Recap / Nancy Drew S 1 E 11 The Phantom Of Bonny Scot

Go To

When Nancy's quest to clear Carson's name clashes with Owen's pursuit of justice for the victims of the Bonny Scot, she'll have to decide just how far she's willing to go to get her dad out of jail

Tropes:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Bess starts having some doubts right away when Aunt Diana starts laying out the ground rules for being a Marvin.
Diana: Are you worried about your girlfriend, Lisbeth? Don't be. Marvins have flings with drivers, poolboys, girls, your mother certainly did. But Marvins don't marry drivers.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Nancy plants one on Owen after Everett's arrest.
  • Burner Phones: Celia uses one to call a contact and tell them to silence Carson.
  • Catapult Nightmare: How Nancy's dream opens.
  • Consummate Professional: Holding onto old files? Responsible, something a counselor should do. Keeping them unsecured in boxes under the stairs? Not so much.
  • Emergency Stash: The saltwater dripping off the painting in the middle of the episode turns out to have been pointing at a hidden compartment which contains the stolen notes Karen kept on Lucy.
  • Erotic Dream: The episode opens with a sexy dream between Nancy and Owen that morphs into an emotional reunion with Nick that morphs into a Jump Scare with Lucy.
  • Everything Sounds Sexier in French: Lisbeth admits she has a thing for British accents, encouraging Bess to embrace both her goals and her past. And it really works for Lisbeth.
  • Gone Horribly Right: George's and Nick's party idea is a huge success, so the owner gets an offer on the restaurant and warns George she's going to take it.
  • He Knows Too Much:
    • Bashirr has proof that the ship was sabotaged, but to avoid being killed by the Hudsons has been keeping himself under the radar ever since he started living in Horseshoe Bay, Maine.
    • The last scene of the episode is Celia making a phone call and telling someone to silence Carson permanently, with the bonus of also threatening Nancy. She then tosses the phone in the ocean.
  • I "Uh" You, Too: After Lisbeth admits she's falling in love with Bess, Bess says, "I'm ... sort of... falling, too."
  • Love Confession: Lisbeth admits that she's falling in love with Bess.
  • My Greatest Failure: Bashiir tried and failed to save the crew of the Bonnie Scot. His guilt is all the worse since he's been haunted by their ghosts ever since the seance.
  • Papa Wolf: Invoked by Nancy to get her dad off his ass.
Nancy: If you won't go after the Hudsons to save yourself, maybe you'll do it to save me.
Carson: Listen, you're taking your life in your hands!
Nancy: No, I'm putting it in yours.
  • Properly Paranoid: Bashiir was terrified to come forward, claim asylum, and tell the truth of the sinking of the Bonny Scot because he knows how people respond to people from war-torn countries (the word "Somali") or for being undocumented.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Nancy finds a six-foot wide portrait of the Hudsons upstairs in their home, with Everett on the left, Celia standing next to him, a three foot gap, then Ryan on the right.
  • Sole Survivor: Bashiir was the only person to survive the wreck of the Bonny Scot. No one knew he was a survivor of the wreck because he was a stowaway and no one ever knew he was on board.
  • Succession Crisis: Ryan sets one off when he tells his mother that his father has led the family in the wrong direction and that he should take the throne rather than help his father out of prison.
  • Survivor Guilt: Bashiir since he fled his war torn country and while coming to the USA ended up being the only survivor of Bonny Scot sinking. Since the Drew Crew performed a seance three weeks ago Continuity Nod (The Path of Shadows) Bashiir has been haunted by the crew of the Bonny Scot.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Faced with a choice between saving her father on the one hand and saving Bashiir and taking down Everett on the other, Nancy chooses justice.
