Recap / My Daemon S 1 E 1 The Grave Journey

Go To

Young Kento starts raising a tiny daemon with remarkable powers and names her Anna. But not everyone takes kindly to his new companion.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Asshole Victim: When the bounty hunter chasing after Kento and Anna encounters the nun who had been harassing the boy and his mother for keeping Anna and reported Anna to the authorities who issued the bounty in the first place, he responds to her disparaging him for his occupation by having Casper psychologically torture her by turning first her outer garments, then her flesh and muscles, invisible.
  • Cutting the Knot: When searching for Kento and Anna proves too difficult, the bounty hunter simply has his Daemon turn every single building and other obstacle in the direct vicinity invisible, rendering Kento and Anna with nothing to hide behind.
  • The Dog Bites Back: The bounty hunter that hunts Kento and Anna has a Daemon of his own named Casper, whom he controls through a shock collar. Once Kento removes the collar, Casper turns on his master and devours him.
  • Invisibility: The one-eyed, jellyfish-like Daemon, named Casper, has the ability to turn itself and everything it touches invisible.
  • Mama Bear: Kento’s mom is very protective towards his son, so much so that she takes a knife from the bounty hunter meant for Kento, paying with her life in the process.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Kento's mom sees no harm in her son having a Daemon as a pet. She is unique in this considering the general opinion of Daemons. Of course, considering Kento's condition, it is likely she put up with Anna because she wants Kento to be happy for what little time he may have left.
  • Show-and-Tell Antics: The episode starts with Kento bringing a baby Daemon, which he names her Anna, in a show-and-tell, while explaining to his class how he met her and decided to take her home to study her growth out of innocent curiosity. Unfortunately for him, because of Daemons’ bad rap, he accidentally freaked out the entire class, and became a bullying target as result.
  • Would Hurt a Child: The bounty hunter's first strategy for acquiring Anna is to stage a hit-and-run with an invisible truck, only Anna's quick action saving Kento and three other boys. Throughout the chase he shows absolutely no concern for the potential of hurting or killing Kento in the process, and after a cornered Kento fights back he becomes enraged and actively declares his intention to kill the boy (and when he gets close enough to do so, rather than just stab Kento immediately he seems to take sadistic pleasure in beating him up first).
  • Your Days Are Numbered: It’s established in this episode that the mark on Kento’s face actually contains a Daemon particle, and if said particle hatches into a Daemon, Kento would die in the process. Indeed, the doctor says that the possibility of Kento reaching adulthood is rather slim.
