Recap / My Little Pony 'n Friends E33: "The Magic Coins 3"

Go To

As Megan, Puck, Spike and the ponies are dangling over a precipice and at Niblik's nonexistent mercy, they try to buy their way back onto solid ground by offering to get Niblik a better treasure than he lost. Megan adds in the caveat that he'll undo the terrible wishes they made if they do so; everyone else has a spot of justifiable panic at this, but Niblik's greed outweighs his animosity and he agrees. Megan tries to get payment in advance, as Dream Valley will turn into a desert if something isn't done soon. Since Niblik already lives in a desert, this fails to impress.

This leaves the heroes with the question of how to find a treasure that will satisfy Niblik's greed. Puck suggests three: the Heart of Fire, a giant ruby held in the crater of Fire Mountain; the Golden Rose in the Haunted Garden; and the emerald Idol in the ruins of the City of the Ancients. The heroes duly head out to retrieve them all, reasoning that getting all three will improve their chances of impressing Niblik.

In Dream Valley, Whizzer's pond has dried up by the time the group reaches it, and all other water sources are likewise dry. Danny and the ponies decide to bring the seaponies to Paradise Estate in the hope of finding water there.

Meanwhile, Spike and Heart Throb reach the Haunted Garden, a hedge maze protected by living topiaries. Spike's fire breath manages to hold the animated plants at bay long enough for them to make off with the flower, but once they reach Niblik's house it turns out that he's deathly allergic to roses.

The second group, counting Puck, Galaxy and Buttons, reaches the City of the Ancients, a desolate temple complex filled with booby traps. Galaxy winks past them to get the emerald idol, but activates a pressure plate next to it that, together with the others coming to help her, results in multiple traps being triggered. The idol is damaged and, on being brought to Niblik, crumbles into dust.

Megan, Fizzy and Wind Whistler reach Fire Mountain, and find the Heart of Fire on a pedestal in the middle of the lake of lava in its crater. Wind Whistler can't fly to it due to the strong air currents rising from the molten rock, so Fizzy uses her still-enhanced bubbles to carry it across. As she struggles to complete the trip, Megan and Wind Whistler try to cross the remaining distance, with Megan riding the pegasus to allow her to focus on flying while Megan grabs the gem. They manage to get it, but the winds slam them down on a narrow ledge on the caldera's wall, which is crumbling away at a worrying rate.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Acrophobic Bird: When Niblik is holding the drawbridge open with the heroes hanging from its edges, it seemingly doesn't occur to any of the pegasi involved that they can just fly instead of hanging helplessly over a precipice.
  • All for Nothing: The ponies' dangerous quests to retrieve the legendary treasures turn out to be entirely fruitless, as Niblik rejects the first treasure and the second breaks into pieces.
  • Cliffhanger: Literally so. The episode ends with Megan and Wind Whistler perched on a narrow ledge above a lake of lava, with thermal updrafts too strong for Wind Whistler to fly in and their perch rapidly crumbling beneath their feet.
  • Convection, Schmonvection: Zig-zagged. The lava of Fire Mountain does produce strong thermal updrafts, which interfere with flying, but these act as perfectly regular wind otherwise. Wind Whistler and Megan experience no heat-related discomfort at all, either when buffeted by the air rising directly from the lava or when almost falling directly into the stuff.
  • Death Course: The City of the Ancients features a classic ancient ruins version, with a long corridor whose floor is riddled with pressure plates set to trigger falling nets, showers of falling rocks, and a lowering ceiling.
  • Gilligan Cut: When Spike and Heart Throb retrieve the rose, they confidently announce that even Niblik will love it. Cut to Niblik saying he hates it.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: When Megan starts dictating terms to the guy holding everyone over a deep pit, Heart Throb asks her if she's slipped her bridle.
  • Plot Allergy: Niblik is terribly allergic to roses, which very inconveniently for the heroes nixes any value their first treasure, a magic rose, might have for him.
