Recap / My Little Pony Equestria Girls Overpowered

Go To

Written by: Gillian M. Berrow

Walking through the halls of CHS, Sunset finds her empathy powers are letting her hear everyone's thoughts. The rest of the group has been having their powers act up too, and they wonder why. Rainbow Dash rushes in bragging about how great her super speed is to get around, and the geodes begin glowing. Twilight deduces that since the seven of them are connected, overuse of them can create a magical feedback effect in all of them, amplifying their powers. The key is to use their powers in moderation.

Zephyr Breeze enters and asks Rainbow to the mall. She makes to speed away but the other girls give her a glare, and Rainbow shrinks away from Zephyr at normal speed. Later, Sunset finds that her empathy has subsided, much to her relief.

Tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Like with their pony versions, Zephyr Breeze tries flirting with Rainbow Dash, who doesn't want anything to do with him.
  • Alternate Self: Zephyr Breeze's human counterpart makes his debut in this short.
  • The Beastmaster: With her powers acting up, Fluttershy finds herself casually followed around by dozens of animals.
  • Disapproving Look: The girls give a collective one to Rainbow Dash after Twilight explains she is the one responsible for their geodes being overcharged.
    Rainbow Dash: He he... oopsies.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: The result of Applejack's power getting boosted; she accidentally tears the door off her locker, then crumples it while trying to shove it back in place.
  • Facepalm: Fluttershy's reaction to her brother's usual antics is to double-facepalm.
  • Having a Blast: Pinkie Pie makes an apple explode, to her confusion. Apparently, her amplified power can even affect fructose, instead of just refined sugar.
  • Juggle Fu: After taking a bite of her sandwich, Rainbow Dash doesn't bother taking it with her when seeking mustard: she's fast enough that it doesn't even have time to fall before she's back.
  • Motor Mouth: Rainbow talks extremely fast with her Super-Speed powers amplified.
  • Mundane Utility: Deconstructed; Rainbow's casual use of her super-speed is what's causing the other girls to lose control of their own powers, and is obviously affecting her, too. Moderation is the word of the day.
  • Power Incontinence: The central plot point is that the girls aren't sure how to keep their powers in check now that they're getting stronger.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Synchronization: It's established here that the girls' geodes are linked and that one of them using their powers excessively boosts theirs as well as the others'.
  • Telepathy: Sunset’s empath powers escalate to this as a result of Power Incontinence, and she’s not handling it well, trying to block out thoughts with earmuffs (unsuccessfully) and getting to see all of her friends’ experiences without attempting to.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: The come away is that the geodes have to be used responsibly.
