Recap / My Little Pony 'n Friends E23: "Bright Lights 3"

Go To

On Grayvale's outskirts, the angry mob is defused when Knight-Shade's mother arrives and disperses it. After a tearful reunion, he announces that Erebus' reign of terror has ended and the group heads to the cloud wizard's mansion near town. There, Erebus and Zeb see what they think is Knight-Shade leading more hapless lambs to the umbral slaughter and, after a quick Villain Song, head out to meet the delegation.

When the two groups meet, Knight-Shade announces that he's no longer in Erebus' service and demands he return all the shadows he stole. Erebus refuses and attempts to browbeat his former minion back into service. When this fails, a fight breaks out that quickly turns into a complex chase through and around the mansion as the heroes try to take the shadow-stealing satchel, Zeb tries to steal it back, and the heroes try to avoid Erebus. The fight takes a sour note when Zeb steals Galaxy's shadow and feeds it to his master, and the heroes are forced to flee and regroup.

On the edge of Grayvale, Megan realizes Erebus' weakness: he's dependent on his device to steal shadows and runs on finite power without it, growing smaller and weaker as he uses up his stolen might. Thus, to defeat him, they need to keep him moving and tire him out. At the mansion, Erebus himself is quite aware of this issue and demands Zeb find more shadows to make up for the power he lost in the fight. When Molly and Lofty are sent out as a scouting party and the former is caught by Erebus' minions, Zeb sees a chance to do just that and gleefully advances on his prisoners, satchel in hand…

This episode contains examples of:

  • Cast from Stamina: All of Erebus' powers are this and the only means he has of recharging is to steal more shadows. Thus, while he's very powerful, prolonged battles aren't his strong suit.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Molly strung up and helpless in a rope trap, with Zeb approaching and ready to take her shadow.
  • Villain Song: "There's Nothing Quite Like Shadows", where Zeb and Erebus sing about how much they like stealing shadows and anticipate doing this to the heroes.
