Tropes in this episode:

  • The Cameo: After having been the main antagonists of the preceding episodes, the Grandis Gang only appears briefly at the top of the episode to establish what happened to them after escaping the Abraham.
  • Covert Pervert: Once aboard the Nautilus, Jean can't help trying to sneak a peek at Nadia in the shower. She reacts by angrily throwing a bar of soap at him.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: The lighting for the Nautilus bridge during and after combat conditions is different here compared to what we will see in subsequent episodes. There are also subtle design differences to the bridge following this episode (such as changes to Eiko's sonar station).
  • Foreshadowing:
    • This episode is the first, but by no means the last time that Jean's fascination with the Nautilus and its technology will cause problems for Nemo and company.
    • In their sole scene, Grandis complains about never being able to pick the right men. While it's played for laughs (replete with Sanson being kicked overboard), this lament ends up becoming crucial to not only Grandis' time aboard the Nautilus, but also her backstory.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jean's exploration of the Nautilus accidentally alerts the Garfish that they're being tracked.
  • Secret War: After the setup from last episode, this episode marks the formal introduction of the secret conflict between Nemo and Gargoyle (though the latter won't appear for another two episodes).
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Already irritable after the Abraham left them behind, Grandis is in no mood for Sanson's dandy routine.
  • Wham Line: "Bon Voyage, dear Princess." The closing line reveals that Electra knows, or at least realized, who Nadia was when she and Jean were brought aboard. It's also the first hint that the show's seeming two Myth Arcs are actually two sides of the same coin.
