Hung Out To Dry
During a training exercise, a Marine's parachute fails to open and he crashes into a parked car where two teenagers are making out. The NCIS team heads to the scene and have to determine whether the Marine's death was accidental or a murder.
- Absence of Evidence: Gibbs realises something when Kate guesses that the victim might have been given a dirty chute rather than referring to it as a sabotaged one like they've been investigating. He asks Abby to recheck the victim's reserve chute which had nothing wrong with it...nor the dirt and damage one would expect after crashing into a tree and an SUV with it. This leads to the discovery that the victim's sabotaged reserve chute was switched by a fellow Marine for his working one after the crash.
- Bait-and-Switch Comment: The girlfriend says that if his date continues what he's doing, she'll scream. Cue Victim of the Week slamming through their roof and squirting blood on her. That gets her to scream.
- Chute Sabotage: What happened to the dead Marine.
- Date Rape Averted: The girl's date starts getting too physical with her when a falling marine smashes through the SUV.
- Dude, Where's My Respect?: Tony is annoyed that the news report on the case refers to NCIS as "military authorities."
- Friend to All Children: Gibbs is incredibly gentle with the dead marine's son. He even finishes building the kid's treehouse.
- Manly Tears: Gibbs' advice to the boy who doesn't want to be seen crying at his father's funeral."Never be ashamed of tears, buddy."
