Recap / 9-1-1 S4E12 "Treasure Hunt"

Go To

LA is thrown into chaos when a famous mystery writer dies, claiming that he has hidden a treasure chest somewhere within the city with $5 million dollars up for grabs.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • All for Nothing: The entire city got Gold Fever trying to find a dead author's buried treasure. But as the team finds out, the author wasn't really dead and there was no treasure to bury. Subverted given that the much abused assistant ended up getting the gold and flying out of the country.
  • Asshole Victim: The writer, an arrogant prick who causes chaos just to get inspiration and insults everyone around him when he dies for real of a heart attack. The team note that, on top of the numerous other mitigating factors regarding his accidental death, there's the fact that a jury won't be all that invested in prosecuting his killer.
  • Batman Gambit: The author put out a ton of publicity over 5 million dollars being buried somewhere in LA, even faking his own death, knowing that people are desperate and greedy enough to go looking for it.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: The writer at first seems benevolent and kind when he offers the buried treasure for his fans in his will, with his assistant hyping him up as well. But once Athena learns he's actually alive, he shows what an arrogant, greedy misanthrope he is, and the assistant admitted he always hated the guy (especially after seeing he wasn't even worth putting into his fake will).
  • Muse Abuse: The muse being the entire city of Los Angeles. The whole point of the buried treasure was to throw the city into chaos, with every act of greed and stupidity inspiring another chapter in the author's next book.
