An old flame of Brackenreid comes to him when her daughter, or rather their daughter, is in danger.
- Cool Teacher: Nomi's teacher at the secretarial school, Mr. Jenkins, views her as his brightest student, doesn't display the bigotry of so many middle-class white people of the era, and helped the police look for Nomi after she disappeared.
- Disappeared Dad: Brackenreid never knew that Sarah was pregnant when she left him due to fears about Black Gal on White Guy Drama destroying any hope they had of being a normal family.
- Obviously Evil: Out of the many people Brackenreid talks with, pretty much the only person who doesn't praise Nomi for being a brilliant and friendly person is an openly bigoted creep who is later revealed to have tried to rape her and drove her into hiding.
