A youkai named Yobiko sneaks into the Fujiwaras's house to ask Natsume to find a youkai named Karikami who has the ability to restore paper so he may read an old water damaged letter he found in a shrine which he thinks may be from a human he used to speak to using his ability to mimic voices.

Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Arranged Marriage: Yobiko discovered that as the eldest son of a prominent family Takahiko was forced into one and it was the reason he stopped coming to meet Youko at the shrine.
  • Flashback: While Yobiko describes his interactions with the human woman Youko.
  • I Know Your True Name: The reason Yobiko approaches Natsume in order to find Karikami is because Karikami's name is in the book of friends so Natsume should be able to locate or call Karikami. Natsume returns the name exchange for Karikami restoring Yobiko's letter to readability.
  • Love Hurts: Yobiko was saddened to learn that even humans could not just marry whom they loved and was distressed when he realized Youko did not even know her beau was married. He then imitated Takahiko to speak with her and fled heartbroken when his deception was called out and he admitted it to her without even giving her a chance to respond.
  • Shrines and Temples: Yobiko used to spy on a human couple that met at one, and when the man stopped coming Yobiko hid inside the shrine and mimicked his voice to speak with Youko since she did not know that her boyfriend was no longer able to come meet her.
  • Voice Changeling: Yobiko can imitate any voice he hears, and can be heard and seen, by humans if he so chooses.
