Back in Ninjago City, Zane and Pixal hit the mean streets to track down Milton Dyer, only to discover that things are not what they seem.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Brief Accent Imitation: At the end of the episode, with Zane abducted by the Mechanic, Pixal decides to take a leaf from his book and go hard-boiled.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Zane keeps narrating his plan of attack before attacking. He has no clue as to how his opponent is able to block his every move.
  • The Cloudcuckoolander Was Right: Pixal is exasperated to realize Zane's loony behavior has somehow worked out in her favor.
  • Deliberately Monochrome: The majority of the episode is depicted in black and white, giving it a noir-esque look. Whenever Zane's narration is interrupted, the color comes back.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: At Dareth's bar, Zane and Pix are harassed by Fugidove's brother, despite having no idea who he's talking about.
  • Genre Savvy: Dareth figures the ninja have gone missing and that Zane and Pixal are looking for clues to undo this because "it happens a lot" with them.
  • Private Eye Monologue: Zane spends much of the episode doing one. He just hasn't got the hint it should be internal. Pix starts imitating it at the end.
  • Special Edition Title: The intro is given a monochrome style, like films in the 1930s and 1940s, along with an instrumental jazz remix of the theme song.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Pix is annoyed to find the Mechanic and Zane are thinking on the same wavelengths.
  • The Reveal: Unagami isn't Milton Dyer. He's the Prime Empire A.I. Dyer created, now self-aware.
  • Taught by Television: Before setting out, Zane downloaded every crime noir story he could get his hands on, and has become convinced this is how someone solves a mystery.
