It's the Breakfast Club! Get it?
The Breakfast Club

Airdates: July 20, 2017 note , September 28, 2016 note

Delivery Debbie goes undercover to stop a group of villains who call themselves the Breakfast Club.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Debbie does this due to her anxiety while answering a phone call from the Breakfast Club. It gets to such a point where she delves into Scatting and needs a cue card from Ms. O just to help her out.
  • Acting Unnatural: Due to being a Nervous Wreck, Debbie does this often when interacting with the Breakfast Club.
    • When she delivers the pizza to the Breakfast Club, the Waffler gets her own wallet and asks the deliverywoman how much the trio owes her. She says it's $1, then jacks up the price to $10 million. The Waffler takes notice of this, but ultimately doesn't sniff her out.
    • The second time, Debbie forcefully enters the Breakfast Club's hotel room and gives them a coupon for a free pizza from her pizzeria. While they ask why the coupon is printed on stationary from the hotel, Debbie tells them that she stays at the Shmumbers Inn every night just for the stationary.
Debbie: Hello and good day. I have a coupon for a free pizza at my pizzeria which you can use at my pizzeria for pizza at my pizzeria, it's pizza...pizzeria...
    • The third go-around has Debbie bring the trio bars of soap. From the same hotel they're staying at. But only the best-smelling ones.
  • Arc Number: Downplayed; the episode has an affinity with the number 25, which is determined to be the Breakfast Club trio's favorite number by Debbie.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Corn Flakes notices the mini table in the pizza, she examines it, while Olympia, Debbie and Otis look on with disappointed looks. She then tells Over-Easy and the Waffler that the table would be great...for their dollhouse.
  • Bland-Name Product: The Shmumbers Inn logo looks strikingly similar to the logo for Days Inn.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The number 25, which Debbie realizes is the address where the syrup volcano is set to blow, noting the different "25" motifs around the hotel room.
  • Continuity Nod: Debbie's phone has the same ringtone as that of her competitor's, Delivery Doug. However, while he has what appears to be a walkie-talkie for a phone, she has a modern-age smartphone.
  • Covered in Gunge: While Ms. O's pancake suit absorbs a majority of the syrup from the syrup volcano, some of it gets on the suit itself.
  • Delivery Guy Infiltration: While Delivery Debbie is a real pizza delivery person and isn't just dressed up as one, this episode has her attempting to find out the Breakfast Club's plan so Ms. O and the rest of Odd Squad can stop it. She does this by first delivering a pizza to them that they ordered, then by giving them other things like crayons and bars of soap. note
  • The Ditz: The Waffler. Need we say more?
  • Ear Ache: Ms. O's command to "clear the area!" leaves Ohlm wincing from how loud it is.
  • Eat the Camera: Zig-zagged for Olympia while testing the camera. She moves back and forth towards the camera as though she's contemplating eating it.
  • Edible Theme Naming: The villainous group The Breakfast Club have three members, all of whom are named after breakfast food: Over-Easy, Corn Flakes, and the Waffler.
  • Energy Absorption: Downplayed. Ms. O's pancake suit absorbs the maple syrup from the Breakfast Club's syrup volcano, but can't reuse it.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Debbie has one that delves into the territory of being an Overly Long Gag (taken up to eleven; it's the longest gag the show has had), as she points out how the Breakfast Club has an affinity for the number 25: coloring with colored pencils laced with manganese note  held at a 25-degree angle taken from a box of 25, paying for the pizza with $25, etc.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: When Corn Flakes complains that the pizza is taking forever, the Waffler remarks that even though they're villains, one can't rush quality when it comes to making pizza.
  • Evil Plan: It's eventually revealed that the Breakfast Club planted a syrup volcano at 25 Estavez Boulevard, which is set to go off.
  • Fictional Currency: This episode reveals that most everyone in town pays for things in Jackalope Dollars, the show's primary currency — including villains, as The Waffler pays for the pizza with Jackalope Dollars. Presumably, they function like American dollars do, with the villainess giving Debbie a $20 and a $5.
  • Get Out!: When the Waffler inadvertently tells Debbie about their odd plan on Estavez Boulevard (which is downtown), Over-Easy pushes the deliverywoman out the door.
  • I'll Never Tell You What I'm Telling You!: The Waffler. Oh so much the Waffler. She even outright says that telling people the address where their Evil Plan is taking place is her "thing" at one point!
  • Improvised Armor: Ms. O wears a suit of pancakes that serves as protective armor of sorts for the syrup volcano.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Upon seeing the Breakfast Club for the first time, Olympia remarks that they don't look very dangerous. Ms. O is quick to prove her wrong by showing her a photo of a tornado made out of French toast that they released a few towns over.
  • Insult Backfire: The Waffler is ditzy enough to have Over-Easy's criticism of her art fly right over her head.
The Waffler: Here's a picture of Ms. O's face when she sees our odd plan. [giggling]
    Over-Easy: Yeah, that's awful.
    The Waffler: Thank you!
[Over-Easy and Corn Flakes exchange "what the hell" looks]
  • Lower-Deck Episode: While Olympia and Otis serve as pretty prominent figures in stopping the Breakfast Club's plan, the episode primarily focuses on Debbie, as she is able to stop the trio.
  • Nervous Wreck: Debbie is one throughout the episode — and rightfully so, considering that not only is she the key to stopping the Breakfast Club's Evil Plan, but she's never done anything such as an infiltration before.
  • Never Say "Die": While not stated in the context of a living thing's death, the trope is still shockingly averted as Otis states that the camera is dead after Corn Flakes washes it in water and ruins it.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: What makes the Waffler an ineffective villainess is her constant reveals of the Breakfast Club's Evil Plan to Odd Squad and Delivery Debbie. The first time around, she tells the agents that the "odd thing" the trio is doing downtown is currently contained in a house down the block from the hotel they're staying in, and said house is on Estavez Boulevard — and it only gets worse from there. Olympia and Otis exploit this well in order to stop the trio's plan.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: With a team name such as Breakfast Club they may not sound very menacing. But they were able to release a French toast tornado at one point, so... yeah.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Not only do Olympia and Otis do this, but Delivery Debbie does at one point when the Waffler asks how Ms. O figured out the address where ths syrup volcano was.
  • Only Shop in Town: Apparently, Debbie's pizza place is the only one of its kind in town.
  • Orbital Shot: One is used as Debbie is explaining why 25 Estavez Boulevard is where the Evil Plan is located.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode title is a direct reference to the movie of the same name.
  • Shout-Out:
Ms. O: You take Ringwald Drive to Nelson Street, go down an alley named Sheedy, make a right on Anthony Michael Hall, and stop at Gratuitous Reference Way.
    • The villain group also refers to themselves as the Breakfast Club, only they're villains named after breakfast foods.
    • Debbie's ringtone is set to the classic 1994 Nokia ringtone. Quite ironic, considering her phone is a smartphone.
  • Signature Headgear: The Waffler has a hair dec that looks like a waffle covered in maple syrup, befitting her name.
  • Start X to Stop X: Ms. O decides to "fight breakfast with breakfast" in order to stop the syrup volcano.
  • Terrible Artist: Averted for Debbie, who is a pretty talented artist. However, the trope is played straight for the Waffler.
  • Terrible Trio: While there are no mass size differences between them, The Breakfast Club serves as this. The Waffler tends to serve as the leader, although she's more incompetent than both Over-Easy and Corn Flakes.
  • There Can Be Only One: Olympia and Otis capitalize on the Waffler's frequent mistakes in revealing the Evil Plan of having a syrup volcano envelop a house by narrowing down what address has the odd thing about to occur.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: While Ms. O moves her team downtown, Debbie asks Olympia and Otis if she has to go back into the hotel room. They turn around and nod their heads, leading her to give a worried sigh.
  • Tin-Can Telephone: Olympia does a one-sided variant with a plastic cup at one point, pressing it against the wall in order to hear the Breakfast Club in the other room.

The Main 4 say goodbye to a longtime co-worker and friend.
Dr. O: Party Time, Excellent

Airdates: July 20, 2017 note , September 28, 2016 note

When Olympia finds out Dr. O is leaving, she struggles to throw the best goodbye party ever.

Tropes:

  • 100% Heroism Rating: Dr. O is known by many people throughout town, who all tell Olympia how the doctor helped them in some way.
  • Affection-Hating Kid: Otis is one, as instead of joining in the Group Hug at the end of the episode, he goes for a handshake with Dr. O instead.
  • Always Identical Twins: Noise Test is a band comprised of Soundcheck-ish's identical twin brothers. While there are some differences (which isn't aided by the show's medium being live-action and not animation), they look nearly identical to the actual band members of Soundcheck-ish.
  • Are You Pondering What I'm Pondering?: When Olympia gets the idea to have a goodbye party for Dr. O, this exchange ensues:
Olympia: I cannot believe this is Dr. O's last day here. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
[zoom in to Otis's brain, which shows multiple copies of him performing dance moves in space]
    Otis: Probably not.
Olympia: We have to throw Dr. O a surprise goodbye party.
Otis: Whoa. I wasn't even in that ballpark. But I'm on board.
  • Basement-Dweller: The Danny T ripoff from Soundcheck-ish apparently still lives in his mom's basement, and wishes to make it big with his Soundcheck "tribute band".
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Inverted. Otis has the least amount of cake on him compared to Olympia, Oona and Ms. O.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Otis uses the same Catchphrase Olive had when answering her phone in Season 1, "Go for [name]", only he substitutes her name with his own.
  • The Bus Came Back: Party Pam returns after her debut in "First Day".
  • Cool Mask: In order to make Dr. O's surprise goodbye party catered towards her, Olympia has everyone wear masks of Dr. O's face. "Cool" would definitely not be an adjective used to describe these — they're generally regarded as creepy by the other agents.
  • Continuity Nod: In one of the flashbacks, Olympia is shown having the same headphone pair and an identical music player to Otto's in "Dance Like Nobody's Watching".
    • This isn't the first time a Surprise Party was thrown for an important character, only for it to go disastrously wrong. However, unlike with Ms. O's party, Dr. O's is a goodbye party, whereas the Director wasn't stepping down and leaving Odd Squad; she was celebrating a birthday.
    • Just like in "The Perfect Score", this episode deconstructs Olympia's The Perfectionist trait. However, it's done to a lesser extent.
  • Contrived Coincidence: With only $1, Olympia, desperate for any semblance of party decorations, gets 100 balloons from the retirement party of a man named Len Buxton, with his face on the balloons. As it turns out, Len is one of Dr. O's more favored patients, and she appreciates the balloons.
    • The entire ruined party becomes one of these, as it turns out that Dr. O not only loves the balloons, but loves the creepy masks of her face as well, and says that the party is one she'll never forget.
  • Covered in Gunge: As a result of the ribbon twirler knocking the cake up into the air and having it fall on the Main 4, they all become covered head to toe in cake.
  • Cringe Comedy: The party in and of itself. Everything, from the music to the performers, even to the way the party is ruined, is awkward and embarrassing for everyone involved, including the Main 4.
  • Cutting Corners: Olympia and Otis are forced to set up a heartfelt goodbye party for Dr. O...with only 4 Jackalope Dollars.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: This episode deconstructs Olympia's perfectionism trait. She goes to incredible lengths to put together a memorable goodbye party for Dr. O, but due to wanting it to be perfect (which isn't helped by Ms. O telling her and Otis they need to plan "the best party" for the doctor), she goes overboard to such a point that she gives everyone masks with Dr. O's face on them to wear.
  • Determinator: Averted for Otis, who proceeds to say that putting together a party with a mere $4 is impossible, before Olympia sets him right.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Dr. O, who has served Precinct 13579 ever since Oscar was promoted to the newly-formed position of Lab Director (in the equally newly-formed Science department), repeatedly announces that she is leaving Precinct 13579 for space. The only one who cares enough to listen is Otis, while other background agents could care less. Olympia, however, is too preoccupied with various things to notice.
  • Face Palm: Olympia does one when the amateur ribbon twirler reveals that Odd Squad will be his first public performance.
  • Fictional Currency: While Jackalope Dollars have been seen before, this episode confirms the name for the show's currency.
  • Flashback Cut: One is shown as Dr. O makes her announcement about leaving Precinct 13579 while Olympia is busy with various things.
    • Defied by Olympia at one point as the baker reminisces about Dr. O fixing her croissant hands.
  • Flat "What": Olympia has this reaction when she finds there's only $4 in the Odd Squad piggybank.
  • invoked Follow the Leader: An in-universe example occurs with Soundcheck-ish, a Soundcheck "tribute band" that is willing to play at Dr. O's party for only $2. The fake Danny T even tells Olympia and Otis outright that they imitate Soundcheck, which is why they're cheaper. However, the band ends up quitting when Olympia takes one of Otis's 2 dollars (which he hasn't paid the band yet with) and spends it on party decorations, while he uses the $1 remaining to pay Soundcheck-ish.
    • Another in-universe example occurs with Noise Test, who also imitate Soundcheck, but are direct relatives of Soundcheck-ish's members, and perform terrible parodies of Soundcheck songs that for some reason are all related to food, such as a parody of "Up, Down, Left, Right" being about baking a pumpkin pie for someone. Oona enjoys them the most.
  • Foreshadowing: Ms. O only has $4 left in the Odd Squad piggybank note  for Olympia and Otis to put together a special goodbye party. Come "Xs and Os", it's revealed that Precinct 13579 has been repeatedly overspending, forcing agents to make budget cuts that, for most if not all, end in complete disaster.
  • Gag Echo: When Olympia realizes that there's nothing specific at the party for Dr. O, this exchange ensues.
Otis: I feel like you're going to ask me for more money to buy something to make this specific for Dr. O.
Olympia: Otis, can I please have some more money to buy something to make this specific to Dr. O?
  • Gilligan Cut: Olympia confidently says that she can get a cake for $2. Cut to a local baker telling her that she absolutely cannot get a cake for $2.
    • She later tells the baker that she can absolutely bake her own cake. Cut to the cake, which looks as though an inflated balloon is used for filling.
  • Group Hug: The Main 4 (sans Otis) and Dr. O all share one over the course of the episode. Otis, who doesn't like hugs, opts for a handshake instead.
  • Heel–Face Return: Party Pam's final appearance in "First Day" was her being pulled aside by Ms. O to have a talk with her (presumably to fire the chef and reprimand her for her odd misdeeds). This episode has her on the side of good, where she's more than willing to help Olympia with Dr. O's goodbye party and even knows the doctor personally.
  • Hiccup Hijinks: The O-Syncs work similar to this, with the only solution being to scare them out of the person who has them, along with it being possible for another person to get them if they are startled by the scare.
  • Hong Kong Dub: Parodied. The Cold Open client's problem is that her speech doesn't match her lip movements, with sounds of various objects, like a vase shattering, also being affected. It's apparently a common enough problem in the world of the show to have a name: the O-Syncs.
  • I Heard That: When Olympia is asking Otis and Oona what the word "amateur" means, the amateur ribbon twirler remarks that he heard her before telling the trio that he's never twirled ribbons in public before.
  • Implausible Deniability: As Olympia hands out Dr. O masks to the other agents, she tells them that they aren't creepy at all, whatsoever. Oona immediately looks at hers and declares that it's creepy.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Olympia confidently tells Otis that it's a good thing the partner pair have unlimited resources for Dr. O's surprise goodbye party. Ms. O comes in hot with her trademark Stealth Hi/Bye move to tell her that they have very limited resources.
    • Once Olympia secures entertainment and a cake for the party, Otis tells her that all they have to do is get supplies from the Party Supply Room, which they believe to be stocked. Ms. O once again does her trademark Stealth Hi/Bye move, telling them that the room is completely empty.
    • When Olympia is passing out Dr. O masks to the other partygoers, she says that they aren't creepy, at all. Oona receives hers to wear, looks at it, and says that wearing Dr. O masks seems creepy. And then she puts on the mask anyway.
  • I Remember It Like It Was Yesterday: The baker says this to Olympia when explaining how Dr. O fixed her hands that had been turned into croissants.
  • The Klutz: The amateur ribbon twirler. It would be a case of Irony if not for the fact that he's an amateur and has never twirled ribbons in public before.
  • Lethal Chef: Olympia cannot make a cake of her own, even with the recipe and the ingredients given to her by a baker. What she does end up making is something that looks more akin to a large inflated balloon covered in frosting, which she acknowledges as having a "certain charm" to it.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: While Otis is fully aware that Dr. O is leaving Precinct 13579, Olympia is not, since she is shown being occupied with various things when Dr. O makes the announcement (listening to music, making something in a blender, and cleaning her desk with a leafblower).
  • Neat Freak: Downplayed. Olympia's perfectionism extends primarily to her work, but she is very organized and doesn't like dirty things — hence, she doesn't treat cleaning her desk as any sort of big deal.
  • No Name Given: The members of both Soundcheck-ish and Noise Test aren't given proper names. While the latter isn't listed in the credits at all, the bandmates of the former are listed as "Fake [Soundcheck member]".
  • Noodle Incident: Whatever caused the Party Supply Room's stock to run out is something that Ms. O either bore witness to, got wind of, or was somehow involved in. However, we never hear how the room's stock ran out, as she tells Olympia and Otis that there's No Time to Explain.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Not even 5 seconds passes between the time Olympia says "it happens sometimes" (in regards to the O-Syncs) and moving next to the Cold Open client in order to scare her.
  • Overcrank: Used when the amateur ribbon twirler inadvertently ruins the party.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode's title is a reference to a Catchphrase in the movie Wayne's World.
  • Put on a Bus: This episode is Dr. O's final appearance on the show, as her actress, Peyton Kennedy, grew too old to keep playing the role. It's one of the more notable examples of the trope when applied to this show, as the episode's plot revolves around her leaving, in contrast to many other characters and actors (such as Oksana and Madeline Barbeau) who leave the show without any sort of official farewell.
  • Sanity Slippage: While it's not as extreme as in "Olympia's Day", Olympia slowly begins to lose her sanity and grows exasperated over time as Dr. O's goodbye party turns into an absolute disaster. Lucky for her and the other partygoers, unlike in "Olympia's Day", she doesn't have a Freak Out.
  • Slow "NO!": Ms. O does one when the cake gets knocked into the air by the amateur ribbon twirler.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Ms. O does this quite a lot in the episode, including when Olympia and Otis need to make change for a dollar.
  • Suddenly Shouting: "We need to make sure this is a party she note  won't forget. GOOD LUCK, AGENTS!! I don't know why I just yelled that."
  • Surprise Party: The premise of the episode. Olympia wants to throw a surprise goodbye party for Dr. O. However, on a limited budget, it goes disastrously wrong.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Most people clean papers off of their desk using their hands. Olympia, on the other hand, takes a leafblower to them.
  • This Is Not a Drill: Olympia says the trope near-verbatim just before Dr. O enters the bullpen, only replacing "drill" with "test".
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Oona's comments about how the setup of Dr. O's party doesn't look like it's tailored to the doctor at all is the push Olympia needs to get the ever-so-bright idea of how to make the party more for her: give everyone masks to wear of Dr. O's face.
  • We Are Not Going Through That Again: When Dr. O tells the Main 4 that her replacement starts tomorrow before walking away, Olympia excitedly suggests that they throw the replacement Odd Squad Doctor a welcome party. The rest of the agents are quick to pull a Screw This, I'm Outta Here, followed by Olympia Comically Missing the Point note  and excitedly remarking that they're starting to plan the party already.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Olympia gives Otis a very hearty dose of this when he explains what happened to Soundcheck-ish, and whom he got to perform at Dr. O's party instead.
  • Worldbuilding: Apparently, there is an Odd Squad space station, where Dr. O is heading to. Unfortunately, we don't see it in the episode.
