Airdate: February 22, 2012

Once again spying the mysterious falcon, Zane and the other ninja follow it into the woods (Kai, Jay and Cole falling behind) and to an abandoned lab in a large tree. Here Zane discovers the secret of his past and unlocks his true potential.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Big "NO!": Zane lets out a couple upon discovering his own blueprints.
  • Cerebus Call-Back: You know that line Zane had in "Home" in regards to not getting letters from his parents? Well, you're not getting them if your father figure has been dead for years.
  • Character Focus: As the first of four episodes focusing on the Ninja's true potentials, this episode focuses on Zane and his true origins.
  • Enemy Mine: Wu goes on a solo journey to find Garmadon in order to rescue Lloyd from Pythor.
  • Foreshadowing: Kai, astonished at Zane staying underwater for 10 minutes at the beginning, calls him "inhuman" as a figure of speech meaning "superhuman." The episode turns out to be Zane's Robotic Reveal.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: While Zane opening his chest is meant to serve as his Robotic Reveal, one can figure it out a little sooner because the blueprint he drops during his Big "NO!" moment has Zane himself on it.
  • Kill It with Ice: The Treehorns are defeated when Zane unlocks his True Potential, freezing their queen solid.
  • Mid-Season Twist: Zane being a robot halfway into Season 1 is one of the most well-known scenes of the show.
  • Mood Whiplash: After the shocking reveal of Zane being a robot, he flips on his "funny switch". Then we have a heartbreaking montage of Zane's past.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: Zane. The falcon is a ridiculously falcon robot.
  • Robotic Reveal: The falcon and Zane are actually robots.
  • Start of Darkness: It turns out that Lord Garmadon's Face–Heel Turn was caused by the Great Devourer biting him. Garmadon could not be good if he wanted, because evil literally flows through his veins.
  • This Explains So Much: In a way to lighten the mood, Jay explains that Zane being a robot explains why he's so weird. Zane then replies that it's because his "funny switch" was off.
  • True Companions: While the other Ninja are understandably shocked to find out Zane's a robot, they quickly get over it and accept Zane nonetheless.
  • Wham Episode: For Zane, and where do we begin?
    • We also learn Garmadon’s Start of Darkness. He was bitten by the Great Devourer, poisoning and turning him evil.
  • Wham Line: Kai: (to Zane) "You're...a robot?!"
  • Wham Shot:
    • Zane opening his chest to reveal that he's a robot.
    • As Wu confronts Garmadon, the camera zooms out and pans around the latter, revealing that he's now got four arms.
