Recap / My Hero Academia S2E10 "Shoto Todoroki: Origin"

Go To

Izuku and Todoroki begin their match. Izuku, while still trying to win, is attempting to get Todoroki to use his left side so they can both battle at their full power. As Todoroki fights on, more of his past is revealed through his thoughts. He remembers his mother saying it was okay to use his left side because he wanted to be a hero. So Izuku fights Todoroki who is using both sides. Cementoss and Midnight attempt to stop the match before the two deal their final attacks but to no avail. Izuku is thrown out of bounds and Todoroki moves on.

Tropes:

  • Animation Bump: The finale of the fight between Midoriya and Todoroki gets a rather noticeable animation quality hike. It's rather breathtaking.
  • Broken Smile: Todoroki sports one when he activates his fire side, feeling a mixture of audacity and ease when he did what Midoriya asked of him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Shoto's flashback reveals that he has undergone harsh training by his father to master his Quirk, bordering to the point of blatant abuse and isolation from the rest of his family. The final straw came when his mom instinctively, but accidentally, throws boiling water at him, troubled by both his and Enji's resemblance. After she is admitted to a psychiatric ward, Shoto vows to never use the fire half of his Quirk. It took the near end of his match with Izuku to set him straight.
  • Finishing Move: Both ends — Todoroki unleashes the full brunt of both his fire and ice sides in a massive attack, and Midoriya uses One For All in all his limbs to get in close and smash Todoroki's face. The impact of these are lessened by Midnight and Cementoss trying to stop the match.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Shoto has been holding back his "Fire Side" in combat to spite his father Endeavor, who had abused him and his family for years. Midoriya tells him to start treating his full Quirk as his own instead of his father's, and take the fight seriously.
  • Harmless Freezing: Todoroki manages to gets some ice on Midoriya's arm at close range, which immobilizes the arm and causes pain but doesn't seem to inflict any real damage.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Todoroki breaks out his fire side when Midoriya's epiphany gets through to him, and he's pissed.
  • Not So Stoic: After Midoriya switches his primary goal from winning the match to getting Todoroki to use his fire, his provocations start to wear down Todoroki's patience and determination not to.
  • No-Sell: For the first time in this arc, someone has a sufficient answer to Todoroki's ice barrages... though this requires Midoriya to Self-Harm each time.
  • Slasher Smile: Endeavor grins from ear-to-ear when Todoroki breaks out his fire.
  • Underdogs Never Lose: Midoriyra takes a subverted approach on this trope as he doesn't hold anything back. Unfortunately, helping to inspire Todoroki to give it his all costs Midoriya the match.
  • Wham Line:
Midoriya: It's yours! Your Quirk, not his!
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Midoriya tears into Todoroki when he realizes the latter is shivering because of his own ice and is still refusing to use his flame powers just to defy his father Endeavor. Midoriya points out that all of the other students are trying their best and giving everything they've got to win; Todoroki deliberately holding back like that is an insult. Midoryia tells him the Half-Hot/Half-Cold Quirk is his alone, not his father's.
