Recap / Numberjacks S 1 E 17 Off Colour

Go To

Three is searching for something in the Cosy Room and accidentally hits Four in the face with one of her toys. Six asks what the matter is and Three says that she can't find something. When Six asks Three to specify, Four reveals that she lost one of her "slidey shapes". Four is still sulky about being hit in the face, and suggests she tidy them up despite her still playing with them, but Six offers to help and asks what the shape looks like. Three says it's a circle and Four finds a blue circle, but Three wants a yellow circle. They gather up the yellow items and eventually Four finds it, but Three doesn't let Four and Six take the credit.

The alarm sounds, they race to the control room, and Agent 88 reports a problem: some things are going missing. Namely, a little girl's pens, paints, and building blocks. Three wants to go out, but Six thinks Four should go out as he found Three's shape. Neither Three nor Four are certain about this, but then Five points out that Three is good at using her brain and figuring things out, so she'd do well in the control room.

Thus, Four is sent out (Five is a little concerned about the goldfish watching but Six thinks they'll just forget) and lands on the little girl's shirt (but not the one she's wearing). Then, one of her plush toys disappears. An agent wonders if the missing items have something in common, and Three observes that they're all yellow.

Another agent reports strange goings-on by the river, so Four heads over to investigate. A man's dinghy disappears, and Six suggests foul play. His suspicions are confirmed when Spooky Spoon shows up and steals another man's raincoat. Then, a man playing wheelchair basketball's shirt disappears, along with another man's shoes, however, those clothes were not yellow— they were red.

Three wonders why Spooky is taking red and yellow items, and she explains that she wants the world to be less colourful because she's afraid she looks boring next to the colourful items. By the time Four arrives at the gymnasium, all the red shirts are gone and so is Spooky Spoon.

Agent 88 calls in, saying that Spooky is now stealing blue things— she swipes a car, a backpack (belonging to the same man who lost his shoes) and the blue shirts belonging to athletes in the same wheelchair basketball game (so now they can't play due to not knowing who's on what team).

Five imagines Spooky Spoon taking some roses and grass, turning the sky white, and finally taking the sun. Four then realises that if Spooky Spoon is taking blue things, she could take him— and she does, making him disappear. Understandably, the other Numberjacks are very worried and angry.

The agents suggest bringing blue back into the world to retrieve Four, so they start up the brain gain machine. He comes back but is phasing in and out of existence, so they use one of Four's buddy blocks. Four comes back completely and uses the brain gain to put the other blue things back.

The agents think of a way to "sort out" Spooky Spoon— send her a whole slew of colours. So, the Numberjacks put everyone's buddy blocks in the brain gain machine and everyone imagines colours. This makes Spooky change colour, but she can't decide which colour is best, so she flies away screaming.

The missing yellow and red items return, as does Four, and they recap the episode. In the Cosy Room, Three sorts her slidey shapes by colour, but a blue star ends up in the "yellow" section. She considers starting again, but Four puts it in place instead. Then, Five asks the viewers to find a red, yellow, and blue thing.

This episode provides examples of

  • Artistic License – Biology: Six believes in the old misconception that goldfish are very forgetful.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Five imagines Spooky taking some flowers and grass (which is petty), turning the sky white (which is weird but likely wouldn't hurt anyone) but then taking the sun (which would eventually kill everyone).
  • Chewing the Scenery: When the woman gets her car back, she hugs it.
  • Distressed Dude: Exaggerated— Four has to be rescued from being phased out of existence.
  • Evil Gloating: Spooky says, "Just try and stop me!" at one point.
  • I Just Want to Be Beautiful: Spooky Spoon wants the world to be less colourful so she doesn't "look boring".
  • Oh, Crap!: Just before being made disappear, Four realises he could be taken as he's blue.
  • Person as Verb: Four says, "I don't want to be Spooky Spooned again" ("spoon" can be a verb meaning to scoop something with a spoon or to hug or be hugged from below, but Four was using "Spooky Spooned" to mean "messed with by Spooky Spoon").
  • Say My Name: Four and Six shout, "Three!"
  • Speak in Unison: When Three doesn't let Four and Six take the credit for finding her toy, they shout her name in unison.
  • Subverted Catchphrase: Five says, "Just think what might happen!" instead of "Anything could happen!".
  • Weird Sun: Five imagines a sun with a smiley face.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Exaggerated for Spooky Spoon, who has no qualms about making Four (who's four years old, since Numberjack's numbers correspond with their ages) cease to exist.
