Written By: Donald Ross
Directed By: Anthony Pullen Shaw

The owner of a new, hot fitness club in Cabot Cove has secrets that lead to murder.

Tropes:

  • Cheating with the Milkman: The women who keep booking private sessions with Wayne are implied (or at least believed) to be this, especially when the private sessions are in the female patron's house while the husband is away.
  • Con Man: Fred Keppard and Wayne were pulling this off for years before Wayne quit and tried to go legit. Fred was trying to pull a real estate scam of sorts with Eve (tricking her into investing a large sum of money to a property of lesser value and then pocketing the money, as well as trying to steal information on other people he could scam) when he got killed.
  • Chick Magnet: Wayne wasn't really sleeping with his patrons, merely flirting with them to encourage them to sign up for lifetime gym memberships and expensive health drinks.
  • Dark Secret: Wayne keeps his marriage to Betty secret even after he's arrested, because he fears that it'll destroy his business if his female patrons find out he's not single. Rightfully so, as it turns out.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Jessica walks Eve back to her house after the police are done with the crime scene, and she mistakes Deputy Floyd for Sheriff Metzger through the window. This leads her to realize that the killer could have been standing outside and might not have been after Fred Keppard.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • The female patrons of Wayne's Gym swear to their jealous husbands that their interests in Wayne are purely professional. But when they learn that Wayne is actually married, they are livid and want to cancel their gym membership.
    • The women were all quick to defend Wayne against "the stupid Sheriff" Metzger who arrested him for murder. But when they learn he's married, they are all too eager to consider the possibility that he was the murderer.
  • Lampshaded Double Entendre:
    • On their first meeting, Wayne tells Jessica that he knows all about her since she was just in his bedroom last night. When Jessica and Eve exchange confused looks (with Eve's also looking at Jessica as if to imply that she thinks Jess is Not So Above It All after all), Wayne clarifies that he meant that he was reading one of Jessica's novels in bed last night.
    • Despite knowing that Fred Keppard wasn't having any sexual liaisons with Eve Simpson, the gossip mill on Cabbot Cove love phrasing the news as "a man was shot to death in Eve Simpson's bedroom".
  • Mistaken for Cheating: The motive of the murder. The killer thought his wife was cheating with Wayne and went to Eve Simpson's house to shoot him in a rage. Wayne wasn't there, but Keppard was.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Wayne Bennett, played by a young Jason Beghe.
  • Murder by Mistake: The pharmacist, Clarence La Rue had intended to kill Wayne Bennett thinking that he'd be at Eve Simpson's house (unaware that Wayne's appointment there had been canceled). When he saw the shadow of a man at Eve's window, he fired a shot, not realizing that it was Fred Keppard.
  • Put on a Bus: Dr. Seth Hazlitt doesn't appear in this episode since his actor, William Windom, was shooting another show. Ideal Molloy and Loretta were also referenced in the episode but do not appear.
  • Running Gag: Renee keeps making it a point to mention "my husband, the lawyer."
  • Secret Relationship: Betty initially seemed to just be one of the women smitten with Wayne. Turns out, they're actually married.
  • Slobs Versus Snobs: When Eve tries to explain why Fred Keppard's car was a rental, Eve refers to him as an entrepreneur. Metzger was dismissive towards the term and maliciously mispronounces it.
