TK and Carlos struggle to make themselves heard after Owen takes charge of planning their wedding. Marjan receives and answers a cry for help while on the road.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Marjan is about to proudly show Grant that Kiley is done with him and getting on the delivery truck she’d arranged to take her… only for it to drive off and reveal Kiley got cold feet and stayed behind.
  • Big Damn Heroes: After her first attempt to spirit Kiley away from Grant fails, Marjan tails the two of them on the road and is able to sneak onboard when they stop at a gas station. She then knocks him out with a fire extinguisher and gets him arrested.
  • Bridezilla: In this case, “Dad-zilla”, courtesy of Owen. When TK and Carlos attempt to coax him down with help from Andrea, he also ropes her into working with him.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • When TK admits that he needs Owen in his life to guide him through potential fatherhood, Owen cites his last two failed marriages, much like at the beginning of the pilot episode. He also comments about TK’s habit of leaving his tea bag in his mug, which was a common habit for Gwyn.
    • Andrea brings up her and Gabriel’s decade-long Stunned Silence about Carlos’ sexuality after he came out to them, which she deeply regrets not breaking earlier.
  • Domestic Abuse: Grant and Kiley present themselves as a giggly, easy-going couple on a road trip when Marjan finds them and their Winnebago on the side of the road… until the moments after Kiley gives Marjan her note about him threatening to kill her, and when she hesitates with running away. He later rebukes her for trying to flee and crying, belittles her, and blatantly ignores her request to make the volume of his music softer.
  • Facial Dialogue: With Owen shooting down most of their wedding plan ideas and substituting them with grander ones, the two fiancées exchange several exasperated glances at each other as soon as he suggests another idea.
  • Foreign-Language Tirade: Andrea launches into an outraged rant in Spanish once Carlos informs her that Owen wants to include a gluten-free wedding cake option.
  • From Bad to Worse: Played for Laughs with the cake tasting, as Owen wins Andrea over with the gluten-free-vegan cake sample, and the two of them align with their increasingly extravagant ideas for flower arrangements. Their sons are simply horrified and disappointed at this outcome, with Carlos even lampshading the turn of events.
    TK: …What just happened?
Carlos: Our worst nightmare, that’s what happened.
  • Secretly Selfish: TK thinks that Owen’s wedding planning is bordering on this. He’s not wrong that Owen’s ideas are essentially making the occasion his own, and not his son and son-in-law’s, but Owen defies this later on— he sincerely intended all of his own suggestions to be a possibly-final contribution for them both as TK might not need Owen in his life anymore.
  • Shout-Out:
    • When TK and Carlos approach Andrea for moral support, her introduction scene is shot akin to Corleone’s introduction in The Godfather.
    • Carlos paraphrases Yoda’s “Do or do not” remark about Owen’s will over their wedding cake choice.
    • TK compares Owen’s overplannings to Jack’s Character Death in Titanic (1997).
Owen: I’m aware that I went… shall we say, slightly overboard on my ideas.
TK: Slightly overboard? Leo went less overboard on the Titanic.
  • Stepford Smiler: Kiley reveals herself as this in her relationship with Grant.
