Recap / Naomi 2022 S 1 E 13 Who Am I

Go To

Second half of the season finale. Naomi must face Brutus and his goons after they put her adult protectors in danger. Her friends join her in the fight.

  • Affably Evil: In comparison to his henchmen, Brutus seems genuinely affable.
  • Awful Truth: Brutus did not kill Naomi's birth parents - Greg and Jennifer did.
  • Beard of Evil: Brutus sports a bushy, grey one.
  • Becoming the Mask: Greg and Jennifer say that, despite what they did, they love Naomi.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Zumbado and Akira save Naomi from Brutus's counterattack.
  • Blow You Away: Dee uses his wings like this to dispatch Julian.
  • Brick Joke: During the party at the end, Anthony remarks that he is glad to be invited this time.
  • But Now I Must Go: Dee leaves at the end to save Qyeala.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Naomi's friends insist that they're a super team ready to help her fight the bad guys, ignoring the fact that none of them have superpowers or combat training except her. Dee lampshades this when they arrive to rescue the grown-ups with paintball guns.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Naomi easily dispatches the Assassin.
  • Cut Short: Another victim of The CW's mass cancellations in early 2022, Naomi becomes the second-shortest running DC live-action series (and the shortest CW-aired DC show) at 13 episodes, second only to NBC's Powerless with 12 episodes.
  • Damsel in Distress: Qyeala is being held at Gaolus, a prison planet, as per Julian.
  • Disownment: After finding out the truth at the end, Naomi flies away, telling Jennifer and Greg not to come looking for her.
  • Hope Bringer: Dee says that Naomi gave him back hope. She is also shown to revive the vegetation of Earth-29 with her powers.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Greg and Jennifer try to justify their murder of Naomi's birth parents by nobody believing them about Naomi being able to fix the Tear.
  • Karma Houdini: Unfortunately, Naomi is not yet powerful enough to defeat Brutus and is forced to retreat.
  • Last Episode, New Character: While Brutus has been mentioned before, he finally appears in the flesh. Also literally an example of this trope given that the series did not get renewed for a second season.
  • Lured into a Trap: As pretty much anybody expects, Julian and the Assassin kidnap Naomi's family and friends to lure her into a trap.
  • Meaningful Name: The prison planet is named Gaolus. Gaol is an older word for "jail."
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Naomi develops the ability to fly.
  • No-Sell: Brutus is able to cut Naomi once but, when she powers up, his powers can't faze her.
  • Oh, Crap!: Naomi's reaction when Brutus's dagger makes her bleed.
  • Power Nullifier: Brutus's team is able to rig a room that nullifies Akira, Zumbado and Dee's powers. Naomi's friends deactivate it in a team effort.
  • Red Herring: Dee gets initially suspected of having betrayed Naomi's birth parents due to him speaking to Mac.
  • The Reveal: Jennifer and Greg killed Naomi's birth parents.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Since Naomi cannot be hurt, Brutus's henchmen target her friends and family.
  • Shout-Out: Almost too many too count.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: Subverted initially, as Naomi's friends still help her save her family and other friends despite Naomi speeding off. Played straight however when she faces Brutus.
  • Unseen No More: After being The Ghost for much of the season, Brutus finally makes his appearance.
  • We Can Rule Together: Brutus's offer to Naomi. She declines, of course.
  • Wham Shot: The vision of Naomi's parents being murdered and the killers removing their hoods to reveal themselves as Greg and Jennifer.
  • You Killed My Father: Brutus gives Naomi's vision clarity, leading in her to find out that Greg and Jennifer killed her birth parents.
  • You Monster!: Naomi calls Brutus a monster.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Akira stays behind to delay Brutus. While Zumbado and Dee believe that she is dead, Naomi refuses to give up on her and plans to rescue her.
