Recap / My Little Pony: Make Your Mark: S6 E1 "The Isle of Scaly"

Go To

The Mane Six travel to the Dragonlands to warn the dragons about Opaline.

Tropes:

  • Balloonacy: Izzy breaks the Marestream's crash landing by using several large balloons as a makeshift crash pad.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Opaline is able to use the Dragonstone to brainwash two dragons into loyal servants, using their magic to amplify their own.
  • Breath Weapon: All dragons have different magic associated with their fire breath. Spike can transport things with his flame, others control various elements like air or water, and Sparky's transformation magic is said to be especially rare.
  • Call-Back:
    • Once again, Pipp's song, "Everything is Gonna Be Okay" plays while the group are flying in the Marestream.
    • The dragons have the same glow on their scales that Sparky did when he touched the Together Tree in Maretime Bay. They refer to it as a "shimmer".
    • Spike's position as the Dragon Lord is a nod to the Friendship is Magic episode "Gauntlet of Fire", where he briefly held the role before passing it on.
  • Character Witness: Where the other dragons are wary of the ponies, Spike having been raised by them is trusting of their intentions.
  • Continuity Nod: Misty recalls that the last time they visited the Isle of Scaly, they used a magic door.
  • Cuteness Proximity: With the exception of Blaize, the dragons find Sparky adorable.
  • The Gadfly: Spike. When Sunny asks if she can call him by name, he responds that it would be weird if she called him "Fred" instead.
  • Kid Hero All Grown-Up: Sunny is amazed to actually meet Spike, the baby dragon in the stories her dad used to tell her, and see he has grown up into an adult dragon now.
  • Large and in Charge: Spike is slightly bigger than his fellow dragons, and much older than all of them.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: Lava and Jade's eyes turn a glowing purple once they are put under Opaline's control.
  • Non-Mammalian Hair: The female dragons have hair on their heads, while the males are bald.
  • Pun:
    • Izzy remarks "...If it would behoove us...".
    • Hitch jokes that there's no reason to let things "drag-on".
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Spike, the Dragon Lord, is much quicker to trust the ponies since he grew up among them.
  • Reluctant Ruler: Blaize identifies Sunny as the leader of the group despite her insisting otherwise.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Briefly invoked by Opaline while she gloats about her plans.
Opaline: Without their cutie mark magic, they cannot shine. Then their unity magic will wilt and die on the vine.
  • Rousing Speech: Sunny gives one to the dragons to help convince them to help.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Luxxe offers for herself and Leaf to stay with Izzy, Misty, and Pipp as they tend to the downed Marestream, and not because they've been asked by Blaize to keep an eye on them...
  • The Un-Reveal: Once the heroes ask Spike the series-spanning questions about what about what happened to ancient Equestria, his only recently awakening from century long sleep means he can't yet recall anything much beyond what the ponies and audiences already know.
  • Villain Song: Opaline sings one (fittingly titled "Villain") while brainwashing Lava and Jade.
  • You Are Too Late: By the time the Mane Six reach the Dragonlands, Opaline has already been there and absconded with two dragons to further her plans.
