Recap / My Little Pony Equestria Girls Costume Conundrum

Go To

While Sunset Shimmer, Fluttershy, Rarity, and Applejack hang out at Sunset Shimmer's house, they all four receive a message inviting them to a costume party at Bulk Biceps' house. However, Fluttershy is nervous. Sunset tries to help her feel better by telling her that they all will go to the party. However, Fluttershy reveals that she is nervous because she doesn't know what costume to wear at the party. Sunset, Rarity, and Applejack then each offer to help her, but Flittershy doesn't know which one to choose.

If Fluttershy chooses Sunset Shimmer, they search for a few costumes at Sunset's closet, eventually choosing an alien costume that Bulk Biceps mistakes for a real monster, much to Sunset and Fluttershy's amusement. If Fluttershy chooses Rarity, the latter uses Fluttershy as a model to create a beautiful costume that she ends up liking... only for Rarity to reveal that the costume is for herself. However, she does offer Fluttershy some of her old costumes, all of whom turn out to be beautiful.

If Fluttershy chooses Applejack, she offers Fluttershy a two-person Pony costume. When they show up at the party, Rarity assumes Fluttershy was the rear end of the costume and is saddened over Applejack seemingly forcing her to be the rear end. However, Fluttershy reveals that she is actually the front half (and that she finds it relaxing due to nobody seeing her) and Applejack is the rear end. Sunset, jarred by the costume, then accidentally drops her drink.

Tropes:

  • Continuity Nod:
    • In the title card for the episode, Fluttershy is seen as both herself and a vampire.
    • At the start of the episode, Fluttershy can be seen playing the same videogame she and Sunset Shimmer were playing in "Game Stream".
    • Sunset's guitar can be seen in the background.

     Tropes for Sunset Shimmer's ending
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Among the many objects that Sunset Shimmer throws out off her closet is the diary through which she communicates with Princess Twilight.
    • One of the potential disguises Sunset shows to Fluttershy for her to wear are some vampire fangs, which she ironically dismisses because she couldn't "picture [her] as a bat".
  • Fish People: Sunset's costume for Fluttershy ends up being a cross between this and an octopus. Impressively, the costume has four eyes that all move in sync with Fluttershy's.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Among the objects Sunset throws off her closet are three horse shoes.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Bulk Biceps thinks Fluttershy's costume is a real monster despite being at a costume party. Even worse, when the costume's head falls off and exposes Fluttershy underneath, he somehow concludes that the monster mutated into Fluttershy.

     Tropes for Rarity's ending
  • Bait-and-Switch: At first, it seems that Rarity made a beautiful costume for Fluttershy... only to reveal its actually for herself. But, while the costumes she offers to Fluttershy are old, they are still beautiful.
  • Swear Jar: Zig-zagged and played for laughs with Rarity. It is revealed she needs to put a coin in a jar every time she says "darling".
Rarity: (gasps) Rarity, darling, you've outdone yourself!
Fluttershy: (singsong) Rarity... (holds out jar)
Rarity: (sighs) I said "darling", didn't I? Ohhh...

     Tropes for Applejack's ending
  • Noodle Incident: According to Applejack, she wanted to wear the Pony costume with Sunset Shimmer a long time ago, but she refused. It is unknown when or why Applejack wanted her and Sunset to use it.
  • Take That!: Applejack and Fluttershy's costume resembles a G3 Pony, and Sunset Shimmer is slightly horrified by it.
