Recap / Murder She Wrote S 12 E 20 Southern Double Cross

Go To

Jessica goes to Australia, as the heiress to vast local acreage threatened by a mining company. The lawyer hired to represent her soon turns up dead, and his murder will not be the last.

Tropes:

  • Asshole Victim: Averted. Cathcart was on the side of good, and while Donald has his flaws (his gambling and coming on too strong towards Linda), he is fairly charming at times and seemed to realize he was wrong, and was trying to make amends when he dies.
  • Childhood Marriage Promise: Averted. Despite the fact that Linda and Donald had talked about getting married when they were twelve, Linda ended up moving on from him when she started seeing Roo.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: The two local mining officials who are really determined to get that land by hook or by crook.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Donald Jarvis's courtship of Linda, who has a boyfriend has elements of this, although he seems to realize how poorly he has been behaving at the end.
  • Famous-Named Foreigner: The spokeswoman for the sheep ranchers has the first name Melba.
  • I Have No Son!: After Donald is forced to take money from his father to pay off the bookie pressuring him, Mr. Jarvis cuts him off while declaring he wasn't his son. It ends up culminating in Mr. Jarvis killing his son, even when he was trying to make things right.
  • Just Like Robin Hood: Jessica's ancestor Eamon McGill (a hanged outlaw) has a good reputation among the locals for opposing the rich.
  • Kangaroos Represent Australia: The opening scene shows kangaroos around the sheep station, Linda is looking after an injured one, and Melba's son is called Roo.
  • Offing the Offspring: In perhaps the only example in the series, Mr. Jarvis accidentally kills his son.
  • Pursued Protagonist: The episode opens with Cathcart the lawyer fleeing for his life from a figure in a jeep. He briefly escapes but the killer resumes the chase and his dead body is later found.
  • Trapped by Gambling Debts: Donald is a poor gambler, which is the reason he and his father favor the sale. It's eventually revealed that the bookie is working with the mining consortium to put pressure on the Jarvises.
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: Donald to Linda; he points out that they did think about getting married as kids.
