usual Prim and Proper Bun. By the time Headquarters begins to collapse, the bun comes undone entirely.
  • Mirthless Laughter: A common Running Gag with Xavier and Xena involves them laughing in a stiff manner at things that aren't meant to be funny, taking the shape of HA HA HA—No.
  • New Rules as the Plot Demands: While Odd Squad as an organization doesn't have a firm set of rules, this episode reveals that there are rules in place, with one of them being that precincts must stick to a budget that is replenished monthly. However, we don't hear any other rules aside from that one.
  • invoked No Budget: An in-universe example. Odd Squad precincts have set budgets, a certain amount of money they are allowed to spend every month. Precinct 13579 happens to be over their budget, leading the X's to begin to shut down the precinct before Olympia comes up with the idea to cut corners in order to save money. It's implied that most of the money in the budget is allocated to all departments for them to spend on parts and other things they need.
  • No Hugging, No Kissing: While this is the show's standard policy (for the kissing part, anyway), Xena manages to invoke it by telling Olympia, who had made a remark on how "Xs and Os" sounds like hugs and kisses, that "there will be no kisses or hugs!"
  • Not Like Other Guys: As soon as Otis leaves the Task Force Room at the end of the episode, Xavier agrees with Xena that something is off with him, noticing that he's "not like the other agents." Xena then responds with "or like us", causing the two to perform their trademark Mirthless Laughter before going back to work.
  • Not So Above It All: As Otis is confronting the X's, Xena is shown looking concerned as the Task Force office begins to shake (it doesn't last long, though). Xavier, on the other hand, is completely unfazed.
  • Odd Name Out: Whereas every Odd Squad agent's name begins with an O, those in the Task Force have their names begin with an X. When Otis asks Xavier and Xena about it, Xena tells him that the Task Force works alongside the Odd Squad agents, which is why their names are different.
    • Similarly, neither Xavier nor Xena are referred to with the "Agent" title that most every employee of Odd Squad has, which implies that those in the Task Force aren't referred to as "Agent [O name]", but rather, they are referred to by just their name.
  • Race Against the Clock: Otis and Olympia have to save $100 for the entire precinct by day's end.
  • Red Alert: Headquarters falling to ruins is accompanied by a repeatedly blaring klaxon noise and a pulsing red light illuminating the bullpen.
  • Rules Lawyer: Making sure Odd Squad agents are following rules appears to be the Task Force department's job, and Xavier and Xena are examples of obstructive Rules Lawyers.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: While Xavier and Xena tell Precinct 13579 that they are over budget, leading Olympia and Otis to cut corners with other agents, they have no issue with overspending on things like a caviar bar and massage chairs.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Once Otis realizes that the services of Odd Squad are being abused by Christine, he is rightfully annoyed, and makes his leave. Olympia, however, comes back to recite her Catchphrase in full after having been interrupted by Otis, before taking her leave with Christine's lamp.
    • Xena tells Olympia, Otis, and Ms. O that they have until the end of the day to fix the over-budget issue. Ms. O grows exasperated enough to take her leave off the bat.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: Both Xavier and Xena have Greed and Pride as some of their character-defining traits, with a small dose of Wrath (malicious, a complete Lack of Empathy, constantly scolding and belittling agents).
  • Slogan-Yelling Megaphone Guy: While she doesn't use it to shout slogans, Olympia borrows the X's megaphone to announce that everyone can get their things back.
  • Standard Female Grab Area: Ms. O, who is by this point a Technically-Living Zombie suffering from severe withdrawal, grips Olympia in this manner, putting her other hand on her shoulder. All Olympia can do is give worried yelps, while Otis just looks rightfully confused.
  • Stealing from the Till: While Xavier and Xena work for Odd Squad as an organization, they don't work at Precinct 13579 and aren't technically employed by Ms. O, instead working alongside the agents. Nonetheless, Otis confronts them about their theft of money from the precinct's budget, leading the precinct to be accused of overspending and, as consequence, under threat of being shut down permanently. What's worse is that they've been stealing money from the budget for three months, and apparently, no one caught onto it until this point.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Ms. O goes from calmly telling Olympia that she'll cancel her juice delivery to yelling at her that she can go without juice for a day when the agent asks if she's sure she wants to cancel the order.
Ms. O: I'll believe it more if I yell it.
  • Super-Strong Child: Olympia, with the combined help of Otis, is able to lift one side of a couch with ease. Not only that, but they're able to lift it onto a moving truck with the help of Christine.
  • Technically-Living Zombie: Ms. O becomes one of these by the climax of the episode, and has a one-track mind set on juice. As the problem grows worse, she even stumbles around and moans "Juuuuuice..." much like a zombie would.
  • Theme Naming: It's lampshaded by Otis.
Ms. O: I see you've met Xavier and Xena.
Otis: Wait, you're Odd Squad agents and your names don't start with O?
Xena: We're the X's. We work alongside the O's.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Oona develops one of these when staring at the light on her stationary bike, which falls in line with her Cute But Psycho tendencies. Not even Ms. O yelling can snap her out of it!
  • Unwitting Pawn: Subverted. Christine's problem is that she needs help moving out of her house, since she doesn't have movers. To do this, she enlists the help of Odd Squad agents, whose job description doesn't include helping someone move to a new house. However, Olympia and Otis are quick to catch on to what Christine is doing, and being rightfully annoyed that they're wasting valuable time, refuse to help her any further and take their leave. Olympia, not resisting the urge to say her Catchphrase in full, doesn't enter the tubes right away, and instead comes back to recite it, which is an opportunity for Christine to help her move another one of her items to the new house.
  • Worldbuilding: This episode introduces the Task Force rank and department officially, after having had an Early-Bird Cameo in "First Day" by way of a brief mention. Furthermore, the interior of the Task Force Room is also seen.
    • The Glue department is introduced. note  In addition, Olo, the head of the Glue department, is revealed to have built the entirety of Precinct 13579's Headquarters.
    • Odd Squad precincts are revealed to have set budgets which can be used freely and the funds of which are refilled on a monthly basis — go over the budget, and your precinct becomes at risk of being permanently shut down.
    • It's revealed that all departments have their own budget (which the money for Precinct 13579 is likely allocated to, for them to use as needed), and how they spend the money varies.
      • For Security, $5 goes to new wires, $2 goes to electrical tape, and $10 monthly on batons.
      • Ocean in the Creature Control department spends money on creature food, and also spends $8 a month on a hammock that he rents.
      • Oona spends $12 a month on electricity for the lab.
      • Workers in the Mail Room, the Food and Beverage department, and the IT department spend a combined $10 on various things. (How the $10 is divided among the three departments isn't explained.)
      • Olo in the Glue department is the biggest spender of all, spending $50 a month on school glue.

She may not know anything medical, but she does know how to drive Oona insane.
Dr. O No

Airdates: October 17, 2017 note , October 23, 2016 note

Oona struggles to help Dr. O's replacement cure patients with odd ailments.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Olly constantly gets Oona's name wrong, which serves as a Running Gag for her throughout the episode.
  • Aesop Amnesia: The mathematical Aesop surrounding measurement with tools such as rulers and cups tends to fly over Olly's head quite a bit. While she does understand things such as measuring up to 12 inches, she doesn't know such things as "holding your place" (i.e., holding your finger on the object where 12 inches would be and moving the ruler to the side to count further) and using cups to measure liquid, not rulers.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Olly at one point refers to Oona as "science lady".
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: The patient Oro treats at the end of the episode has an illness that causes her to have rainbow-colored skin.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Olly is able to change Oona's undershirt from a plain white button-down shirt to an "anti-caf shirt" to represent her fight against the cafeteria workers. Without even touching Oona. Not only that, but she manages to fit a flatbread sandwich in the Scientist's pocket, still without touching her. Oona is rightfully appalled, and begins Backing Away Slowly without a word spoken.
  • Big Brother Is Watching: It's lampshaded by Olly numerous times, as she firmly believes that the cafeteria workers are evil and are constantly watching others.
  • Blunt "Yes": Ms. O gives one of these when asking Oona how Olly is doing in her new position.
Ms. O: Oona! How's the new doctor doing?
    Oona: Honestly?
    Ms. O: Yes.
    Oona: [unsure] Eeeeehhhhh...
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Oro recites the former Dr. O's "What's next?!" Catchphrase shortly after accepting Ms. O's offer to be promoted to the Medical department in Olly's place.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: At the beginning of the episode, Oro asks Oona for a wrench, a pineapple, and a pineapple wrench.
  • Busman's Vocabulary: Oro's Maintenance job leaks into his new Medical job, as shown at the end of the episode, where he treats a patient who has rainbow-colored skin by using a torque wrench and a funnel on her.
  • Butt-Monkey: Oona really gets put through the wringer in this episode. Poor girl...
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Oro, a Maintenance worker, is helping Oona fix her lab at the beginning of the episode, and is constantly pulling her aside to discuss the other problems the lab has. At the end of the episode, he takes Olly's place as the new Doctor of Precinct 13579, while Olly is moved to the Food and Beverage department.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: While there have been numerous agents we've seen that are air-headed and aren't very intelligent, Olly quite possibly takes the cake for being the queen of Cloudcuckooland. She's ditzy, has an odd vendetta against those working in the cafeteria for an unexplained reason, and is able to do things such as place things in Oona's hands without touching them and even change her shirt without Oona noticing.
  • Clueless Boss: Ms. O is unaware of just how much stress Olly is putting on Oona. Even when the Scientist snaps at her and Olly, she doesn't even flinch. By the end of the episode, she appears to be unaware that Oona is not on good terms with Olly, even after witnessing her snap at the former Odd Squad Doctor.
  • Comically Inept Healing: Olly has absolutely no idea how to cure odd ailments and enlists Oona to help, which is why Oona is constantly drawn away from her lab repairs. When attempting to cure a patient suffering from salad-itis with "grubble grass", she decides to take a wild guess at which, out of the three grass plants, is 4 inches. Luckily, Oona manages to stop her and delivers the mathematical Aesop of the episode to boot.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Olly. All the time.
    • When Oona teaches her how to measure things with a ruler, she is the one that takes pieces of grubble grass and measures it, then hands it to Olly to feed the patient. Once he is cured of his salad-itis, Olly praises herself and says that she's good at her job, before giving a preemptive "you're welcome" and beginning to ramble about how the man can take the bowl he sat in home with him as a souvenir.
    • She gives up when trying to find the cure for hammerhead-osis, tossing the old Dr. O's medical book in the garbage, leading Oona to fish it out and walk her through how to measure a 16-inch zebra leaf.
    • At the climax of the episode, after Oona hits her Rage Breaking Point and yells at her, it flies completely over her head as she remarks that, while Oona makes a good point, she makes an excellent flatbread sandwich, and leaves to go buy mayonnaise.
  • Confusion Fu: Olly lives and breathes this trope to the point where she could potentially rival Ohlm at it!
  • Continuity Nod: The first gadget Ms. O hands to Oona to repair is the same one she used to free her from Obbs' mind control.
    • The Bland-Name Product ketchup and mustard bottles are seen again after they appeared in "Agent Oksana's Kitchen Nightmares".
    • This isn't the first time someone has put an article of clothing on someone without touching them.
    • "Trials and Tubulations" featured a man with tentacles for his lower half. In this episode, a patient also has tentacles for his lower half, but unlike the man from "Trials and Tubulations", this man's tentacles are classified as a medical condition known as "tentacle feet".
  • The Ditz: Olly. Boy howdy, Olly. Not only does her ditziness prevent her from doing her job well, but it gets on Oona's nerves quite often and causes the Scientist a great deal of stress.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: "Hammerhead-osis" sounds awfully similar to "hemorrhoid-osis" — and while that isn't a real medical term, hemorrhoids are a very real thing.
  • Double Meaning: When Oona asks Olly if she looked in the former Dr. O's book for a cure for hammerhead-osis, Olly said she did, but it was garbage (i.e., the content inside was worthless). Oona can't find the book, and when she asks where it is, Olly directs her to the trash can, where she threw the book out.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The office of O'Q, Precinct 13579's personal tailor, makes an appearance. O'Q himself wouldn't debut until "New Jacket Required", while the office was previously seen in World Turned Odd.
  • Earthquake Machine: Oona has a beaker in her lab that, when moved, causes the ground to shake briefly while sci-fi noises play.
  • Fantastic Flora: Odd Squad is home to such plants as grubble grass and zebra leaves.
  • Finishing Each Other's Sentences: Oona knows exactly what Ms. O is doing when she takes out two gadgets from Hammerspace.
    Ms. O: Also...can you-
    Oona: Fix these? I'll try.
    • Oro does it with Oona shortly after.
Oro: Maple syrup: done and done. Sign here, pal.
Oona: Thanks, Oro. Does...this mean I can get back-
    Oro: To work? Not exactly.
  • Foreshadowing: Olly's ability to cook, along with her giving Oona various food items throughout the episode as well as all of the foodstuffs that sit inside of the Medical bay, foreshadows her eventual movement from the Medical department to the Food and Beverage department, and where her skills really lie.
  • For Inconvenience, Press "1": Olly invokes this when she imitates an Interactive Voice Response system while on the phone with Oona.
Olly: If you want to help me, please press or say 1.
    Oona: [despaired] One.
  • Gracefully Demoted: Played with. While the Medical and Food and Beverage departments are equal in ranking, Olly is not fit to be a doctor due to her incompetence, and since the order is given by Ms. O, it could effectively count as this.
  • Hammerspace: Despite being a new employee of Odd Squad, Olly demonstrates this skill in a similar manner as the former Dr. O did, taking out two plane tickets from her pocket for her and Oona.
  • Here We Go Again!: As Oona and Ms. O are watching Oro treat a patient at the end of the episode, Ms. O remarks that Oona must miss Olly now that she's gone. Oona responds by saying that she'll be fine, as she believes that Olly is gone for good. However, Ms. O tells her that she's moved Olly to the Food and Beverage department, causing Oona to give a Big "WHAT?!" in response as the kitchen worker in question walks by and asks her if she wants a flatbread sandwich. Cut to the Scientist looking absolutely terrified, complete with a Scare Chord to end the episode.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: At the end of the episode, Olly gets moved by Ms. O to the same department she's been fighting against: the Food and Beverage department.
  • I Heard That: Implied with the woman who has hammerhead-osis, as she turns her head towards Oona and Olly when the latter tells the former that the woman is a hammerhead forever.
  • The Main Characters Do Everything: Defied and lampshaded by Ms. O, who tells Oona that not everything has to involve Olympia and Otis, which is why she entrusts the Scientist with the task of helping Olly out.
  • Mirthless Laughter: When Olly leaves Ms. O and Oona to go to the grocery store to get more mayonnaise, Oona has to ask Ms. O if the New Dr. O seriously left a patient in need to go and buy mayonnaise, which is accompanied by her laughing in a strained manner throughout.
Oona: Did she seriously just leave to buy mayonnaise?!
  • Motor Mouth: Olly delves into this when meeting up with Oona at Yellowstone National Park.
Olly: I got a small problem, back at HQ? Upstairs, where I work. Tiiiiny sitch in the Med bay, 2 seconds real quick, in and out, doctor problem, love your help, got a puzzle piece missing, you're the piece, food for thought, you're the food, got some toast, you're the crust, I'm the butter, you're the fluffy part, time flies, having fun, say yes!
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Olly goes from calling Oona from inside the Medical bay to walking up right behind her and tapping her on the shoulder in 5 seconds. Naturally, Oona becomes startled.
  • Power Glows: When the patient with salad-itis and the patient with tentacle feet are cured, they briefly grow green as the antidotes take their effects.
  • Rage Breaking Point: When Ms. O arrives outside of the Medical bay asking what is happening with a patient who has tentacle feet (with the tentacles flailing wildly), Oona — who had been continuously stressed up until this point — absolutely snaps, yelling at Ms. O that she is trying to help Olly, but has no experience in the Medical field whatsoever, and Olly's ditziness and over-reliance on her has officially pushed her over the brink. Olly is completely blind to how upset Oona is, and leaves to go buy mayonnaise, which only serves to fray the Scientist's temper even further. Luckily, Oro appears, having fixed the lab's latest problem, and helps Oona to remedy the situation, which leads Ms. O to promote him as a doctor in Olly's place.
  • Rank Up: Oro is promoted to the Medical department. However, he still works in Maintenance as well, meaning he now has two positions instead of one.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Olly attempts something like this at one point.
Olly: Listen, budster. Got a little probski up here in the Med bay-ski, little help for an old friendski?
  • Sanity Slippage: Oona's lab is in a constant need of repair throughout the episode. That, combined with the mass amount of gadgets she has to repair and helping out Olly, doesn't do many wonders for her mental health. As a result, by the climax of the episode, the stress pushes her over the edge and she snaps at both Ms. O and Olly.
  • Scatting: Olly does this when she gives Oona a burger and remarks that the cafeteria workers have nothing on them. Oona can only stare for a few moments before she makes her retreat and heads down to the lab.
  • Series Continuity Error: Oro remarks numerous times that things are a little slow in his department, which allows him free time to fix up issues he finds in Oona's lab. However, Oro is in the Maintenance department, whose workers were explicitly stated (and shown) to be in a constant state of busyness by O'Mary and Obby, and later Olympia and Otis, in "High Maintenance".
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Even though she's new to Odd Squad, Olly seems to have this ability down pat, as she appears in front of Oona when she and Oro are at Yellowstone National Park — over 1,500 miles away from Toronto. When Oona asks her how she got to Yellowstone, Olly says that she followed Oona there through the lab.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Every time Oona is summoned by Olly, she has this reaction.
Olly: Psst, hey, science lady! Ooooobaaaa! I need your help.
    Oona: [unenthusiastic] Okay...be right there!
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: It's heavily downplayed since it isn't full-on vomit, but the man with salad-itis manages to throw up a whole, undigested cherry tomato as a result of his illness.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Olly is originally known as New Dr. O, which is the name that she was born with. Because of her name, Ms. O promoted her to the Medical department to be the former Dr. O's replacement. She is renamed "Olly" in "Haunt Squad". note
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Downplayed; Ms. O blocks Oona from going back to the lab briefly to discuss how Olly is faring.
  • Worldbuilding: This episode introduces a few new functions of the lab, such as anti-mummy protection and maple syrup kept in a few containers hidden in the countertop (which, when kept at high levels, prevent explosions).
