Recap / My Little Pony 'n Friends E28: "The Return of Tambelon 3"

Go To

Outside of Tambelon, the remaining free people of Dream Valley try to figure out a way to stop Grogar. The flutter pony who snuck into Tambelon earlier remembers that Grogar's bell glows whenever he uses magic, and they conclude that it must be the source of his magic. They decide to steal it from him by luring him outside the city walls, in order to do which they make a Bray-shaped costume and splice a message on Danny's tape recorder from a recording they take of Bray speaking. This plan works without a hitch at first, and they successfully trick Grogar into heading out alone and into an ambush. A problem arises, however, when they realize that this means that they have to fight the ram at close quarters, and he proceeds to wipe the floor with them and capture a few more ponies in the bargain.

After a cut to the prisoners trying and failing to find a way out of the dungeons, the episode returns to the rebels outside Dream Valley. This time, they decide to capture and interrogate a troggle. Their prisoner, named Drog, tells them that Grogar conquered the troggles long ago and that they want freedom, and offers to help them out. Drog also tells them that they're running out of time, as Grogar will banish their captured friends to the Realm of Darkness at midnight, and leads them through a secret passage into Tambelon...

... and right into a trap, with Grogar waiting for them.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Badass Boast: When they lure Grogar out of the city and into an ambush, the ponies expect Grogar to be at least intimidated. He disabuses them of this notion by boasting that they definitely did not get him surrounded — he has them right where he wants them.
Danny: Give up, Grogar! We've got you surrounded!
Grogar: He he! You're wrong, boy — I've got you surrounded!
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Grogar again proves much too strong for the heroes to defeat directly, and even when they manage to ambush him he routs them in seconds and captures a few of his would-be captors.
  • Darkest Hour: The heroes' multiple plans have all failed spectacularly, they have all been captured by Grogar's forces, and he's started a ritual to banish them to the Realm of Darkness.
  • Didn't Think This Through: In an attempt to steal Grogar's bell, the heroes lured him out of Tambelon and surrounded him. Unfortunately, they didn't take into account the possibility that he may be more powerful than any of them could handle.
  • Fake Defector: At the end of the episode, it seems like Drog the rebellious troggle lied to the heroes about his intentions and led them into a trap. In the next episode, this is subverted when it's revealed that he was entirely sincere, but was himself sold out to Grogar.
