Recap / Nine One One S 7 E 6 There Goes The Groom

Go To

After years of anticipation, Maddie and Chimney's long-awaited wedding day arrives; when the groom mysteriously vanishes, the 118 races against time to ensure he doesn't miss the most crucial day of his life.

Tropes:

  • Call-Back: All over, to "Chimney Begins" and the Doug Saga especially.
  • Determinator: Maddie is this, to the point of charging into the call center with Hen in her dress in an attempt to find Chimney.
    • Chimney is this too. Not even a viral brain infection is gonna stop him!
  • Easy Amnesia: The encephalitis that Chimney got infected with left him wandering the streets unsure of anything other than that he was supposed to be somewhere (his wedding). He nonetheless remembered how to treat people with emergency medical conditions and he remembered Maddie's psychotic first husband Doug to the point of hallucinating him. Most of his memories return quickly once he is brought to the hospital and given treatment. Except for what may now be a Riddle for the Ages, as he asks Maddie why people call him Chimney (something he never explained to anybody).
  • Lipstick Mark: Firefighter version. Tommy misses the wedding because he was on a fire call. When he comes the hospital, still in turnout gear and with his face covered in soot, Buck gives him a Big Damn Kiss. Which results in everybody noticing the obvious ring of soot around Buck's mouth when he and Tommy go to Chimney's room.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Was Chimney's dead brother Kevin helping him just another hallucination? Or did his ghost really show up, especially since the family had performed the traditional ancestral veneration not long before the encephalitis became severe? Kevin also explains that Doug was never really there, but he is because Chimney invited him.
  • Meet the In-Laws: Buck suggested to Tommy that he be his wedding date in the previous episode, and given it is his sister's wedding, this would be in effect. Unfortunately, there's a lack of groom getting in the way.
  • Runaway Bride: Gender-Inverted Trope in this case. Also, Chimney's disappearance is due to him suffering memory loss caused by encephalitis, rather than him fleeing from his wedding on purpose.
  • Shout-Out: To The Hangover.
  • Stag Party: Buck and Eddie have an extremely wild time at the party they throw for Chimney (who didn't want one). That Chimney didn't even show up did not prevent the party from making its way from the nightclub to Chimney's hotel suite. Which they didn't actually have a key for, but a drunken Eddie enthusiastically declares that they're firefighters and so he just breaks open the door.
  • Transparent Closet: Hen remarks to Karen that "It's about damned time" when she, like everyone else, notices the soot on Buck's mouth from him kissing Tommy. The only people who look surprised are Mr. & Mrs. Buckley.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Poor Chimney relives basically every trauma he's been through throughout the series, from the rebar incident, to Kevin's death, to Doug, who taunts his every move.
  • Wedding Episode: That of Maddie and Chimney. At least, if Chim can get there on time...
