Recap / My Little Pony 'n Friends E35: "Mish Mash Melee"

Go To

Fizzy, Wind Whistler, Shady, and Gusty are playing a game of ball — referred to as polo, but in appearance a fairly generic ball-kicking thing — until, against game rules, Fizzy uses her unicorn magic to grab the ball. Her bubble doesn't respond to her attempts to bring it down, however, and floats away. The ponies chase after it and soon find themselves in a nearby woodland, the Mystificent Forest. Wind Whistler recalls old stories about creatures that live in and care for the forest, unnerving the others. They stumble across a large rock and, after messing with it, find that it hides a secret entrance into a series of large underground chambers home to the Dell Dwellers, the aforementioned nature-tenders.

The Dwellers are fairly genial sorts, but as they explore the ponies upset a large barrel labeled "Balance". Out of the barrel comes a swarm of colorful, raindrop-shaped creatures known as frazzits, which reverse the personality of every creature they touch. The Dell Dwellers go from quiet and hardworking to being reckless hooligans who mess around with the delicate balance of nature they previously maintained. The ponies undergo similar transformations: Wind Whistler becomes excitable and carefree, Shady brave and assertive, Gusty timid and agreeable, and Fizzy clear-headed and analytical. She quickly takes charge of the situation and sets about getting the others to put the frazzits back in their barrel by having Gusty blow wind at them to gather them in one spot, scooping them up in her bubbles and having Shady punch them down into the barrel.

Once the barrel is filled up, Fizzy realizes that it had also been knocked upside down and puts it right side up again. As soon as this happens, the balance of things is restored and everyone's personalities put back into place — the Dell Dwellers immediately set to work undoing the damage they caused, and Fizzy goes back to her old scatterbrained self.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Beneath the Earth: The Dell Dwellers live in a system of spacious caves beneath the Mystificent Forest, where they handcraft natural objects to then be seeded in the surface world.
  • Bottle Episode: The episode only has four ponies (Fizzy, Wind Whistler, Shady, and Gusty) and is set in a single location.
  • Enchanted Forest: The Mystificent Forest is shrouded in thick fog and home to magical beings.
  • Painting the Frost on Windows: The Dell Dwellers are responsible for shaping and maintaining every part of the natural world, from carving and smoothing rounded river rocks to germinating acorns.
  • Personality Swap: The frazzits, once released, invert everyone's personalities. The sedate and hardworking dell dwellers start messing around and interfering with the natural cycles they protected, the serious and responsible Wind Whistler becomes carefree and fun-loving, the scatterbrained Fizzy becomes serious and responsible, the pessimistic and depressed Shady becomes brave and confident, and the brash and headstrong Gusty becomes timid and scared.
