Recap / OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes S1E17 "Know Your Mom"

Go To

K.O. wants to surprise Carol with a gift for Mother's Day, but does not know what to get her.

Tropes:

  • Adam Westing: Succulentus, a parody of aging Nu Metal stars, is voiced by Jonathan Davis of Korn, the band that essentially invented the genre.
  • Black Comedy Burst: When K.O. calls Prostratum, one of the members of Kactus Krew, there's a cut to a nurse forlornly making a bed while a phone rings, suggesting that Prostratum just died.
  • Call-Back: When Carol thinks back to why she quit being a hero, the same mysterious flashback from "We Messed Up" plays.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Succulentus at first comes to a showdown with Carol, but he's too old and gets winded too easily. Carol invites him to a cup of coffee and start reminiscing about the old times.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Played for Laughs. A Real Magic Skeleton tells Brandon that there are consequences to making K.O feel horrible about his gift just so he could eat the macaroni. In the end, Brandon is in the bathroom puking his guts out, with Skeleton sternly reminding him "Your actions have consequences."
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: As it turns out, K.O. didn't need to take Brandon's advice in regards to giving Carol a better gift, as she genuinely likes his macaroni drawings.
  • Shout-Out: A poster on the front door of the Fitness Dojo has a picture based on the 1984 arcade game Karate Champ.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Succulentus is old and hasn't fought for years, while Carol's still in fairly good shape. Naturally, this means Succulentus tires himself out in his fight with her.
    • Brandon suffers from stomach problems after eating uncooked macaroni that was glued to a card.
  • Vague Age: Parodied when K.O. says that he's exactly 6-11 years old.
  • Waxing Lyrical: 90% of Succulentus's dialogue consists of reference to early 2000's Nu Metal acts like Korn, Linkin Park and Evanescence. Justified, as the voice actor for Succulentus is Johnathan Davis from Korn.
  • What Are Records?: K.O. enters a phone booth to call some of Carol's old enemies. He looks at the receiver and asks "What is that for?" before pulling out his cell phone.
  • You Monster!: A Real Magic Skeleton calls Brandon a monster for making K.O. think that his gift for Carol was trash just to eat the macaroni off K.O.'s Mother's Day card.
